LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER … For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers … Please let us know about the condition of those for whom we pray. We’ll keep/remove their name(s) as requested, after the first few weeks.

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF BECOMING A PRIEST? Visit: www.lavocations.org

Dear Parishioners, The message in today's Gospel about greed is particularly poignant for our

society, our world, our homes, our community. From the time we are small children we find it very hard to share. The more conscious we are that God has richly blessed us, the more inclined we are to share His gifts. Thanks to all who assisted with the signature campaign opposing SB-131. I will be away for a few weeks of vacation. While I am away we will have a missionary present for the Archdiocesan Mission Cooperative Plan on the weekend of August 7-18. Thanks to Father Tom, Msgr. Vadakin, and Msgr. Cox for their help while I am away. I will be back August 24. God bless you all. You are always in my prayers. Devotedly yours, Fr. Gabe

Reflection on Today’s Readings: FOCUS: Grow rich in the sight of God. All who follow the way of Christ wrestle with setting priorities. Filling a bigger barn, adding to a stock portfolio, increasing a market share, working a second job; these cannot dominate one’s life. Each one of us must set aside working for earthly goods to do the spiritual and corporal works for mercy that make us rich in the sight of God.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: The author of Ecclesiastes reminds us that we cannot take worldly wealth with us when we die. It will go to another. Paul tells us that we are to seek the higher things and form ourselves into the image of God. Jesus bluntly teaches that greed and wealth do not guarantee us long life. Death can come at any time.

AN AMAZING JOURNEY OF FAITH- FOR YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW

Are you thinking about becoming a Catholic? Do you know someone who might be thinking about becoming a Catholic? Here is the chance to invite that special someone to an informal gathering to share and question whether or not the time is right for them to pursue becoming a Catholic. The process is called RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This is the process through which adults are fully initiated into the Catholic faith community. We become a member of the Catholic faith by truly experiencing the life, the self-understanding, and the activities of the community itself. Please consider experiencing this process or inviting someone to join us for this amazing jour-ney of faith. We begin with an informal gathering on Thursday evening Sept. 5th at 7:30 PM. Call Jonette @310-670-2243 or [email protected]

Ministry in Community …

Summertine, Safe Time - All teachers, staff and volunteers in the Archdiocese who work with children must undergo

fingerprinting and criminal background checks. Archdiocesan guidelines and abuse prevention training programs currently in use in the Archdiocese emphasize the importance of parents knowing who has access to their children at school and other church-sponsored activities. Summertime is here, and parents should remain vigilant regarding who is granted access to their children. Make sure camp counselors have undergone criminal background checks. And, make sure you know the camp’s “daily routine.” In particular, make sure that no camp activity results in a child being left alone with one adult. All activities should be supervised by more than one adult, and the camp should be open to unannounced drop-in visits from parents. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

The Mission Co-Op Collection takes place the weekend of August 17/18, 2013 Rev. Frederick K. Byaruhanga, from the Kabale Diocese, Uganda will be here to share with us his missionary work and the needs of the people. Kabala Diocese is one of the 19 dioceses of Uganda, situated in the rural extreme southwestern corner of the country—about 280 miles from the capital city (Kampala). The diocese boarders Rwanda on the South West and the Democratic Republic of Congo on the Western side, and serve a population of 1,500,000 people, of whom approximately 700,000 are Roman Catholic. This appeal seeks assistance also for the long-term Kabala diocese Orphaned and Vulnerable Children program. Through a foster home care program, outreach support to orphaned children is provided, the vast majority of whom have lost both parents and are left all alone to fend for themselves. School tuition, clothing and health care is provided. This program is currently supporting 350 children out of well over 20,000 greatly in need of help. Need of support towards Rushoroza Health Care Center is required also, which Kabala Diocese is in the process of constructing, This health center will serve a critical need because of its location in the rural area that serves mostly the poor, and an area that continues to grapple diseases such as malaria, typhoid, HIV/Aids, TB, among others. These life-threatening diseases continue to claim a lot of lives, given also that the area has a ratio of one doctor/3,000 people. Once completed, the Health Center will serve a population of about 700,000 people and will also extent its services to the next door neighbors in Rwanda since it’s located at the Uganda/Rwanda boarder. Long term the Health Center will also provide diagnostic service to help those who often have to travel all the way to the capital city of Kampala (280 miles away) for disease diagnosis. Please give this appeal a prayerful thought as to generously support it financially. God Bless you ALL. Envelopes will be in the pews.

Tuesday, August 6th

The feast of the Transfiguration of Christ celebrates the revelation of Christ's divine glory on Mount Tabor in Galilee (Matthew 17:1-6; Mark 9:1-8; Luke 9:28-36). After revealing to His disciples that He would be put to death in Jerusalem (Matthew 16:21), Christ, along with Ss. Peter, James, and John, went up the mountain. There, St. Matthew writes, "he was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow."
