22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C

I would like to share with you my recent experience at World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland. First off, it was amazing to experience the catholic (universal) Church in such a powerful way. While walk-ing around the city, all the different groups were wav-ing their flags, singing songs, and high fiving every-one. The joyful spirit was infectious. Everyone was so peaceful! There were no brawls or scuffles in the city, nor on the field where we spent the night and no shouting matches either. Two million people from all over the world infiltrated Krakow to celebrate life and their faith in Jesus Christ as is expressed in the Catho-lic Church. Seeing this alone was worth the price of admission. I was also left with hope at seeing the youth of the world. We can naturally tend to be pessimistic when it comes to the future, especially if we judge by what we see on the news. All the violence and acts of terrorism that have become too common, acts of evil which we thought only existed in the movies. So we might forget some truths of the faith, such as: Jesus Christ is the Savior of the World and King of the Universe, God’s will is active in our lives and in the world, and this God is both all-knowing and all-powerful. During times like this we should remind ourselves of the words of St. Paul, “Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.” (Rom. 5:20) Where sin and evil exist, grace and mercy exist even more. Seeing over two million young adults from all over the world coming together because of religion gives me hope for the future, and it should give hope to you too. Lastly, I’ve been struck by Pope Francis’ words at the Vigil on Saturday night. He encouraged the youth not to be afraid to go out in the world. There are tempta-tions in our culture and our society that are appealing. There are comforts that we have to overcome. He even coined the phrase “sofa-happiness.” That all we want to do is lounge all day in a comfortable and safe place. To use Pope Benedict’s words, “We were not created for an easy life, but for great things, for goodness.” So we should strap on our boots and go out into the world and communicate the message of the Gospel by our lives, our example and our words. The experiences that we had during WYD, and what we experienced during Mass and prayer, could be read in a religious book. It is not meant for just ourselves, but to be shared with all, so that they too might come to know Jesus Christ and His Bride the Church. Jesus Christ came into the world so that we might know Him. He came into the world to set in on fire. What can we do to spread this blaze? Reflection by Fr. Braud

Fisherman's Prayer I pray that I may live to fish

Until my dying day. And when it comes to my last cast,

I then most humbly pray: When in the Lord’s great landing net

And peacefully asleep That in His mercy I be judged

Big enough to keep.
