READINGS FOR THE WEEK

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: THE LIGHT THAT HELPS US SEE

All the ends of the earth see the saving power of God because God’s Light from Light — Jesus Christ — shines for all to see, and for all to be able to see.

FIRST READING All the ends of the earth will behold the salvation of our God (Isaiah 52:7-10). This reading tells of how the LORD comforts His people and that it is the LORD Himself who will comfort His people. Throughout these chapters the LORD insists that He Himself will intervene. We hear the phrases like “I will rescue,” “I will redeem,” “I will create,” etc. This is fulfilled in the birth of the Babe of Bethlehem, for the Child is God among us. The prophet struggles to find words appropriate for this announcement. It is glad tidings, an announcement of peace, and of good news.

SECOND READING God has spoken to us through the Son, the very imprint of God's being (Hebrews 1:1-6). The author speaks of how God revealed His Word through the prophets of old. This was a wonderful gift, but the prophets spoke in human words. Human words always fall short. There had to be many prophets, because none was ever fully successful in revealing God’s Word to His people. This is why God chose to send His own Son, Jesus, the only-begotten Son of God, as the Word of God, the perfect expression of who God is and what He asks of us. The last part of this reading tries to establish Jesus as superior to the angels. Angels are totally spiritual beings. Jesus took on our flesh, so some wondered whether angels might be superior to Him. Our author argues that

Jesus is the Son of God and above every angel.

GOSPEL The Word became flesh; from His fullness we have all received grace (John 1:1-18 [1-5, 9-14]). Before Jesus was born in the flesh in Bethlehem, He already existed. Although the Old Testament authors did not know it, they were actually writing about Jesus whenever they wrote about Wisdom. When this hymn speaks about the Word being in the world and the world not knowing it, it is not speaking about the rejection of Jesus and Israel’s rejection of all the prophets whom Yahweh sent to call her to conversion. God did not consider our material world to be evil, but rather decided to join us and thus bless and consecrate this created world, and so the Word became flesh. Jesus is full of grace and truth: God loves us with a covenant love and God is always faithful. Jesus is God’s Love and faithfulness incarnate. Jesus reveals who God is.

REFLECTION Christmas celebrates the Light of God’s Word-Made-Flesh. Light comes in many forms. Some light is direct. Others are a mere reflection of another source. The glow of a candle, lights on a highway, motion detectors, and lamps in our homes lessen darkness, offer comfort, provide guidance, calm fears, and help us see. Lights in church tell us God is here. Jesus, the Word, is the Light that no darkness can overcome; but at times it seems as though darkness is overcoming the light. While these words on this page were being written, a series of terrorist attacks changed the lives of many and more senseless shootings took place in our cities. News reports often pay more attention to darkness than the lights of people who hold a dying stranger, welcome others into their homes, and protest the violence. These sisters and brothers testify to the power of Light, like John the Baptist. They help us see glimpses of God-with-us. Their actions announce glad tidings and bears the good news that the Light of Christ is stronger. Small deeds speak loudly. Our words and deeds give birth to Jesus each day. They testify that the seemingly impossible can happen, that is, God’s light grows stronger when our actions and presence reflect that God is here. Celebrate Christmas as people of hope who give praise and thanks for Jesus Christ. Restore peace by offering comfort and hope in actions that make God’s glory known. Let the light of our lives match the lights that decorate our trees and homes to lessen the darkness, offer comfort, give guidance, calm fears, and help all see that God is here.

MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK POLICY ON MASS INTENTIONS

Church Law, Canon 948 states that “separate Masses are to be applied for the intentions for which an individual offering has been made and accepted. The priest who accepts such offerings is bound in justice to satisfy the obligations personally or by committing them to another (Cc. 989, 954-55).” In 1991, the Congregations of the Clergy issued a decree in which permission was given to accept several offerings for a collective intention at a single Mass. The following regulations must be observed :

1) The donors must be informed of and consent to the combining of their offerings before the Mass at which the collective intention is. 2) The time and place for the Mass must be announced. 3) The practice may not be observed more than

twice a week. 4) The offerings are to be placed in the general funds of the parish.

These collective intentions will be held at St. Anthony Parish on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the year, provided the day does not fall on a Church Feast or Holiday, such as Christmas.

No more than five intentions can be celebrated at each of these two Masses. These intentions will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. All other Masses will be offered for a single intention only, in accord with Church Law.

If you would like to have your Mass intention offered sooner than the parish can accommodate, Mass intentions can be sent to the Joliet Chancery Office where they will be sent to retired priests, who will offer them at their convenience. Only one Mass intention a day can be accepted by any priest.

If you need any clarification of this policy, please see the Pastor at your convenience.

EUCHARIST DISTRIBUTION

You may have noticed changes in the way the Eucharist is being distributed.

In order to preserve the reverence in the Eucharist, it was decided to move the station from the back to the front of the church. We invite all who are physically able to join us in the front for Communion. Those who are not able, the Eucharist will be provided. Please notify an usher when you come to Mass. Once the side aisles are finished, ministers will come to the back of church. When you see the ministers approach please raise your hand. Thank you for your patience in this transition. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

ST. ANTHONY CONFERENCE

Today we celebrate the Feast of Christmas and hear how the shepherds found Mary and Joseph and the Infant lying in the manger. Then they left glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen.

Your gifts to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul helped those who are poor and suffering to find Emmanuel and they also came to know that “God is with us.” Thank you!

Exploring Priesthood Weekend This is a retreat designed to help men discern God’s call to the diocesan priesthood. To be called by God to serve him as a priest means to have one’s soul stirred deep within. Throughout a weekend of prayer, discussion, presentations of diocesan priesthood and group interaction, men begin to better understand God’s movement in their life. Exploring Priesthood Weekends are held at Mundelein Seminary, 1000 E. Maple Ave., Mundelein, IL. Mundelein Seminary is located about 40 miles north of downtown Chicago and easily accessible by car or train. Transportation is available to and from O’Hare Airport by request.

What Happens On These Weekends? There are presentations on: Practical steps for discerning a vocation; values of priesthood; seminary life, academics, spiritual formation and pastoral ministry; seminarians share their vocation stories. There are several worship opportunities including the celebration Mass. Men are encouraged to ask questions, interact with seminarians and priests, pray in chapels, walk the grounds, or use the recreational facilities (pool, gymnasium, weight room). By fully engaging in the opportunities provided on the retreat, men are more able to understand where God is leading them.

Weekly Gospel/Homily Reflections…

W e have many ways that we communicate

with one another and many tools that help us to express ourselves. It's interesting that each form of communication has its particular usefulness. Sometimes we find that we prefer to write someone a letter rather than talk to them. In a letter, our words can be saved and read over and over again. Sometimes this is important to us. Other times, when we wish to communicate with a large number of people quickly, the convenience and speed of e-mail is preferred. However, when we need an answer to a question immediately, we would probably pick up the telephone. Just as we have many ways in which we communicate with one another, God has communicated with His People in a variety of ways. All of Scripture is God's communication to us, which is why we call this the Word of God. In Scripture, we also learn that God has spoken with His people in a variety of ways. God spoke to Moses from a burning bush; He communicated to Mary through an angel. Today's Gospel also talks about the Word of God. At Christmas, we celebrate the self-communication of God in the person of Jesus. Jesus is God's Word made flesh for our salvation. We call this the Incarnation.

Question for Children: How do you experience Jesus when you give a gift to someone else?

Question For Adults: Why is knowing Jesus important in your life?

To re-read the Gospel to assist with your weekly reflection, go to: www.usccb.org/bible/readings. Click to the right of the calendar for the week’s readings and scroll to “Gospel”.

Mission Statement We, the members of St. Anthony Catholic Church, gather together to worship and celebrate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as we strive to live the Gospel in our daily lives. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are called to invite, inform, inspire and ignite the community in our faith journey by fostering stewardship through sharing of our gifts of time, talent and treasure. We are further called to share our faith through active evangelization and charitable outreach.
