My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

Freedom is not free! This saying is engraved into one wall at the Korean War Veterans Memorial, Washington, D.C. Although this expression’s first meaning coined by retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Walter Hitchcock is used in gratitude for the service of members of the military, it can also apply in other contexts outside military circles, especially when we speak of religious freedom. Freedom is not free is often used to convey respect specifically to those who have given their lives in defense of freedom, and it implies that the freedoms enjoyed by many citizens in many democracies, including our own, are only possible through the risks taken and sacrifices made by those in the military, drafted or not. Our country, the first thirteen colonies forming the United States, was founded on religious freedom — that we may live our faith freely in the public square. The first amendment in the Bill of Rights as adopted in 1791 reads as follows: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Throughout the centuries, well before 1776, our Catholic faith and the freedom to gather and pray and work for the Catholic and Christian values that come from our founder and Lord Jesus have been possible only through the risks taken and sacrifices made by many saints and confessors and martyrs for our faith. This past week, I am grateful for the freedom to gather, worship, pray and grow in our Catholic faith, especially for our youth. Below is a picture of the group of children between grades 1 to 6 that attended the day sessions of TOTUS TUUS, a week-long “parish mission” for Catholic youth whereby seminarians and college students proclaim the Gospel and promote the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, apologetics, Christian witness, the sacraments, Marian devotion, Eucharistic worship, and FUN! Totus Tuus seeks to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion, and openness to their vocation by constantly challenging them to give themselves entirely to Christ through Mary and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of Her. The focus for the children this week was on PRAYER and the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, the heart of our faith, that Jesus rose from the dead, ascended, gave us the Holy Spirit, and as firstfruits called Mary into heaven through the Assumption and honored her life of love and service freely given by Crowning her as Queen of Heaven and Earth. Prayer, that deep connection with God and with all creation, especially with one another, is CRUCIAL if we want to protect and preserve our religious freedom. Everyday, we are called to freely enter into that loving conversation that exists in all time and in eternity in God. Prayer takes various forms, and can be described by five types: Blessing and Adoration, Petition, Intercession, Thanksgiving, and Praise. Everyday, we are called to humbly adore the God from Whom all blessings flow, to ask for help, for forgiveness, for grace, both for ourselves and for others, to thank God for His many gifts and blessings, and to praise God, recognizing most immediately that God is God, giving Him glory for His holiness and bountiful works. Religious freedom is not free, so let us pray to protect and preserve this basic right and freedom for our generation and for generations yet to come!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

…neighbor helping neighbor... Our helpline 815-886-4165 ext. 304

All calls are confidential with callbacks within 24 hours.

In the Gospel, Jesus teaches us that God is our “Father” and just as a parent’s love for their children is unlimited, so is God’s love and care for us unlimited. Jesus further teaches that prayer unfolds in the context of this special

relationship of “Our Father.” This relationship inspires in us confidence with the realization that what we pray for is not as important as the fact that we address God in such intimate terms.

Prayer always deepens our relationship with God.

Please do not hesitate to call our helpline if you or someone you know needs temporary assistance.

Ask. Seek. Knock. Do you know someone who is just so relentless? He tirelessly makes his point! She keeps at it and does not back down. They ask … and ask again … and yet again! Abraham, the merciful one, is just like that – reread of his persistence in Genesis 18:20-32. The friend is just like that, too, in Luke 11:1-13. And Jesus tells all who hear, and that is us today as well, be just like that in addressing God. Ask. Seek. Knock. Few words, fewer actions, great persistence. • How will my prayer be persistent this week? • For whom and for what will I pray? • How can I respond like God and open my door (and my heart), give food to the hungry, bargain for the innocent?

Legion of Mary News

This past Saturday, July 16th, once more our Legion of Mary went out into the community to invite others to join us here at St. Andrew the Apostle. It’s an experience that touches the heart.

For those of you who may be wondering what the Legion of Mary is about…we are a group that meets weekly under the guidance of our Blessed Mother, to reach out to others to help bring them closer to Jesus. We pray the rosary together as well as other Marian prayers and discuss the works that we are currently doing and what we would like to do. If this sounds like something you would be interested in being a part of, come and join us on Mondays in the conference room of the school at 7:00pm. We would love to have you! Ad Jesum Per Mariam

The rosary is a devotion that, through the Blessed Mother, leads us to Jesus. -Blessed Pope Paul VI

The picture to the right was taken after our “Door to Door”. From left to right we have Susan, Chris, Juana, Regina, and our beautiful Blessed Mother in front.

St. Francis of Assisi Parish (1501 W Boughton Rd, Bolingbrook, IL) Healing Mass of Anointing of the Sick

Saturday, August 13, 2016 — 11:00 a.m.

This anointing mass falls near the Feast Day of St. Clare of Assisi, who spent her life giving service to the poor and the sick.

The Mass of Anointing is offered for the sick of any age, and for seniors. The anointing at Mass is a “conferral of special grace on the Christian experiencing the difficulties inherent in the condition of…illness…or age” (catechism). A secondary conditional effect is healing of the body “when it is expedient for the soul’s salvation” (Council of Trent). This Mass is an opportunity for the sick (regardless of age), for seniors, for caregivers and families to experience sacramental grace and comfort through anointing in the parish community setting. The ancient tradition is meant to be a community celebration for the parish uniting with its anointed members.

A period of fellowship with a light luncheon will follow.

To obtain a count for the luncheon, please RSVP to the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Office at 630-759-7588 or e-mail: [email protected] by August 1st.

Keep Praying

St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is often known as “the persistent mother.” She watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his Christian faith.

Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to God about Augustine then to Augustine about God.

The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church’s greatest scholars.

Today’s readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to “ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying. Look upon our brothers and sisters who are ill, in the midst of illness and pain, may they be united with Christ, who heals both body and soul; may they know the consolation promised to those who suffer and be fully restored to wellness and wholeness. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED:

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION CATECHUMENATE

The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE

Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING RECONCILIATION

Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

ANOINTING Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain.

BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS

Submissions are usually due Fridays at noon, nine days prior to publication. Send to [email protected]. Some early deadlines apply during the holidays.
