The Celebration of the Sacraments

Baptism

Baptisms are normally celebrated at 2:00PM on scheduled Sundays in a month. Please call the Parish office to arrange for a meeting with a Parish Priest and to register for the baptismal class which is normally held on the 4th Monday of each month at 7:30PM.

Marriage

Couples should make an appointment with a Priest at least eight months prior to the wedding. A Marriage Preparation Program is required.

Anointing of the Sick

Anyone seriously ill, elderly, or prior to an operation should be anointed with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Please speak with one of the Priests to make the arrangements.

Communion for the Homebound

Anyone who cannot attend Mass due to illness or age may receive Communion at home. Please call the Rectory office to make arrangements.

Reconciliation (Confession)

Every Saturday and Eve of Holy Days from 4:00PM to 4:45PM in the Church and on the Thursday before the First Friday of every month after the 9:00AM Mass. Individual confessions may be arranged by calling the Rectory office. Interested in becoming a Catholic or completing

your Sacraments?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which adults are brought into the Catholic Church. If you have never been baptized, confirmed or received first Holy Communion or if you are a member of another Christian Church and wish to become a member of the Catholic Church, contact Judy Corbellini at (631)261-1179.

“Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.” This beautiful image gives us a glimpse into heaven. The saints who reside there radiate a brightness, a warmth that resembles the sun itself. Gathered around the throne of God, they share in the luminous presence of the King of Kings, the true Son of the Father.

Perhaps there really is something spiritual about the nearly universal craving to enjoy a tropical vacation, the trend to escape to warmer climates for the winter, or the move towards permanent residence in sunny climates. The continual presence of sunshine, the enjoyable experience of one warm day after another may be in fact like a little taste of heaven. In the Gospel, Jesus himself describes eternal bliss using the imagery of sunshine.

But heat has its downside too. When it’s too in-tense, it can actually be deadly. Think forest fire. Think desert. Think “the fiery furnace, where there will be wail-ing and grinding of teeth.” These are not images of the four-star vacations that we want to last for eternity. No. Here Jesus is referring to the hellish habitat of “all who cause others to sin and all evildoers.” That’s not a trip we want to take. As uncomfortable as it may be, we need to examine ourselves to be sure we’re not on board a train that’s going in the wrong direction. We need to identify and acknowledge any patterns of sin that may have crept into our lives, and seek God’s forgiveness. That will get us back on the right track, enabling us to be counted among “the children of the kingdom.”

Let’s aim for a journey to that kingdom, the one true trip to paradise that lasts for all eternity.

Dear Parishioners, Thank you for nominating so many of your fellow parishioners to our Pastoral Transition Team. I am looking forward to working with the team, and you, our parishioners, in charting a course for the future of our parish. I will now begin to ask those nominated if they wish to serve. Then, once the team is in place, we will get started. Please keep us in your prayers. Now a word about copy machine Novenas. The original Novena, or nine days of prayer, was instituted by Jesus in the Acts of the Apostles, “He had shown himself alive to them after His passion by many demonstrations; for forty days He had continued to appear to them and tell them about the kingdom of God. While He was at table with them, He enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. ‘it is’ He had said, ‘what you have heard me speak about: John baptized with water but in a few days you will be baptized with Holy Spirit.” (Acts 1: 3-5). After nine days of prayer, the Holy Spirit came down upon them on Pentecost. Novenas of nine days, nine weeks, or nine months have been popular devotions for hundreds of years. Some have become “perpetual” or ongoing. Thus the Novena of the Miraculous Medal is prayed all year long on Mondays. The Central Association of the Miraculous Medal webcasts the Novena, and Mass following, every Monday at 9 A.M. and 12:05 P.M. Although there are many themes and intentions to Novenas they all take the same form. The Novena prayers are said every day for nine days, weeks, or months, or perpetually. In addition, the person praying the Novena must make a good confession and receive Holy Communion to complete the prayer. There is no requirement to make copies and leave them in the church or to distribute them in any way. That used to be called a “chain letter.” In order to work, a “chain letter” has to be sent to varying numbers of people. A “chain letter” is regarded by the church as a form of superstition. So where the Novena says, “Make x number of copies and leave them in the Church,” it should say, “Make a good confession and receive Holy Communion.“

Consider being a member of our choir. If you would like to know what it’s like, just come up to sing with the choir during the summer months on Sunday at the 10:30am Mass.

Each summer we try to provide a review of our liturgy. This summer we will concentrate on the Mass.

Penitential Rite After the priest and people have announced God’s presence by exchanging the greeting, the introductory rites continue with the penitential rite. In this rite, we prepare to celebrate Word and Eucharist by acknowledging our sinfulness and asking God for forgiveness. There are three forms of the penitential rite: the recitation of the Confiteor (I confess . . .) by the entire assembly, a brief dialogue between the priest and the people, and a longer dialogue that incorporates the Kyrie Eleison (Lord, have mercy). There is no set method for choosing which form will be used on any given Sun-day, and the third form provides several different sets of invocations which fit different seasons and celebrations. The penitential rite ends with an absolution wherein the priest asks God to for-give the sins of the gathered community and bring us to everlasting life.

“Feed My Lambs” is the weekly request of the SVDP Society to parishioners to bring to church the one or two items that

the Food Pantry is in low supply of. This week’s food item(s) are:

Of course any other items you wish to donate will be gratefully accepted, but the item that we are concentrat-ing on will help us ensure that this item will be in supply
