St. Anastasia Catholic Church

Dear Parishioners, I hope that you have been enjoying the 4th of July weekend. As we celebrate our Nation’s Independence this weekend, we pray

that the Lord will bless our country with wisdom and with gratitude. In the Gospel reading for today, we hear that even Jesus experiences rejection. Because the Gospel of Mark is a hard book on discipleship, we should not be surprised, therefore, that we ourselves will experience rejection for our beliefs and values. But more to the point, we must have faith! Despite the possibility of rejection, Jesus invites His followers to stay close to His ways, to grow in our understanding of faith, to never stop praying, and to persevere. Never give up! Devotedly yours, Fr. Gabe

Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time - During this time, we celebrate the independence of our country. We would do well to echo the psalmist, saying, “Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for His mercy.” May we always recognize and use wisely the gifts of freedom and abundance He has showered upon us. - Ps 123

Reflections on Today’s Readings: FOCUS: Jesus is compassionate and merciful to all who call upon Him. Who among us would not welcome a miracle? While we can look back in time and see the miracles of the past, it may not be easy to see those in our own day. It takes faith to be able to recognize miracles. It requires taking time out of our busy schedules to pray and contemplate God’s actions in our world. There are miracles occurring today, we have only to believe in order to see.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Our first reading tells us that God created life, not death, and that all of creation is wholesome. Saint Paul encourages the Corinthians to share their abundance, just as Jesus shared His life for their salvation. Saint Marks’s passage relates two stories: Jesus healing the woman with hemorrhages and raising the daughter of the synagogue official from the dead.

FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST Mark’s Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Jesus are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of any fault with his teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark’s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus’ two‑fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus’ return to his native place, and further points out that he is in the midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the day of the Gospel’s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who are Jesus’ followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he? Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

Help children be aware of unhealthy behavior among others: Children have more opportunities to be out of your immediate sight during the

summer. It’s important to remind your child that if another child or adult – including people they know and trust – try to touch them inappropriately they should: Say NO and GET AWAY from any person or situation that makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused. Tell them to TRUST THEIR FEELINGS and be sure to TELL a trusted adult. And it’s never too late to tell a trusted adult what happened. FACT OF LIFE Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, All things are passing away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices. -- St. Teresa of Avila It may seem as though living the Catholic Faith is harder than ever before. But we must never lose hope. Even the power of the Supreme Court is nothing compared to the power we possess as followers of Jesus. Keep the faith. Fight injustice with prayer and example. Use the mind and body God gave us to work within our society without being corrupted by it. Look to our Saints for example and courage. Never give up hope, as it comes from God.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time,

Sunday, July 5th. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Corinthians 12:10 When we are young, we always want to be older, stronger and more independent. We love our parents, but we also want to get along without them. Some-times we feel the same about God. Sometimes we think we have “outgrown” God. But the moment we think we don’t need God is the moment we start growing in the wrong direction. No matter how old we are, God will be there to help us when we feel the weakest. In the moments when we need God most, he will be our strength when we can’t find our own.

Jesus, be strong for me when I need you most.
