A trial ban of smoking in the O’Shanassy Street restaurant precinct could be the rst step towards a smoke-free Sunbury, a Hume councillor believes.
Sunbury-based councillor Jack Medcra said the wheel of public opinion had turned and most residents would support bans on people lighting up in public areas.
‘‘e fact is smoking kills people and passive smoking is a huge concern,’’ he said.
e east side of O’Shanassy Street will
Sunbury trials smoke banbe smoke free between Station and Brook streets for a year from April 4, aer the council approved a proposal led by Sunbury Community Health (SCH), Sunbury Business Association and traders last week.
ose who refuse to butt out will face nes of up to $200.
A survey of more than 150 people last year found 88.5 per cent supported the trial ban.
Cr Medcra said extending the ban across the town centre would be a big step, but the support was there.
‘‘We would cop ak over it from some people
… but the survey with the O’Shanassy Street proposal showed the community is saying that if you want to smoke, go to another spot. Enjoy your cigarette, but don’t share it with us.’’
Cr Medcra said people regularly complained about high levels of smoking outside the town’s shopping centres.
‘‘ey just want to be able to walk into a shopping centre and not have to go through a wall of smoke,’’ he said.
SCH’s ‘building healthy communities’ executive manager Bernie Hetherington has no doubt the trial will be successful.
‘‘We’re hopeful it will lead to permanent measures, which could include other areas,’’ she said.
Vic’s Food and Wine owner Vic Scerri expects the ban will have a positive eect on trade.
‘‘ere’s nothing worse than trying to eat and getting a pu of smoke in your face,’’ he said. ‘‘Customers are rapt they will be able to eat in a smoke-free environment.’’
Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said council ocers would continually evaluate the trial. ‘‘We’re keen to know what people think.’’

e station manager of Sunbury’s 3NRG community radio has been remembered as a ‘‘straight shooter’’ who was always there when someone needed a hand.
e death of Michael Cherriman (pictured), who had been part of the station team since the mid-1990s, was announced on air early on February 8.
‘‘Mike has been an incredible asset to the station over the years and he will be greatly missed,’’ station president Adrian Lodders told listeners.
He said the ‘‘station elder and dear friend’’ had played a vital role in the organisation through his roles as a presenter, committee member and station manager.
Mr Lodders later told Star Weekly that many people had been saddened by the news.
‘‘Not only was Mike a great supporter of what 3NRG was doing in the community, but he was a very good mentor as well,’’ Mr Lodders said. ‘‘He was a straight shooter who was always happy to pass on his knowledge.’’
Mr Lodders said Mr Cherriman had been battling ill health but had been doing well until his condition deteriorated in recent weeks.
He is survived by his wife Lyn and three children.

House prices in Gisborne, Kyneton and Romsey are expected to grow solidly over the next few months aer a strong nish to last year.
Latest Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) gures reveal that median prices in regional areas (up 2.2 per cent in the December quarter) outstripped those in metropolitan areas (down 0.1 per cent).
Prices in the Macedon Ranges were no exception, with the median in Gisborne South
Ranges attract city home buyersclimbing 27.1 per cent for the year to $937,500. e median in New Gisborne rose 14.8 per cent to $582,500.
Prices in Gisborne went up nine per cent in 2015 to $583,750, Kyneton increased 12.7 per cent to $487,500 and Romsey 11.1 per cent to $438,750. Going against the trend was Lanceeld, where the median fell 8.1 per cent to $414,500, although fewer than 50 sales were recorded last year.
REIV chief executive Enzo Raimondo said there was a denite trend, with Melbourne
buyers looking farther aeld for value, space and liveability.
‘‘e Macedon Ranges oers all three,’’ he said. ‘‘At $560,000, the median house price in the Macedon Ranges is signicantly lower than the Melbourne median of $718,000.
‘‘is places the location easily within commuting distance of Melbourne, at the top of the wishlist for many.’’
Mr Raimondo said house values in the Macedon Ranges, along with suburbs of Geelong and towns on the Bellarine Peninsula,
had grown signicantly in recent months.‘‘With this trend under way, it is likely that
house prices will continue to grow solidly in the rst half of this year,’’ he said.
RT Edgar Gisborne director Rick Lander said the Macedon Ranges was becoming one of the state’s property hotspots. ‘‘We deal with a lot of people from the northern suburbs, and what they can buy down there isn’t much by comparison.’’
He said buyers were interested in cottages, Victorian homes and lifestyle properties.
Pre-schoolers and primary school pupils can say ‘ni hao’ (hello) to Chinese language and story-time programs in Sunbury. Children can join teacher Ying Meng for stories at Goonawarra Neighbourhood House from 4.15-5.15pm on Tuesdays. A language class is held at the same time on Fridays. The sessions are designed to help prepare children for the jobs of the future and add to other Mandarin programs in the wider area. Students at Kyneton’s Sacred Heart College will gain insights into potential careers thanks to a new learning centre that opened last week. Named after former principal Sister Vivian Dwyer, the centre for years 10-12 students will act as a digital hub, equipped with interactive whiteboards and other technology. Teachers will be miked up to ensure learners don’t miss anything. Principal Craig Holmes said the senior years’ building would also be a base for the school’s VCAL programs. Two years of planning went into the project, with input from staff, students and parents. ‘‘We wanted a space that would help answer some of the big questions for students of that age,’’ Mr Holmes said. ‘‘Why all this effort? Where is it going to take me?’’

e V/Line crisis has had a dramatic eect on Bendigo train commuters, with punctuality plummeting from 83 per cent in December to just 64 per cent in January.
Performance data released last week revealed the line had the worst punctuality gures in the state. Reliability (services running as advertised), at 89 per cent, was also down from 98 per cent in December.
e latest gures come amid a crisis that led to the resignation of V/Line chief executive eo Taifalos, with thousands of services

Mr Knight said free travel had done little to ease commuters’ pain. ‘‘You just want a good service; you pay a lot of money for it,’’ he said. ‘‘When it works, it’s fantastic, but they’ve got to get it back to working well.’’

Long-time Woodend commuter Robert Knight said while replacement buses running express to Melbourne could sometimes be quicker, the saga had caused signicant disruption for many people.
‘‘It depends on your timing,’’ he said. ‘‘I deliberately get there early because I’ve been through this before.
‘‘Some people do get really angry about sitting on a bus, waiting for it to ll up before
Describing the train crisis as inexcusable, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan has ordered a review of V/Line operations.
Opposition public transport spokesman David Hodgett said Ms Allan and Premier Daniel Andrews had created a “train wreck” of the regional rail network.
“Daniel Andrews’ and Jacinta Allan’s bungled handling of the chaos on V/Line is costing taxpayers $4 million per week … all we get from them is more excuses and blaming.”
V/Line expects services on the Bendigo line to steadily improve from mid-February, but it will be months before full services resume.

Ten more foster carers are needed in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges to help children who have been removed from their families.
Anglicare Victoria will hold a series of information sessions as it looks to address a carer shortage and provide security for kids unable to live with their biological parents.
e support agency’s chief executive, Paul McDonald, said children in care were among the community’s most vulnerable.
‘‘ey move school oen, and they are usually behind academically, so they are always feeling like the new kid,’’ he said.
But love and stability can help them keep up with their peers.
‘‘at’s what foster carers do,’’ Mr McDonald said. ‘‘ey provide a supportive, secure and safe environment to come home to at the end of the school day.’’
Carers can be single, de facto or married, with or without their own children, working or at home. Anglicare provides training and 24-hour support in addition to tax-free reimbursement.
Sunbury’s Wayne and Lisa Spencer, who were accredited with Anglicare mid last year, got involved aer talking to people who had been foster carers.
ey’ve now been caring for three children for about six months.
‘‘We decided it was the right thing to do,’’ Mr Spencer, who has three adult children, said.
‘‘It’s about making a dierence, to be able to help kids get through what they are going through.
‘‘Plus it’s great to have children in the house again. It does keep you young. Although you do sort of forget how much washing kids have.’’
Ms Spencer said watching the children grow

and respond to the aection they are given was a real joy.
‘‘ey have greater condence, stability … a feeling of belonging and somewhere to come home,’’ she said.
Mr Spencer said there had been a few drawbacks.
‘‘Knowing how to deal with kids from
dierent backgrounds can be a challenge,’’ he said. ‘‘But you learn to adjust, and the support we’ve received from Anglicare with courses and so on has been fantastic.’’
Information sessions for people interested in learning more about foster care will take place in February and March. Details: 8470 9999 or www.anglicarevic.org.au/events

A place for kids to growGisborne’s new early learning centre is due to be completed next month. The $3.7 million centre in Robertson Street will provide rooms for three and four-year-olds’ kindergarten, two maternal child and health consulting rooms, a toy library and community space. Work has also begun on a new pavilion at Dixon Field, including four change rooms, referee rooms, meeting space and kitchen. This $1 million project is due to be nished in April.
Fresh spurt for old fountain A new petition calling for a water park to replace an old fountain in Sunbury’s Village Green is unlikely to get a guernsey, with Hume council working on plans to retain and upgrade the existing structure. More than 300 people signed the online petition in the days after it was created last week. But Hume city infrastructure director Peter Waite said work was already under way on a proposal to improve the fountain, built in the 1980s, after 500 people signed a different petition last year.
Road, path works under wayParks, footpaths, roads and bridges are being upgraded this month as part of a Macedon Ranges council campaign. Picnic settings and benches are going in at Woodend’s Corinella and Quahlee reserves and Kyneton’s Quarry Reserve. Resealing will be done on sections of Bawden Road, Woodend; McPhersons Lane, Pipers Creek; and Bourke Lane in Carlsruhe. Footpaths in Kyneton, Gisborne, Woodend, Lanceeld and Romsey will be improved.

Councils that are happy with the performance of their chief executive shouldn’t be forced to readvertise the job every four years.
at’s the view Hume chief Domenic Isola presented in a submission to a state government review of the Local Government Act.
Mr Isola, who also called for the introduction of a framework to prevent senior ocers from earning wages approaching their superiors, said requiring councils to ‘‘test the market’’ could waste time and cost ratepayers more money.
‘‘If you have assessments done in a professional way, with guidelines and key performance indicators, if at the end of the term the person in the job has met the requirements and done the things they’ve been asked to do, then why would you go to the expense and hassle of advertising that job?” he asked.
‘‘In this age of councils having to tighten their belts with things like rate capping, why would you do it?’’
Mr Isola, who has been chief executive at Hume since 2007, said the cost of advertising and hiring consultants to appoint a chief executive ocer could approach $35,000.
‘‘In the private sector, if the board is satised with the performance and direction, then they would not incur costs, time and uncertainty in going through a reappointment process,’’ he said.
‘‘Why should a council?’’Mr Isola said existing chief executive reviews
were independent and detailed. But Sunbury Residents Association president
Bernie O’Farrell said there was nothing wrong about making CEOs ght for their jobs.
‘‘If the job’s going to be readvertised, then they’ve got to perform at their best at all times, and that’s the best result for ratepayers,’’ he said.

A new chapter in the history of Riddells Creek Toy Library began on Saturday, with volunteers opening the doors of a new venue.
The library’s future was threatened in 2014 with years of declining membership taking their toll.
But a dedicated group of parents has worked hard to ensure children continue to have access to toys designed to entertain and challenge them.
Library president Bronwen Taylor said the venue’s new home, at the maternal child and health centre in Mahoneys Road, meant a new generation of kids would benet.
‘‘Parents can save money by becoming a member for a fraction of the price of buying toys new,’’ she said. ‘‘It helps avoid boredom as they can borrow new toys every week.’’
Memberships are available for $10 as part of an opening special.

Trac ows and safety along New Gisborne’s busiest stretch of road will improve with works on a $6.6 million upgrade of Station Road about to begin.
Two roundabouts will be built and existing lanes widened as part of the long-awaited project, funded by state and federal governments and supported by Macedon Ranges council and Gisborne Roads Group.
Bike and pedestrian paths and improved connections between Station Road and the Calder Freeway will also be built.
Cr Russell Mowatt said it was the biggest roads investment in the area since the Calder bypass in 1988.
‘‘e vehicle movements prior to the bypass in 1988 were about 12,000 per day,’’ he said.
‘‘We have, as a community, well and truly exceeded this as a result of internal development
and population growth.’’About 17,500 cars use the road linking
Gisborne with the freeway every day. is is expected to increase to 24,000 in the next two to ve years.
‘‘is is perfect timing in terms of the future population and economic growth for Gisborne,’’ Cr Mowatt said.
‘‘But there’s also the safety aspect, with vehicles backing up on the o ramps [of the Calder] during peak periods.’’
e work is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou says state and federal governments may need to take back some of the services they’ve been handing to councils.
Cr Patsikatheodorou said the state’s decision to peg council rate rises to the consumer price index (CPI) from this year had the potential to impact infrastructure projects and services.
She said over many years, councils had picked up funding for a large number of programs abandoned or limited by other levels of government.
‘‘We’re carrying a number of dierent
programs that used to be funded … that money was pulled and council thought those important programs needed to continue,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou said. ‘‘It would be really unfortunate if some of them had to go.’’
As reported by Star Weekly online, Hume is Star Weekly online, Hume is Star Weeklylikely to face tough choices in its next budget, with the municipality not among 21 councils to have agged the possibility of seeking to li rates by more than a 2.5 per cent cap.
All increases beyond the CPI will need a green light from the Essential Services Commission.
A list released by the ESC revealed that more than a quarter of Victorian councils have agged they could apply for an exemption to li

‘‘You can’t keep asking ‘give us more, give us more’,’’ she said. ‘‘ere’s a whole lot of other add ons, we’re collecting the re levy …the community doesn’t always know and they think it’s all us.”
Cr Patsikatheodorou said the council had until the end of the month to apply for an exemption.
‘‘We’ll continue to consider it seriously,’’ she said. ‘‘If we don’t apply, we’ll be looking at the whole council structure and seeing where we can make savings.’’

10 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 16, 2016
You were a victim of bullying yourself. How and when did it start? It started in year 7 and continued on until the end of year 9. I experienced face-to-face bullying and some cyber bullying. I believe it started because I am a little dierent, I think outside the square … I will stand up for myself.
What was the eect on you?I took a lot of time o school; we call them “mental health days” at home. I lost my self condence. I doubted myself all the time and lost sight of myself. I lost trust in people, I became withdrawn, and I would get upset really easily. I would dread going to school, I would oen come home and just cry, I had panic attacks and meltdowns at school, and I felt unsafe at school.
How did the idea of the pens and the anti-bullying campaign come about? As part of my year 9 assessment I was required to take part in a trade show. It was a self-directed project of my choice that I worked on from February to October 2015. Some of my friends had been bullied or were also being bullied, and they were self-harming, suering depression, anxiety, developing eating disorders and talking about suicide. Lauren Proudfoot from [Macedon Ranges council’s] Live4Life worked closely with me. e initial campaign included anti-bullying and mental health posters, banner pens and video interviews. I produced 1000 banner pens and 10 posters.
Were there people who helped you develop the idea/spread the initiative? Lauren … and my mum. My mum helped me

a lot with the administration side of things and writing the sponsorship requests. I also received a lot of help and support from teachers.
Do you feel that bullying has become more invasive with the advent of social media? Denitely, because it is not just at school any more. You can’t get away from it, you come home, you turn on your phone, iPad or laptop,
and there can be 100 horrible messages. You don’t feel safe anywhere.
What’s next? Is the pen program something you plan or hope to roll out further? My hope is to get enough money to produce up to 10,000 banner pens so all year 7-12 Macedon Ranges students have one; also medical practices and mental health agencies.
What’s your view on the support and opportunities available to young people?Mental health support has come a long way. ere are some amazing groups … but more are needed. e biggest challenge I see is getting the information direct to the individual that needs help. e other challenge is making bullies understand that they are bullying and making them appreciate the aect they have on people.

Originally a 1940s California bungalow, this character-lled place has had a few nips and tucks to slightly alter its prole but it’s kept all the good bits – Tasmanian oak oorboards and stepped cornices on high ceilings, and dark-stained timber picture rails, fretwork and sash window frames. Set back from the road on about 1.62 hectares, the house is hidden among trees and takes in spectacular views of Hanging Rock. French doors open onto three decks, additions that extend relaxation and outdoor dining options considerably. A spacious living room (with wood heater) links with a new kitchen, which uses recycled timber and has a stainless-steel underbench oven. Three bedrooms (or two with study) share a cute bathroom in the signature green of the era. Close to Newham and Woodend, and within four kilometres of Calder Freeway access, the property has a pretty creek running through it, and a spring-fed dam.

Surrounded by bush and native plantings on a block of about 3177 square metres, this house has been updated, with its original timber wall paneling, ceilings and exposed beams painted white to deliver a fresh new look. A large, carpeted lounge-dining room sits under a vaulted ceiling and links via a door and servery window to the big, modern country-style kitchen (oorboards) with white cabinetry, dishwasher, wall oven and electric cooktop. Enclosed with banks of windows, a rear north-facing pergola with crazy-paving underfoot becomes another year-round living zone. Four bedrooms include the main with en suite, and the main bathroom is a smart affair, with a Caesarstone-topped vanity unit and heated towel rail. A detached studio/ofce is a stylish space that would work well for visiting clients. An Arrow wood heater (with return) and a split-system tame the climate. A tennis court, town and tank water are other attractions at a property within a walk of town.

On a wide block of about 825 square metres, and with great views of the Mount, this is a place that will have property seekers lining up for a slice of life in a place full of characters. Not far from the Trading Post’s foodie haven, this older-style house (of about 15 squares) has no fewer than three living areas – a carpeted lounge room with a replace; a big family-meals zone; and a rumpus/TV room through an archway. The kitchen has abundant timber storage, a wall oven and a gas cooktop. Three bedrooms include the main with wardrobe and en suite. Gardens are established, and a double carport is suited to a garage conversion.

On about 790 square metres and a stroll away from everything in wonderful Trentham (hello good food and wine, sport, cute shops and temperate rainforest), this Edwardian does the period proud. Painted boards line most ceilings and walls; Baltic boards anchor most rooms; picture rails, deep skirts, original windows and replaces are here; and the entry hallway is classically central. Of the four bedrooms (and there’s a study/retreat), one has direct access to a two-way bathroom. A separate lounge room has a Ned Kelly wood heater, and a family-meals area is next to the country-charm kitchen with walk-in pantry and dishwasher. Right at the start of what’s locally known as “millionaire’s row”, this grand house on 0.41 superbly landscaped hectares is all class from go to whoa.
Not only does it have fab views over the township, it’s also a ne example of a house beautifully executed, with all those extra elements that stamp it as superior – stepped cornices and skirts; extra-height doors; spotted gum oorboards; conservatory-style windows; top-notch kitchen appliances and 2pac cabinetry; a fantastic outdoor entertainment set-up, and unstinting space in every area.
A carpeted entry hall has in-wall sliders to the right, leading to a large study/hobby room with a wall of cabinetry and the rst of the conservatory windows. A big laundry with lots of cupboards is next, followed by the huge living hub, which has an Arrow wood heater set in exposed bricks.
The kitchen here has a granite-topped island bench, soft-close drawers (28 in all), a vacuum sweep, a large walk-in pantry with kookaburra motif leadlight porthole, and an Ascot 1200mm dual-oven cooker with matching burgundy rangehood.
Double doors from the family room usher
in a gallery library, followed by a glorious sunroom with a wide bay window dressed in lovely roman blinds – and it’s here that the views come into full focus.
Down another carpeted hallway, there’s the skylit main bathroom with bespoke vanity unit, then a large study at the centre of three bedrooms, including the main, which has a tted dressing room and a big, beautiful en suite with dual basins and a clawfoot tub beneath a roof window.
The original garage has been converted to an entertainment room, with tilt-up windows providing abundant air ow.

“COMPASSION”Working in Real Estate entails working with people. As a Real Estate Agent or a Sales Consultant wecome across clients from all walks of life and manyare experiencing personal hardship and sorrow.
“Compassion” for others must be an essential part ofthe overall character of an Agent and those who workin the Real Estate Industry. This is a “service industry”an industry which must make “people” a priority.
As agents, we encounter those who have lost aspouse or partner.partner.partner Parents who are grieving the deathof a child. People who are dealing with terminal illnessand those coping with the debilitating and heartbreaking effectseffectsef of Dementia.
Today, I want to look at the effectseffectsef of Dementia andthe compassion, understanding and empathy thatwe, as agents, must have the maturity to show.
Last week my eldest brother passed away. A gentle, intelligent, creative and wonderful man, who, for20 years has suffersuffersuf ed the painful and unstoppableravages of Dementia.
There are so many families who are facing thechallenges, fears and heartache of a loved onesufferingsufferingsuf from this debilitating disease and it isabsolutely essential that Agents dealing with familiesgoing through difficult times are able to expressgenuine compassion, understanding and empathy.
As Real Estate is a “People” industry, if we as agentscannot “walk a mile in a client’s shoes” we are in thewrong industry.

29 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 16, 2016
SPORT
By Tara Murray
Having represented the state last year, Woodend’s Nick Grantham had a good idea of what to expect going into the trials for the Vic Country under-18 basketball team this time.
Passing through the trial process, Grantham made the Victorian Bushrangers squad that played at the Australian country championships in Albury earlier this year.
e nal Vic Country team was selected aer those championships.
It was at this event last year that Grantham was selected for the under-16 Vic Country team for the national championships.
Despite making national championships back then, Grantham wasn’t so condent this time around, being a bottom-age player.
“It was denitely a shock to make the team,” he said. “I was just aiming to be an emergency this year so I’m stoked to be picked.
“I played a lot better at the Albury Cup than I expected I would.
“It’s a really good opportunity and I’m excited to play.”
For Grantham, who has grown up around the Macedon Ranges Basketball Association, playing the game was something that just came naturally.
“My whole family has been into basketball,” he said. “My sisters were always playing so I was always at their games.
“Dad took a lot of training sessions and I was taken along to them. I’d then end up training with every age group. It was pretty full-on from a young age.”
So the 15-year-old will be a familiar face at the championships. His training partner, Kyneton’s Seb McCardle, was also selected.
Like Grantham, McCardle was part of the Vic Country under-16 side last season.
“I did a lot of training with Seb,” Grantham says.
“We started playing basketball together at Bendigo and then were at the same school. We’ve ended up in a few teams together.
“We did a lot of shooting and playing one on one and worked on each other’s weaknesses.”
Now in year 10 at Box Hill, Grantham continues to represent the Macedon Ranges Basketball Association under the watchful eye of Jason Balmer, who has coached at state level.
He also plays under-18s at Keilor.“About two years ago I moved from Bendigo
to Keilor to play,” Grantham said. “It was more for mum and dad, to help them with the travel for games and training.”
Grantham is hoping his basketball career will lead him to college in the US in future.
“Box Hill have said they will help me look at trying to get into college there. I’ve got some good contacts and hopefully we can work something out.”
Meanwhile, Sunbury’s Bethany eodore has been named as an emergency for the Vic Metro under-18 side.
eodore plays for Bulleen.

Develop and grow the list . . . that’s the aim for East Sunbury in the Essendon District Football League this season.
Aer winning only one game in its rst two seasons in division 2, the under showed signicant improvement by winning four games last season.
under coach Steve Grey says the aim this time around is to double the number of wins.
“We’re looking to win seven or eight and it’s already looking promising,” he said last week.
“ere are lots of numbers and lots of kids on the [training] track, which is good to see.”
While developing their young playing group, the under has been busy in the o-season, adding experience and strength, and submitting 25 clearances for players to join the club.
e biggest signing so far for the under is Dylan Tarczon.
e talented midelder, who played with Calder Cannons last season, has moved across from Ballarat Football League side Sunbury Lions.
But Grey isn’t expecting Tarczon to play much for the under because of VFL commitments with Coburg.
“If he isn’t playing with Coburg he will play for us,” Grey said. “We’ll be lucky if we get him for four to six games. When he does play, he’ll help out in the mideld.’’
under’s 2014 best-and-fairest winner Lucas Shaw returns to the club aer one season with Sunbury Lions, while other signings include Neil Johnson, Jack Sheckelton, Josh Shalders and omas Galea.
Galea and Shalders will provide size and targets up forward, while Johnson is expected to play on a ank.
“Neil used to be at Lanceeld and played a bit of juniors at Gisborne. He’s only 21-22,” Grey said.
“Josh has friends at the club. He’s a ruck, centre-half forward, who adds size.”
Grey says several of those players who were looking to come across to the club would play in the under-18 side.
“We need to build our junior base in the next couple of years and start getting games and experience into them,” he said. “Normally we have about 19 or 20 under-18 players at training, but we’ve got 27 to 28 so it’s building nicely.”
under kicks o its season against Burnside Heights on April 9.

Woodend earns a top spot in McIntyre Cup raceWoodend has joined the battle for top spot on the ladder in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup.
With a win over Diggers Rest Bulla on Saturday, Woodend jumped to the top of the ladder above the Burras and Riddell, which have shared the lead all year.
An interesting nal round is in store with just 1.32 points separating the three sides.
Woodend captain Adam Johnstone said it was the perfect time to be on top of the ladder.
“e season has been so close with some teams beating the top teams unexpectedly,” Johnstone said. “Being on top of the ladder does help … looking at the xture for next week,
there could still be a lot of movement. We’re very happy with the spot we are in.”
Johnstone said his players thought they were a 50 per cent chance of victory sitting at 4-28 chasing 149 going into day two of the clash against the Burras.
“We spoke about their bowling … that is their strength, no doubt about it,” he said.
“A combination of a couple of things went our way. We were lucky they put down a few chances in the eld that could have changed the game.
“We also got some luck with a couple of non-recognised batsmen doing a defensive-type job to stay with the batsmen.”
Woodend went on to make 241, with Johnstone praising the eorts of Tom Robson and Greg Matthews.
“Tom came in late on day one of the match and survived a few overs,” the skipper said. “On day two, he batted for three overs making 28. Greg batted well with Warren Else. We still needed 30 runs at that stage for victory. He stuck around until we could get the win.”
Else top-scored with 69 while Johnstone, who sits in the top 10 run scorers for the competition despite missing three rounds, chipped in with 53.
Johnstone said that once the victory was secured it was all about getting as many runs
on the scoreboard, with every run counting towards points.
“We talked about it and tried to take advantage of making as many runs as possible,” he said. “It’s how we nudged above Riddell.
“It’s an interesting points system they’ve introduced and it has changed the way teams look at things.”
Meanwhile, Riddell suered a shock loss to Sunbury, Gisborne defeated Sunbury United and Bacchus Marsh was too good for Romsey.
In a catch-up game on Sunday, Romsey defeated Sunbury.
