“From his fullness, we have all received grace upon grace” John 1:16.

Grace Part Five: : What about Mary and grace? “Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God” Luke 1:30. At first glance, we could easily say that Mary was greatly favored by God, but, as concepts about Mary and about the Church evolved, “full of grace” came to mean a great deal more than being favored. Mary has come to symbolize discipleship, and much of what is said about her can be applied to the Church.

There is really very little known about the historical Mary. She was a Jewish woman who lived in the first century. She was the mother of Jesus. Mary “did not follow Jesus about as a disciple during his ministry nor understand in any great measure what he was up to” but at some point “she came to share the faith of the very early Christian community and became a Christian believer.” There are few clear, considerable memories of Mary as active within Jesus’ ministry or that of the disciples after the resurrection. There were no teachings about Mary in the early church, before or after her death; “…rather, an impression of her as believing and faithful, hearing the word of God and keeping it, persisted and became the basis for her transformation within several decades into a corporate personality, reflecting the believing community’s own understanding of its relationship to God in Christ.” As part of the collective memory of the early Church, the image of Mary came to reflect the grace of God present in the growing Christian community of faith. These reflections made their way into scripture as statements of faith and openness to the presence of God in the world, like that of Mary’s saying “yes” to the angel’s pronouncement that she would bear a child.

A great many parallels can be drawn between Mary and the Church. The lives of both are centered on Jesus, and both are filled with grace. Mary, as Jesus’ mother, brought him to life; the Church brings Jesus to life in the hearts and minds of people. Mary is virgin; the Church commits in fidelity to Christ. “Mary is a pilgrim of faith”; the Church “is called to be hearer of the word, following Christ through history as the pilgrim people of” faith. Mary is a prophet; the Church proclaims justice for the oppressed. Mary is disciple; the Church is “the believing one who preaches and the preaching one who believes”, both simultaneously, throughout history. When we pray to Mary, we draw together both God’s love for her and for us as a people of faith as well as the grace given by God in loving relationship to propel the Church forward through history. When we praise her and bless her, we are saying something about our own discipleship and the grace that sustains it. There are two Church dogmas concerning Mary, both which hold strong symbolism for the Church. The Immaculate Conception declares that Mary was “conceived in the grace of God” and without original sin – a message for all of us that grace outweighs sin. The Assumption, “Mary’s entrance into glory” is “a symbol of the final transformation of our whole human reality, thanks to the power and the everlasting mercy of God,” revealing what awaits us as salvation. These celebrations of Mary “signify that at the beginning and end of life we are surrounded and affected by the redeeming grace of God, more powerful than any evil.” Simply amazing grace!

Thinking About Becoming a Catholic?

The R.C.I.A. (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process where those interested in learning about the Catholic faith come together on a weekly basis to learn about the scriptures and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, and at the same time, discover where God is present in their lives.

The process is designed for those adults who are:

Not baptized Baptized in another tradition Baptized Catholic, but with no further religious training

The process includes the celebration of sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil. (May include the sacrament of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.) Regular scheduled sessions for R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation) will begin in September. It is important that you register for this class by calling Pam Platt.

Hello! I am Matt Benitez and proud to be serving this community as the new youth minister! I have been involved with the Church since

second grade. I started as an altar server and decorating the church. Church has always been a big part of my life and continues to

be today. Ever since then my faith continued to grow and still is. When I reached eighth grade and joined a youth group it grew even more. The summer going into my freshman year of high school, I became a

Eucharistic minister and was a new member of a youth ministry in Elmwood Park. As I went to events with the youth group, I got the idea to start a youth group at my home parish since we did not have one. It

was my hope to bring a youth group to my parish because of the impact it made on my life. I wanted other teens to be able to

experience that same kind of impact it had on me. Life can be difficult when you are in high school, and having a community like a youth group can give you amazing support. I worked on getting the youth group started at my own parish, and became a lector and an usher. In my junior year of high school I began teaching religious education. My church life and all my tools just kept growing and I

kept feeling like my faith was on fire, and I just kept getting hungrier and hungrier. Since I kept feeling this way I continued to push my faith.

I am now 22 years old and will be 23 in October. I will be attending Dominican University to receive my Bachelor’s Degree in Theology because the Church is my calling, and the fire I have for my faith is so strong! I am also an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoy playing baseball, softball and helping coach

my youngest brother’s baseball team in my free time. I want to continue to grow and share my flame with all of you and help the teens find their fire, and especially show them how amazing they

are and the impact they can make in the world.

Healing From Divorce Monthly Workshop— Divorce is such a difficult time, creating confusion and emotional upset for all members of the family. The home may have felt like a battlefield for so long that it becomes difficult to remember what peace and happiness feels like. The goal of this group is to provide support in your grief and to help you find healing and hope. This ongoing support group is led by two professional counselors.
