THE THEME Today’s Gospel message about possessions isn’t new, but it has

special meaning for us in our consumer society. How do we

tame our own wants and those of our children? How do we reconcile our concerns about financial security in a capitalist society with the warnings

we hear today? Paul challenges us to discern whether we have taken off our old selves and put

on our new selves in Christ.

JULY 30/31, 2016 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3

From Fr. Manuel’s Desk 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: My dear brothers and sisters, today’s readings challenge us to focus on what is important in our lives, materialism or striving to attain eternal life. We are reminded to keep our eyes on what truly matters, living a just life now so that we can live an everlasting life when our time on earth is over. Our first reading brings that point home when we hear, in Ecclesiastes that life is vanity of vanities, transitory like vapor or breath that quickly vanishes. Those who work hard at gain-ing possessions and wealth will soon die and leave the possessions to one who has not worked for them. Death makes such struggle futile and our lesson from this reading should be that only attunement to God’s values will lead us on the path to everlasting glory. St. Paul challenges us in the Second reading to put away all that is “earthly”, namely all that causes our hearts to harden and not be attuned to Christ’s way of living and acting. In baptism, we have put on Christ so we must live as Christ. In Christ we are all bonded to each other, all di-visions are eliminated and nothing can ever separate us from God and one another. St. Luke shows us that Jesus is always attuned to the obstacles that riches pose in our efforts to attune ourselves to God’s voice and way of op-erating. The “rich fool” parable becomes a liv-ing example of one who has not learned that “one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Je-sus teaches that we are all called upon to be-come rich in what matters to God. My dear friends, the lessons are hard this week. We all have to live in a society that teaches us to want and strive for more, more money, the big-gest house, the fastest car and so on. Living life to the full is not in itself wrong, but as the read-ings teach us, we should live rich in the fruits of God, loving him and one another and allowing no one or no goal to get in the way of that cove-nant love. Let us all pray for the strength and

courage to live the life that we are being called to live in Christ Jesus. God Bless You Always, Fr. Manuel

STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship Reflection Good stewards follow the advice of St. Paul and conduct themselves-by wise use of their time and talents-in

a way worthy of the Gospel of Christ. “If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.” Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards who Receive God’s mercy in such a profound way that it moves them to share mercy with others, especially during this Jubilee year.
