A support group is involved in talks that may lead to the creation of a dedicated specialist school at Kyneton.

Macedon Ranges Central Victorian Autism Network is working on plans for a P-12 school catering for children with disabilities.

As reported by Star Weekly, the Star Weekly, the Star Weeklynetwork has previously oated the idea of an autism centre in the new Kyneton education precinct, amid reports that local schools had told parents they could guarantee a pupil’s safety for only three hours a day.

Network spokeswoman Fiona Le Nepveu said their vision had been expanded to include children with other disabilities, in response to frustrations about the area’s lack of education options.

Mr Coughlan called on petrol companies to explain the variation.

‘‘As I’ve said before, it’s just as easy to transport fuel to Sunbury as it is to Craigieburn.

‘‘It still seems that, for whatever reason, there is a Sunbury tax.’’

Mr Coughlan encouraged motorists in other areas to also follow pricing trends.

‘‘en we can go to the companies, to the government, with hard facts,’’ he said.

‘‘at way they can’t say, ‘Oh, you just perceive it to be that way’.’’

By Matt Crossman

Sunbury motorists continue to be victims of a ‘tax’ that petrol companies have yet to explain, according to a driver who is undertaking a detailed analysis of fuel prices.

As reported by Star Weekly last December, motorist Steve Coughlan started comparing prices in Sunbury, Craigieburn and Bulla aer a wave of social media complaints about discrepancies between unleaded prices in the three towns.

Last week, the going rate in Sunbury remained at least ve to six cents per litre dearer than the other two towns, even as petrol prices dropped to less than a dollar in many areas.

‘‘I really can’t gure it out, and no one is able to tell me why,’’ Mr Coughlan said. ‘‘Christmas was a bit of an anomaly, but in the new year it’s just settled right back into rhythm with Sunbury motorists having to pay more.

‘‘Sometimes it can be up to 10 cents. Even six to seven cents a litre might not sound like a lot, but it sure adds up over a week.’’

Mr Coughlan, who is preparing to take his concerns to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, said responses from the social media accounts of BP and Coles Express had failed to shed any light.

‘‘ey continue to say ‘we have a number of factors which determine our pricing’, but they won’t explain why Sunbury has to pay more,’’ he said.

e Australian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association and BP did not respond. Coles Express does not comment on pricing.

Fuel prices signal a ‘Sunbury tax’

Sunbury residents undergoing rehabilitation will no longer have to travel to access a warm water pool.

Sunbury Leisure and Aquatic Centre has been earmarked for a $2 million upgrade, the day aer its 50th anniversary celebrations.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins was in town to announce the Interface Growth Fund on Monday.

She said a new 15 x 12 metre warm water pool meant the centre would be able to cater for a rapidly increasing population, with the number of people living in the town expected to increase by almost 50 per cent over the next 15 years.

More than 10 per cent of Sunbury’s population is aged 65 or older.

‘‘e Sunbury warm water pool will provide a great facility for residents, who won’t need to travel to other areas to take their kids to the pool or for things like mobility classes,’’ Ms Hutchins said.

Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the exciting development would make the aquatic centre even more popular.

‘‘is town looked a lot dierent 50 years ago, and so did the pool site,’’ she said.

‘‘ese improvements will ensure the centre meets the needs of the community well into the future.

‘‘e new pool will also make more spaces available in the existing 25-metre indoor pool.’’

e announcement comes less than a fortnight aer Hume council purchased land for a new global learning centre and library in Macedon Street.

A glassblower whose work is wowing visitors to Piper Street’s Kyneton Museum is one of many artisans demonstrating their crasmanship at this weekend’s Lost Trades Fair.

Ruth Allen is among almost 100 traditional crasmen and women taking part in the latest iteration of the fair, which drew more than 15,000 people to Kyneton racecourse last year.

Allen says the event is a great opportunity for people to meet the makers and gain a new appreciation for traditional cras that were once central to people’s daily existence.

World of lost arts comes to life‘‘ings like Lost Trades springing up in

recent years show there is growing recognition of the incredible skills of people in these cras and trades,’’ Allen says.

‘‘It’s a great way to put it front and centre. ‘‘Too many people are under the false

impression that things from China or wherever are cheaper and better.

‘‘But really, if you want quality and you want people like me to continue, you have to buy Australian-made, where possible.’’

Chair-makers, silversmiths, coopers,

gunsmiths, food producers and even Penny Farthing makers will be part of this year’s fair.

Allen’s museum exhibition features a gorgeous array of contemporary chandeliers, pendant lights and jewellery, along with heritage Victorian glass. Translucence closes Sunday. Tickets: $7. Entry to the Lost Trades Fair at the racecourse costs $15.

A Kyneton trac cop whose police academy colleague was killed in the line of duty is training for a charity ride to a national memorial in Canberra.

Leading Senior Constable Brett Magrath says he will look up the name of Rennie Page when he completes the 360-kilometre marathon, dubbed the Police Legacy Ride to the Wall, on May 16.

Senior Constable Page died aer being struck by a car while performing a routine trac stop on the Hume Freeway near Benalla in 2005.

About 60 ocers from across Victoria will take part in this year’s three-day ride from Corryong on the NSW border to the national police memorial in Canberra. Money raised helps the families of fallen ocers.

Leading Senior Constable Magrath, who has been stationed at Kyneton since 1998, says it’s a great way to honour the legacy of the 600-plus names featured on the memorial wall.

‘‘Since I joined in 1994, there’s been more than a dozen ocers from Victoria who have died, most of them from the trac management unit,’’ he says. ‘‘It will be a personal thing for me, for sure. Rennie walked into the police academy the same day I did and, when he died, he was doing the exact same thing I do, day in and day out.’’

Leading Senior Constable Magrath is putting in hundreds of kilometres in preparation for the event, starting on May 13. To donate, visitgoo.gl/vCtWp

Alarming new research shows the number of people living with dementia in Hume and the Macedon Ranges is expected to soar by more than 640 per cent over the next 35 years.

A study commissioned by Alzheimer’s Australia has found that cases in Hume will increase from 1807 this year to more than 13,000 by 2050.

In the Macedon Ranges, the number of people aected by dementia is set to climb from 718 to 5787.

She said a ‘‘massive shi’’ was needed so people could recognise early warning signs and understand how and where to access information and support. She said increased awareness would reduce the stigma and lessen the social isolation of suerers and families.

Hume council city communities director Margarita Caddick said all levels of government must increase services for people with dementia as the population continues to age.

Council-based home care sta will take part in specic Alzheimer’s Australia training to enhance their skills.

Annual increases of more than six per cent a year are expected to give Hume the eighth-highest prevalence statewide (from 24th), while Macedon Ranges will go from 43rd in Victoria to 27th.

e gures have prompted calls for greater investment in support services, including dementia-specic facilities, and education campaigns to improve public awareness.

Alzheimer’s Australia chief executive Maree McCabe said that by 2050 everyone will be aected by dementia, either by diagnosis or knowing someone with the disease.

Dementia tally to soarSunbury dog owners are being warned to keep their pets leashed in areas targeted by Hume council’s annual rabbit control program.

Bait is being used in areas with high rabbit populations, including Emu Bottom Wetlands, Parkway Reserve and Glade Reserve.

e council will also fumigate burrows at Albert Road Reserve, Sunbury Fields estate, Emu Valley Reserve and e Nook, until April 8.

Follow up works may be carried out aer inspections in May and June.

Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said rabbits cause serious problems, including erosion and the destruction of native vegetation.

“e rabbits graze to an extraordinary level, and this makes it hard for native vegetation to regenerate,’’ she said. “e pests cause soils to erode, and they take away food that is relied on by native animals.”

While the council is using an oat-based bait considered to be of low risk to domestic animals, pet owners are urged to keep dogs on leash in aected areas.

Cr Patsikatheodorou also urged landowners in adjoining areas to undertake rabbit control measures.

“Council works hard to stay on top of rabbits, partly because they breed so well,’’ she said.

“A female European rabbit can give birth to 28 kittens in just one year, and each kitten is able to move onto new areas of land at just three months of age.”

People wanting to manage garden pests without resorting to chemicals are being encouraged to take part in a free workshop at Woodend Neighbourhood House this Saturday.

Local permaculture expert Mariette Tuohey (pictured) will share sustainable and non-toxic gardening methods from 10am until noon.

She says the hands-on class will show people how to achieve a balanced ecosystem in their backyards.

e workshop will cover topics including garden and soil ecology, pest identication and design principles.

‘‘e end result … is a garden that is biodiverse, eliminating the chance of a big outbreak of pests,’’ Ms Tuohey says.

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges councillors have echoed the Victorian Local Governance Association’s calls for more women to stand as candidates in October’s council elections.

With women comprising fewer than 35 per cent of the state’s 631 councillors, the association is campaigning to increase the level of female representation this year.

GoWomenLG 2016 urges women involved in community life to consider standing and calls on councillors and local government

Cr Sally Piper said female councillors could provide dierent and valuable perspectives.

‘‘at’s why we want gender equality,’’ she said. “Generally, councils are great at supporting women in local government.

“ere’s childcare rebates and so on. Women need to realise there is support and exibility there.’’

Cr Piper urged anyone with experience at board level to put their hand up.

‘‘We want experienced people who are used to dealing with budgets and making big decisions.’’

employees to share information about how the system works.

Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said women were under-represented in council chambers.

Just three of Hume’s 11 councillors are female.

‘‘We should have at least ve women on council if our decision makers are truly and fairly representing the make-up of our community,’’ she said.

Two of the nine Macedon Ranges councillors are women.

A pool party was the perfect 50th anniversary celebration last Sunday for Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre, a training ground for the likes of Olympic gold medallist Chantelle Newbery and Paralympion Chris Mullins.

e centre, which also helped develop AFL footballer James Kelly and Olympic swimmer Samantha Hamill, opened on March 6, 1966.

What started as a 50-metre outdoor pool became a major sports centre in May 1989, when the then Bulla council unveiled an indoor pool, gym, spa and steam room, and childcare centre. An expanded gym was opened in 1992, with another expansion completed in 2006.

Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the council hoped to add a warm water pool in coming years.

People are invited to the cutting of a giant birthday cake at the centre at 10am this Friday. Helen Patsikatheodorou with Tyler, Kaylee-Shae and Marley. (Joe Mastroianni)

Georgie Patterson has no qualms about visiting Daylesford’s renowned Lake House restaurant wearing her work clothes and muddy gumboots.

When trufe harvesting season begins in June each year, Georgie can be seen around her Trentham-centred patch, delivering trufes to chefs including Alla Wolf-Tasker (Lake House co-owner and food legend) and the renowned Annie Smithers, among many other local restaurateurs who want to add trufe magic to their dishes.

She also has household cooks lining up at the farmhouse gate to snafe the best harvest pickings.

Georgie has been in the trufe game for about eight years, harvesting the funky, earthy, sought-after nuggets of fungus growing under her evergreen and deciduous trees. Because pigs, being pigs, ate most of the trufes they found, dogs are now the go-to treasure nders. Georgie breeds eld spaniels for the task, beautifully trained and expertly managed. She also has potential companions for sale.

“The dogs love their trufe job,” says Georgie. “They’re trained to know that, once they’re put in harness, they’re off on a hunt. In fact, they somehow know the day before the hunt – dogs are such sense-driven animals.

“A well-trained dog can do only an hour’s snifng before it goes off, and we need to

be tuned into its behaviour to be tuned into its behaviour to gauge this.

“I happen to believe that eld “I happen to believe that eld spaniels are ideal as trufe spaniels are ideal as trufe nders, but, really, any dog nders, but, really, any dog could be trained to do it. ‘He’d could be trained to do it. ‘He’d be dynamite, mate’, is how I put be dynamite, mate’, is how I put it recently to an older gentleman it recently to an older gentleman when he laughingly asked if his when he laughingly asked if his chihuahua could nd trufes.”chihuahua could nd trufes.”

The common view that trufes carry The common view that trufes carry an exorbitant price tag is one that Georgie an exorbitant price tag is one that Georgie would love to see put to bed.would love to see put to bed.

“When you consider that 10 grams of trufe “When you consider that 10 grams of trufe for each person would be enough to make a for each person would be enough to make a dish memorable, it works out about $30 for a dinner party – the price of a bottle of wine.

“And trufe cultivation is no walk in the park. It can be a hit-and-miss business, a bit of a mystery in its process … it involves quite a bit of care to encourage inoculated (oak or hazelnut) trees to produce. Soil has to be prepared and tested regularly, trees need correct watering and pruning, and it’ll be a six- or seven year wait to see if you have success. One out of 10 trees producing is about average.”

So, if you’re yet to sample the delights of trufes, put it on your must-try list … and think of Georgie in her gumboots.

27 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 8, 2016

SPORTBurras not there to make up the numbersDiggers Rest Bulla is one win away from its rst Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup premiership.

In their rst season back in the top division, the Burras have surpassed most expectations by making it through to the nal game of the season, in which they will play Gisborne.

Burras playing coach Kevin Barker said he and his players were about much more than making up the numbers in the nals.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” he said aer the semi-nal win against Woodend.

“We’re pretty rapt. Maybe everyone else thought we would just look to stay up but we were there to make nals. It’s anyone’s game in nals and we believe in ourselves.”

At the weekend against Woodend, which nished the season on top of the ladder, the Burras made 192.

Blake Robinson made 55 and Barker chipped in with 31.

e lower order ensured the Burras pushed towards 200 aer the side had earlier looked to be in trouble.

In reply, Woodend looked to be going well at 3-91. But from there, it lost wickets frequently to be all out for 164. Josh Eastley top-scored with 62.

“I think both sides bowled well,” Barker said. “And there were run-outs in both innings. I think nals pressure got to both sides. We were pretty condent [that] as long as we bowled

well, we could be a chance. We didn’t catch as well as we would have liked.

“We created enough chances. ere was at least seven clear chances we dropped. Including half chances – we dropped about 10.”

Lindon Dowsett took three wickets and Rhys Berry, Darren Quarrell and Barker took two each.

Even though they are looking for their rst top-grade premiership, no one will underestimate the Burras, who are big-time performers.

is grand nal will be the fourth straight for the team.

e rst of those came in 2012-13 when the Burras won the C-grade premiership. Aer

losing the B-grade grand nal to Gisborne in 2013-14, they won the B-grade ag last season.

“We’ve had a lot of nals success and there’s a lot of belief in the boys,” Barker said.

He said the side was ready for the challenge of playing Gisborne, which beat the Burras in the last round of the regular season.

“It’s an amazing time for the guys and the key is to enjoy the week,” he said.

“I’m proud so far of the boys but you don’t make grand nals to lose them. We have intentions to win it.

“Hopefully, the boys are up for the challenge.”

Tara Murray

If it wasn’t for a mate being unable to play, Shane Woolley may never have joined Asheld Cricket Club.

“One of my mates messaged me one Saturday,” Woolley recalls. “He owned a factory in Sunbury and asked if I could go down there and open it so his neighbour could have his forkli, which was in the factory.

“I did that and went to give the keys back and he was like, ‘I have to play cricket and I’m in no state to play. Can you ll in for me?’”

at was 11 or 12 years ago … the 47-year-old was still making runs last weekend.

He made 87 of them in the Asheld E-grade team’s loss in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s nal round.

“I’ve been trying to retire as a player for the past couple of years,” Woolley said. “I said I would retire when there are enough players that they don’t need me to ll a spot.”

While still contributing on the eld, it’s o eld that Woolley has had his biggest impact; he’s been club president for the past eight seasons.

Leadership roles are something that sit well with Woolley. He was president of Coolaroo Cricket Club and helped start the men’s teams there, aer the men decided they wanted to play, not just watch their wives and partners.

He also spent a year as president at Sunbury Kangaroos Football Club, which at the time was known as the Rovers.

“I come from a corporate banking background and managing teams [there]. It’s not that dierent from running sports clubs,” Woolley said.

“ere are 50 to 70 members and you’re trying to look aer their best interests.

“As president you have to be the person who stands up and delivers.”

Achievements of the club during Woolley’s time in charge include expansion from two teams to three and a greater family involvement. And there have been two premierships and three T20 pennants during his presidency.

“We’ve always wanted to create a family environment and we’ve created a great culture o the ground,” Woolley says.

“Five to six years ago, we had three or four juniors at the club. I look out there now and I can count 16 or 17 kids who are under 18. And there’s six or seven father-son combinations.

“When I move on, that’s one thing I’ll be proud of … we’ve had three waves of kids come through while I’ve been here.

“I will sit back and watch the kids play cricket

‘Accidental’ player bats on

once I’ve done my time and feel satisfaction and comfortable that they’ll take us to the next level.”

Another cultural shi is the relationship between the club and the Kangaroos – both use Boardman Reserve as a home ground.

“e last ve to six years, we’ve been using the Kangaroos’ social rooms and it’s contributed a lot to our culture,” Woolley says.

“Allan Walters and Richard Kelputis [football club president and former vice-president] were really fantastic about it.

“e last four years, we’ve had a pink stumps day between the two teams.

“I spoke to Allan at the game and said we’d be sitting in the corner with a few drinks in four to ve years and it will be 10 times as big as it is now.”

Woolley says he couldn’t have managed his time as club president without his wife, Robina.

“She’s my driver and inspiration, and none of this would have happened without her,” he says.

“She has put in as much as me. “Every Saturday she comes to the club and

makes a home-cooked meal for the players and their families.”

He also pays tribute to the work of coach Jason King and secretary Kat Muir.

“You are only as good as the people you have around you,” he adds.

One of his proudest moments on the eld was the day he played with his son Corey.

“I played with him in his rst senior game – his rst win, his rst catch and rst wicket. It’s absolutely rewarding, and a lot of times we’ve had ‘caught Woolley, bowled Woolley’.

“I want to play competitive cricket with my son,” he says.

“I still want to make more runs than him, but I’ve accepted he’s a far better cricketer than me. I hadn’t wanted to recognise it was true.”

Woolley’s leadership is set to continue for at least another season.

“I was talking about standing down at the end of this season,” he said.

“We’ve been looking at Corey playing turf cricket and someone will need to drive him there.

“He probably hasn’t made enough runs this year to make the move, so he’s likely going to stay another year at Asheld.

“If the members vote in favour of me, I’ll stay on another year.”

‘‘ We’ve had three waves of kids come through ’’

By Tara Murray

e monkey is o the back for Sunbury Bowling Club aer it won the Bowls Victoria division 2, section 2 title on Sunday.

Aer making in to the section nal in the past three years before falling short, Sunbury made no mistakes this time round.

Sunbury won its sectional semi-nal on Saturday with ease, taking the victory over Glenroy (2) 96-60.

at set up a clash with West Coburg, which shocked Fitzroy Victoria (2) in their semi-nal.

The Sunbury rink of Judy Staiton, Marc Bullows, Brad Janner and Deeon Dean look over the action against Glenroy on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)

Sunbury makes its moveSunbury’s Dave Glennon said the victory

was never in doubt despite his side losing two of the four rinks.

“We lost both those rinks by two shots each, but that was easy to make up with the other rinks,” he said. “We continued the momentum from the home-and away-season recording two big wins to get the title.”

In the nal, Brad Willoughby’s rink won 35-8, Brad Janner won 23-14, Mark Cowan lost 20-18 and Elise Cowan’s rink lost 16-4.

Glennon said the win meant the club would be promoted to division 1 for next season.

Despite the title win, the season isn’t over for the top Sunbury side, which is still in the race for overall division 2 champion. Glennon said the side would be missing a few players for this weekend’s match but was still condent. e team’s opponent was unknown at time of press.

It was a good weekend for Sunbury, with two of its four sides winning titles and a third nishing runner-up. Sunbury (5) was the other winner, claiming the division 8, section 2 title.

Kyneton Golf Gold will play Gisborne in the Central Highlands Bowls division 1 grand nal.

Gisborne pulled o a major upset against Frankston to secure its place in the CV Women’s Community Cricket Shield one-day grand nal.

Frankston nished the regular season on top of the ladder, so was a strong favourite against fourth-placed Gisborne going into Saturday’s semi-nal.

Led by star batter Sarah Gunn, the Dragons posted a massive 198 o their 40 overs.

Gunn, who reached 30 or more in eight of her 20 matches this season, top-scored with 57.

Anne Walton made 44, while Erin Kennedy pushed the score at the end of the innings with 39 not out.

An inspired bowling performance ensured a comprehensive win for the Dragons.

Frankston started the chase well and was in control at 2-90 before a result-changing collapse.

ey lost their last eight wickets for 27 to be all out for 117.

Amy White took 4-24, while Kennedy and Walton took two wickets each.

It’s the Dragons second grand nal for the season, having lost to Brunswick in the shield T20 grand nal earlier this year.

ey will face Mt Martha which defeated Brunswick on Saturday.

Chasing 132, Mt Martha made 5-134 to seal its grand nal spot at Ferrero Reserve, from 1pm on Saturday.

29 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 8, 2016

Early signs promising for Sunbury’s young guns ere’s a bit of the unknown for Sunbury Kangaroos in the Riddell District Football League this season.

Aer being in the top six for most of last year before injuries destroyed any nals hopes, it will be a new-look Kangaroos this season.

Jarrod Dixon has rejoined as coach, but the club has farewelled several of its experienced players in both seniors and reserves.

Dixon says he’s under no illusions where the side is at heading into the season.

“We’ve got a strong list this season despite an exodus of senior players, but the competition keeps getting stronger,” he says.

“e likes of Diggers Rest and Broadford have good, strong lists and have recruited well. We have a young list, which bodes well.

We’re not too sure about the immediate future, but it’s exciting for the long term.”

Dixon says early signs have been encouraging, especially from players who were there last year.

“Numbers have been fantastic and the buy-in factor from the group exceptional.

“We’re averaging 45 to 60 at every training session, which is really good.

“I’ve been impressed with the group that’s been here for a few years. ey’re the ones stepping up and leading the charge.”

Dixon says most of his players this season will be between 19 and 26, and having them in the same age group has helped with connecting o the eld as well.

“I think there are still 15 players from the premiership side in 2012 and now they’re around the 24-25 mark.

“We’re a young team but we still have senior experience and no doubt it will benet us.”

e club’s o-season recruits are all in that age bracket.

“James Barnes, Curtis Schultz, Ryan Pretty and Zane Williams are all in that age group of 19 to 24 or 25, so they t in perfectly,” Dixon said.

Matt Wallace, Dylan La Sala and Brad Konwalow are among the other recruits.

And among those not returning are Simon Clarke, Jay Cheep, Dylan Murphy, David House, Roger Allen and Phillip Kaufmann.

e Kangaroos kick o their season against Romsey on April 16.

Rupertswood has blasted its way to its biggest score of the season – and a grand nal in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition.

Looking to capitalise on a form that only lost it two matches for the year, Rupertswood came out ring against Bacchus Marsh last weekend.

While Bruce Marshall’s wicket was lost for two, Rupertswood took control of the game from the start.

Rupertswood president Peter Kavanagh said the boys had worked hard during the week and were focused on getting on top early on.

“e boys didn’t want a repeat of previous years,” Kavanagh said. “John Lane had them really focused. Once we got o to a good start, the runs continued.

“A couple of guys probably sacriced themselves to push the score up. We had wickets in hand, so we wanted to push to a competitive score.”

Rupertswood went on to make 8-303. Mark Ryan made 86, while Patrick Tyler made 65.

Kavanagh said the side was condent aer the rst day of the match it could get the win.

“Making 300 on our ground doesn’t happen oen,” he said. “Our bowlers are the ones who normally do the job, and they did that on Sunday.

“It was just about bowling good line and length, and keeping the pressure on from the start.”

Bacchus Marsh was bowled out for 171. Aaron Forward and Brandon Webber took four wickets each.

Rupertswood will now play St Anthonys in the grand nal aer St Anthonys easily accounted for Wallan in their semi-nal at the weekend.

Rupertswood and St Anthonys faced o in the nal round of the regular season, with Rupertswood taking the points. St Anthonys won the early season match-up between the two by one run.

e grand nal will be played at Rupertswood.

“I’m hoping the home ground advantage will get us across the line,” Kavanagh said.

Rupertswood’s senior side is one of three from the club to make it through to grand nals.

“e rsts, seconds and hs are in the grand nal,” Kavanagh said. “It’s an outstanding feeling around the club.

“To have the rsts and seconds side by side during the grand nal is amazing for the club.”

A stunning all-round performance by Tahir Afridi has helped Gisborne to a grand nal appearance in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup.

Afridi, a standout in his rst season with the club, shone with bat and ball in the weekend’s semi-nal against Riddell.

On Saturday, Afridi and Dragons playing-coach Simon Harman rescued their innings with the score at 5-63.

Harman said the partnership came at a perfect time.

“We just had to bat sensibly and tick the scoreboard over,” he said.

e pair added 87 for the sixth wicket to take the score to 5-146.

Once Harman fell for 63, Afridi continued on, pushing the tally towards 200.

He fell for 86, which included 12 fours and three sixes, the Dragons’ innings ending not long aer for 208.

“If you’d oered me 200 at the start of the day we would have taken it,” Harman said.

“It would have been nice to make a few more, but it was a good day.

Matthew Darby and Matt Livingstone took three wickets each for Riddell, which looked on track to make the runs with ease in the rst half of its run chase. At one stage, it needed 98 runs with ve wickets in hand.

“We had a couple of chances go down early in the eld, which is unlike us,” Harman said,

“We had a brilliant run-out and that was crucial. Aer tea it went our way.

Enter Afridi, again.Having already claimed two wickets, the

medium-pacer took a hat-trick over two overs.“It was absolutely exceptional from him,”

Harman said. “He found something and bowled himself into the ground. With Clint Young hurting his calf, we were a bowler down so someone had to step up.

“I felt sorry for Tahir at the end of the day, bowling so many overs.

A Riddell ght-back took it to within 18 runs of victory.

“You start to think that maybe it wasn’t our day,” Harman said. “It got very close and I had a feeling we could get a chance – but we had to take it.”

Riddell was bowled out for 191, with Afridi taking 7-77 o 33.5 overs.

Gisborne’s previous grand nal win came in B-grade in 2013-14 when it defeated Diggers Rest Bulla, its opponent again in this weekend’s decider.

It was a good weekend for the Dragons with their C-grade side, women’s team and three junior teams making it through to grand nals.
