Dear Candidate,

The St. Andrew’s – Amherstburg Search Committee welcomes your interest in our

full time Minister of Word and Sacrament. St. Andrew’s has a long history, 189 years, of

service to the congregation and the historic community in which it resides.

We are looking, at this pivotal time, for a spiritual leader that can forward the

ministries of St. Andrew’s and continue the development of the congregation’s growth in

Christ’s way.

Amherstburg is a small, historic community that is finding a revitalized identity and

St. Andrew’s – Amherstburg is looking to renew its Mission in the immediate and global

community. We invite you to open yourself to the Holy Spirit’s inspiration as you read the

profile and see if God has placed a call on your heart to serve with our congregation.

All inquiries and applications should be directed towards Reverend Doug Cameron,

Community

Located in the beautiful historic town of Amherstburg Ontario, St. Andrew's is a charming

church whose congregation dates back over 189 years to its founding in 1828. The current

sanctuary itself dates from 1846.

Amherstburg is on the Detroit River 27 kilometers south of Windsor, with an attractive view of

Lake Erie and ocean going vessels plying the St. Lawrence Seaway. The town has several

churches, many restaurants, and abundant recreational areas, including the magnificent King’s

Navy Yard Park on the river and the Holiday Beach Conservation area on Lake Erie. Its

military history, as reflected by Fort Malden, a national historic site, predates the War of 1812

and it was a prominent terminal in the Underground Railway, as documented by the Freedom

Museum. It is the site of several annual festivals and celebrations and has received numerous

awards for its horticultural assets. Please visit www.amherstburg.ca for further information on

our community.

While Amherstburg is known as a very safe community, it is not without some challenges,

such as retention of youth in the community. There are significant opportunities for ministry

in our community as it evolves from dominant manufacturing to a bedroom and retirement

community. There is a strong tourism component and a high school in the core.

Education:

Amherstburg is home to five elementary schools, including one which has started a French

Immersion program and one which is a French language school. The town also has a public

high school, which is scheduled to be re-built. The city of Windsor is home to the University

of Windsor and St. Clair Colllege.

Culture and Recreation:

Amherstburg boasts several festivals throughout the year including Rivertown Lights, The

Harvest Festival, Art by the River, Military Heritage Days, Amherstburg “Gone Car Crazy”

and Ice Cream Festival/Canada Day Celebrations. The town is home to the Libro Arena and

Sports Complex. Amherstburg is a short drive to Detroit, Michigan which is host to major

league sports teams, world class concerts as well as many galleries and museums.

Worship Life

Our worship largely takes the form of a traditional Presbyterian service, with significant

musical variety. Services are subtly supported with electronic amplification and projection.

The congregation is known for being exceptionally warm, friendly and welcoming; Sunday

service is traditionally followed by a coffee hour.

Music plays a vital role in our church life. Our choir, under the very capable leadership of our

accomplished and gifted musical director and supported by a very talented percussionist,

presents a variety of traditional, modern and eclectic music. The sanctuary boasts both a

vintage pipe organ and a magnificent grand piano.

We have been attempting to foster necessary growth while retaining the format that our

members have come to cherish. We believe that a mixture of respect for our evolutionary path,

a positive message from the pulpit, the variety of our accomplished musical program and our

outreach into the community would accomplish these goals.

Pastoral Care

Our congregation requires care and counsel

both for our attending congregation and for

our long standing members and adherents who

are unable to attend on a weekly basis. We

consider pastoral care to be a fundamental

activity and are looking for leadership and

dialogue as we re-evaluate its delivery to the

members of our congregation.

Pastoral Care

St. Andrews ministers to the Village Lodge, which is

a Boarding House Ministry, and a worship service is

held monthly at Richmond Terrace Retirement

Home. A very active Prayer Chain continues to

provide support at the request of members of the

congregation and community.

Many of our members are involved in community

and service organizations benefitting Amherstburg

residents and others well beyond the boundaries of

the church.

Embracing and expressing our love for God

~ through prayer, sacraments, hospitality, outreach and service to all

For example, during the 2016 Olympics, the

children participated in their very own Olympic

activities with a corresponding lesson from the

Bible. Our Sunday School students also present

skits and pageants, often involving many adults

from the congregation as well. We are looking

forward to growing our Sunday School and offering

a youth group in the future. In the past, Bible

Studies, Alpha Programs and Women’s Retreats

have been successfully supported and their

restoration would be most desirable.

At St. Andrews, both Sunday School and Nursery are

provided during our weekly church service. While the

number of participants may be modest, our Sunday

School coordinator delivers a vibrant, relevant

curriculum to the children. They learn and grow in their

spirituality while being engaged in creative and fun

activities.

Christian Education and Youth Ministries

Our Minister and Kirk Session have been active in Presbytery and General Assembly and we

intend to continue this.

Involvement in the Denomination

Administration and Stewardship of Financial Resources

As with many churches, the continued care and maintenance of our church and congregation

can present significant financial challenges. Our Treasurer is a member of our congregation

and a professional accountant. It is hoped that the candidate will have a positive influence in

this area.

Goals and Objectives

Following the appointment of a minister, among the first priorities will be to review the goals

and objectives by the Session and Minister.

Presently these include:

Continuing to offer inclusive and engaging worship services accompanied with

opportunities for socialization

To give support, assurance and comfort to our current congregation through services,

functions, and counseling;

Maintain the church structure and property in good repair for the foreseeable future;

Continue to support external agencies, such as the Boarding House Ministry,

Richmond Senior Residence, the Food Bank and Mission

Manage available resources in a manner that secures our future.

Along with the Session and the Board, the St Andrews Action Committee and other

volunteers, co-ordinate the following fundraisers: rummage sales, bake sales, spaghetti,

turkey and chicken dinners, are held throughout the year to support the work of the church.

There are also many pot luck luncheons as well as a Good Friday Breakfast.

Rummage/bake sales are held in the spring and fall. These latter events also provide

essential items at very reasonable cost to the disadvantaged in our community. Various lay

organizations and community groups use the church throughout the week.

The choir participates in the weekly service and other church events including funerals and

the Christmas Cantata/Concert.

Longstanding ministers of the recent past include Rev. Elizabeth Jobb, the pastor for 11 years

from 2002 until her retirement in 2013. Her predecessor, Rev. John Burkhart, served for 37

years from 1964 to 2001. The longevity of their service speaks to the stability & character of

our congregation.

In addition to our General Fund ($27,000), there is a Memorial Fund ($26,000), a Manse

Fund ($130,000), a Building Maintenance Fund ($26,000--with income from an estate trust

fund of approximately $10,000 per year) and a Reserve Fund ($150,000).

The sanctuary dates to 1846 and is on the municipal

register of heritage properties. It is a well maintained,

traditional white frame structure, with beautiful stained

glass windows, oak pews, abundant natural light and

excellent acoustics. It is outfitted with air conditioning.

It is also equipped with a sound and video projection

system and is wired for computer interface and internet

access via Wi-Fi, much of which is used during services.

Chair lifts to the sanctuary and the CEB provide

handicap accessibility.
