  • Volunteer Justin Pesa and Hume council biodiversity officer Roland Herbert helped plant native seedlings on World Environment Day, which was celebrated in Hume last week. The United Nations initiative is a vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment, with communities across the globe doing their bit to make a difference. The Hume community came together last Thursday to help plant 1500 trees at Bulla Recreation Reserve. The native seedlings will supplement the tree-planting done by Sunbury Landcare for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The wildlife habitat planting was part of the Victorian governments Two Million Trees program, from which Hume council received a grant. More information at www.unep.org/wed Yasemin Talat

    More than 300 people rolled up their sleeves in Sunbury last week to make a donation with a difference.

    But it wasnt money they came to donate it was blood.

    The Red Cross Blood Service mobile unit came to town to collect the red stuff and raise awareness for this years World Blood Donor Day on June 14.

    This year the donor day is aimed at tackling the increase in the number of Australian mothers needing blood transfusions when giving birth.

    Every year, about 4800 Aussie mums require a transfusion of blood and blood products at the time of birth.

    The Red Cross is hoping to highlight the role blood donation plays in saving their lives.

    Every blood donation has the power to save up to three lives, so the Sunbury community is doing their bit to help patients in need each time the mobile unit visits, the Red Crosss Erin Lagoudakis said.

    The mobile unit drives into Sunbury four times each year and stays for five days. During each visit the unit collects an average of 350 blood donations.

    We always get a fantastic response from the Sunbury community when we go there, Ms Lagoudakis said.

    She said blood donation played an important role in saving lives and she hoped the continued support from the community would help meet the needs of patients.

    Every week Australia needs to collect about 27,000 blood donations to meet the needs of patients and it only takes around an hour of your time, Ms Lagoudakis said. We all expect blood will be there when we need it, with one in three Australians needing blood in their lifetime, yet currently only one in 30 donates.
