Dear Parishioners, I hope , that your past week, the first week of Advent, was very spiritually profitable for you -- especially as we journey together with the words of Pope Francis.

Monday is a Holy Day of Obligation for us in the United States, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. It is also our Patronal Feast since our country has Mary as our patroness under her title as the Immaculate Conception. I hope that you will make it a special point to come to Mass on Monday and to pray for our country on our feast day. Friday is also the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We will have a special bilingual Mass that evening at 7 pm. Thanks to all who have been fulfilling your commitments to "casting our nets into deeper water"! I am grateful for the generous response. Soon you will be receiving a report about the response of our all our parishioners. It's not too late to make your commitment to your parish. Advent blessings to you all! Devotedly yours in Christ, Fr. Gabe

Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Second Sunday of Advent - John the Baptist’s call to repentance is echoed in the U.S. bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship: “Christians must beg God for the grace of conversion: the grace to know who they are, to whom they belong, how they are to live — the grace to repent and change and grow, the grace to become good disciples and stewards.”

WE ENCOURAGE ALL TO READ AND REFLECT ON THE BIBLICAL PASSAGES THAT WILL BE PROCLAIMED

AT ALL MASSES NEXT WEEK. First Reading — As a garden makes its growth spring up, so will God make justice spring up before all the nations (Isa 61:1-2a, 10-11). Psalm — My soul rejoices in my God (Lk 1:46-50, 53-54). Second Reading — Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what is good (1 Thess 5:16-24). Gospel — I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord (Jn 1:6-8, 19-28).

Saturday Confessions 3:30 to 5 p.m. and 7:30 to 8 p.m.

Msgr. Gonzales

To Receive Holy Communion (For those who are sick, hospitalized, or

home bound) Please call Gloria Bowen, Eucharistic Minister to the sick at

Reflections on Today’s Readings

FOCUS: God’s promise of a savior brings us comfort and calm. Each Advent we can choose to let the social pressures this time of the year overwhelm us or to take a step back and include Christ in all our planning for Christmas. Today, as we hear of John the Baptist preaching in the desert, we need to remember our own need for repentance and our mission to make straight the way of the Lord. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Isaiah challenges us to be heralds of the good news and prepare the way of the Lord. In the second reading, Peter reminds us to prepare for the right things and to be at peace, and without spot or blemish. Saint Mark’s Gospel begins today with people going out to hear and be baptized by John the Baptist. He tells them of one mightier than he who is coming.

Masses: Sat: 5:30 p.m. Sun: 7:30 a.m. Sun: 9:00 a.m. Sun: 10:30 a.m. Sun: 12:00 NN. Sun: 7:30 p.m.

Living Faith For Kids “Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the

Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day.” ~ 2 Peter 3:8

Perhaps you have already noticed that God does not always take action when and how we would like Him to. St. Peter, the first pope, reminded early Christians that God’s timing was different from our own. According to God’s wisdom and design, we have this moment to love and serve Him. If we are blessed with one tomorrow or many, we will still only be able to love and serve Him one moment at a time. Let us use our time well, trusting that God knows how to give us what we need and when we need it most.

God, help us use and appreciate our time well! St. Jerome Catholic Daughters, Court St. Michael, will be sponsoring a Coffee and Doughnuts Sunday at St. Jerome Parish Hall, 1550 Thornburn Street, LA, Ca. 90045. This will occur on Sunday, Dec. 14, after each Mass: 7:30, 9:00, and 11:00 am. They will also be selling homemade items, which will make great gifts for the Holidays. They will also be displaying goods other than handmade gifts. Come and see!

Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

Santa Safety - Here are some simple guidelines for parents, guardians, and grand-parents to employ to make sure that children have a safe and happy visit with Santa’s

helper: When your child is with Santa’s helper, con-sider encouraging him or her to stand next to Santa or sit on the floor between his feet rather than sitting on his lap. Let your child know that it’s okay to tell Santa what he or she wants for Christmas but that he or she should also tell mom and dad because they are also Santa’s helpers… Secret surprises are special but no adult should ask a child to keep secrets from the child’s parents. Make sure that the Santa visit is out in the open—or make sure that parents, guardians, and grand-parents are included in the interaction. Fact of Life From a Frightened Young Girl to the Mother of a Priest

National Catholic Register Deacon Ryan shouldn’t be here right now. But something inside a frightened girl just wouldn’t let her go through with an abortion 26 years ago. She resolved to have the baby and give him up for adoption. She wanted to give him every chance she feared she could not give. Adopted at birth, Ryan Allan Kaup grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, was raised Catholic and attended Catholic schools. “To be able to make God present for people in the Eucharist and to bring them his forgiveness in the sacrament of reconciliation is what I am most looking forward to,” he said of the priesthood. Next spring, Deacon Kaup will be ordained a priest. Thank God for his mother’s choice of life.

“Gather Around the Roaring Fire” “I baptize you with water for repentance. He will

baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Matthew 3:11

My wife and I enjoyed a wood fireplace in our home for many years. I can still hear the sounds it made when it reached full blaze. Like Rice Krispies, it would snap, crackle, and pop, recalling the classic holiday lyric, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire.” Those dynamic sounds were signs of fire’s power to steel us from the harsh winter cold and illuminate our family room with a soft, ethereal glow. Yet, when-ever we moved too close, we were aware of fire’s capacity to burn us. We also learned that we had to stoke the fire and add wood to keep it burning. Jesus said, “I came to bring fire to the earth and how I wish it were already blazing.” The light of Christ gathers us, but it must be approached reverently with due respect for its power to sear away dead wood from our lives. We must also stoke the fire with our witness and fuel it with our good works. Prayer: Light of Christ, gather us around your flame. Fill us with a vibrant faith that pops with fire and crackles with life.
