MESSAGE FROM MISSION DIRECTOR
Dear Saint Jude Family,
We are close to the Holy week. This is a time to reconcile with God and go
back to Him asking pardon for our sins. It is also a time to mediate the value
of Suffering under the light of the passion of our Lord.
First of all Suffering is so helpful for a sinner to return to God and to understand His love. St.
Chrysostom says “Sin is an ulcer of the soul; if suffering does not come to remove the corrupted
matter the soul will be lost”. The letter to Hebrews reminds us that the Father disciplines every son
He loves (Hebrews 12,6).
Secondly, Suffering is a great source of merit for our souls. Saint Paul reminds us that compared to
the greater glory we are to receive in heaven, the suffering of this time are trifles (Romans 8, 18).
Saint James in his letter says: “Blessed is the one who endures temptation; for when he has been
proved, he shall receive the crown of life which God has promised to them” (James 1, 12). The
book of Job teaches “if we have received good things at the hand of the Lord, why not suffer-
ing” (Job 2,10).
Thirdly, Suffering is the touchstone of Love. Jesus said “There is no greater love than laying down
one’s life for the other”. Saint Paul reminds us that “love bears everything” (1 Cor 13, 7). Gold and
silver are tried in fire, but acceptable men in the furnace of humiliation and suffering.
Fourthly, Suffering is prayer. The best prayer one can have to give one self completely to the Will
of God amidst of all the suffering. As Jesus prayed “not my will but Your Will be done”. One mar-
tyr prayed once when he was imprisoned “O Lord, what evil have I done that I should suffer this
persecution”. Our Lord gave him an answer “And what evil have I done that I should be nailed to
the Cross?” If we believe that the suffering and Passion of our Lord saved us from hell, why
should we not believe that through our suffering we can participate in the salvific Suffering of our
Lord.
May Good God Bless you! Have a blessed Holy Week.
Sincerely yours in Christ our Savior,
Tijoachan
