Recreation Review with Carla
Big Thanks to Deb Lesyk and her granddaughters, Riley,
Logan, Lilly, Sophie and Olivia for putting on a entertaining
Horse Show last month. Grandpa Dwight helped bring the
miniature horses into the city and unload them into our back
garden. We enjoyed the obstacle race, egg and spoon race
and game of musical hoops. The girls did a great job of
leading their horses around and getting them to participate
in the fun activities. After the competitions were done, the
girls led the horses around to the Residents for a little visit.
It’s not everyday you get to pet a miniature horse at the
nursing home!

Special thanks to Home Depot for donating several wood projects for our Residents to create. They had a great time with this activity!
We have so many Residents who enjoy crafting and creating that we are constantly challenged to find new and interesting ideas. If you ever have a great idea, please share it with Carla or the Recreation staff!

The Spiritual Side with Edgar Mission Week: Celebrating Teamwork
July 22 – 28 was Mission Week, a week where we took the time to
celebrate the amazing staff at St. Ann’s. Anchored by the Feast of
St. Anne on July 26 and Mass celebrated by bishop Mark Hage-
moen, the Mission Team planned a week of events that included a
staff potluck, Long Service Awards, and the Mission Awards. This
year’s theme was “Celebrating Teamwork”, an acknowledgement
that none of us can get things done on our own, we all need one
another. The following African Proverb expresses this nicely: “If
you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go togeth-
er.” While speed is important, our aim is to go the distance – to
finish the race, to continue giving great care.
Staff Potluck!!

The Spiritual Side with Edgar Finally, congratulations to the following staff who were selected by their
peers as living the Mission of St. Ann’s:
Shigeko Hlady (Nursing) – Respect and Dignity
Carla Eager (Administration) – Resident Directed
Care
Leah Woodard (Nursing) – Holistic Care
Pat Martens (Housekeeping) – Compassion
Jackie Ethier (Nursing) – Hope
Mission Award recipients, from left to right: Leah (back), Carla, Shigeko, Jackie, and Pat.
This is the second year Mission Awards were handed out. Essentially, the Mission Awards
are an expression of our gratitude to staff who model our 5 core values: respect and dignity,
resident directed care, holistic care, compassion, and hope. Recipients of the awards are
nominated and voted by St. Ann’s own staff. This year, 30 nomination forms were submitted,
and 41 employees were nominated. The tallies were close, with nursing staff receiving 3
awards, Housekeeping 1, and Administration 1.
Last year’s award recipients were Shannon Thompson, Food Services (Respect and Dignity),
Rod Revet, Nursing (Resident Directed Care), Vicki Weisner, Nursing (Holistic Care), Joy
Marapao, Nursing (Compassion) and Katie Dersch, Nursing (Hope).
Please take a moment to congratulate our staff for their efforts!
A special thank you to the entire Mission Team for their commitment and enthusiasm in
living the Mission of St. Ann’s.

All About Me! Resident of the Month Interview… Victor Duhaime When you were a kid, what age did you think you would live until? Certainly not 70….because that’s what I am now! What was your favourite toy as a child? A teddy bear What was your favourite activity to do as a child? I helped my dad quite a bit and went to school. I didn’t really have any activity that I liked better than another. Did you get spending money as a child and if yes, how much? I was given 25 cents every second Saturday. I was also given some money on my birthday. Who taught you to drive? Did you pass the first time? The Abilities Council taught me how to drive, but nerves got in the way of me passing on my first try. If you travelled or took vacations, where was your favourite spot and why? I went to Kamloops with my Aunt on the bus around 15 years ago, we stayed in the city which was so beautiful.

Nursing News with Deb
On behalf of the Management team we would like to thank each and every staff member for going above and beyond during renovations, no hot water, and lack of air conditioning. We certainly appreciate what you have worked through on your shifts. And to families and Residents thank you as well for being patient and waiting for things to improve. We are hoping to have our Family Room back soon, have access to the garden and projects completed. Thanks again. Here’s hoping the St. Ann’s Residents, staff and families will help the Canadian Texas Longhorn Association with their Photogenic Pairs Contest. There is a picture board on display in the lounge area with information about Texas Longhorn cattle. We need you to vote for your favorite photo of the pairs displayed on the board. Write the number of the picture on the ballot provided and on the 8th of August we will announce the winner. St. Ann’s will mail the owner of the winning picture a certificate from all of us at St. Ann’s. Enjoy the pictures and pick your favorite.
Family Council We are hoping there is renewed interest in reorganizing St. Ann’s Family Council. The council meets on a monthly basis for discussion, educational sessions and to share concerns or offer ideas about life at St. Ann’s. The meetings can be set at whatever time works best for families and they usually last about an
hour. We have held them in the afternoon or early evening depending on the agenda for that particular month. It’s a way for families to get to know each other and to learn about topics of interest. In the past the council has identified care needs that have helped improve life at St. Ann’s and have asked for topics to be discussed so that families can learn about new medications, care practices or particular diseases. The council is a benefit to both families and to the staff who work with the Residents every day. If you are interested please contact either Deb at Ext 224 or Carla at Ext 233 and let us know. We would like to see the council get started again in September but need your involvement as it is for families.
