A*STARThe Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN), a member of A*STAR’s biomedical sciences institutes, was established to spearhead the advancement of biomedical sciences in Singapore. innovation-driven Singapore.

As early as 2009, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between SST, IBN and Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd in an effort to nurture more young scientists and technopreneurs.

SST’s partnership with this renowned company has extended its learning networks for our students. SST Secondary 2 students participated in the Apple Education Leadership Summit 2011, an interactive event for education leaders committed to finding innovative ways to help teachers teach and students learn. Some students even took part in a reverse mentoring programme with one of the most impactful writers today, Daniel Pink, in front of an international audience of 500!

DSO National LaboratoriesA research and development institution specialising in defence-related technologies with more than 1,000 cross-discipline research scientists and engineers.

The bi-annual Singapore Amazing Machine Competition (SAMC) is jointly organised by SST, Science Centre Singapore, DSO and NUS High School. The SAMC is a science competition in which teams dream up and construct a complex machine that performs a seemingly simple task in as many steps as possible.

DigiPen Institute of TechnologyAn institution specialising in education and research in computer interactive technologies, catering to students from more than 32 countries worldwide.

All Secondary 1 students get to attend a workshop on games development at DigiPen Institute of Technology, a world renowned leader in education and research in computer interactive technologies. This interesting workshop teaches you to apply your mathematics and physics knowledge in ways you never thought possible!

Ngee Ann PolytechnicNgee Ann Polytechnic is one of Singapore’s leading institutions of higher learning. Its eight academic schools offer 48 full-time diploma courses.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic contributes to the extended and varied learning experiences of SST students. All Secondary 1 students attend a fun-filled and engaging two-day Innovation and Entrepreneurship Camp at Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), where they learn fundamental skills in design and market products to improve the quality of our lives. In addition, the Applied Subjects offered in SST are conducted by experienced NP lecturers.

Nanyang Technological UniversityA university founded on science and technology, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) nurtures creative and entrepreneurial leaders through a broad-based education in various disciplines.

The SST-NTU Flagship Programme is jointly organised by SST and eight schools of science, engineering and media design from NTU. This 3D2N residential camp at NTU aims to excite and inspire our Secondary 2 students towards the fields of engineering, design, technology and applied sciences. Every year, Secondary 2 students from SST get to attend an exciting 3D2N residential camp at NTU. The SST-NTU Flagship Camp offers participants the opportunity to work with professors and students from eight schools of Science, Engineering and Media Design on various projects of their choice

Winston Churchill, thought to be one of the best orators in history, memorised every speech forwards and backwards while practising just to hide his stutter. With SST’s language programme, students will learn how to speak, write and represent themselves fluently and effectively to reach the purpose, context, culture and audience of the message intended.

Taylor Wilson is an American teenager who was able to build a nuclear fusion reactor, a device that joins two atoms together and produces neutrons. He was noted in 2008 for being the youngest person in the world to build a working fuser. To nurture potential young Taylor Wilsons, SST exposes its students to real-world professional experiences, giving them an edge on and early mastery of their chosen career paths.

Some research claims that left-brain-dominant people find it easier to understand mathematically abstract concepts, whilst right-brain-dominant people find it easy to visualise geometric concepts. At SST, our holistic approach to mathematics will definitely pique students’ curiosity and enable them to easily grasp maths lessons – whichever side of the brain they are using the most.

Integrated Humanities

The study of the humanities can be traced back to ancient Greece. People were educated, without having a choice in their education. Soon, this compulsory system became the basis of an education. At SST, however, students are presented with a wide variety of learning experiences beyond the classroom and in numerous domains, so that they may be able to discover and develop hidden talents and interests.

This helps to reinforce andinternalise learning, resulting in deep understanding and more advancedcognitivepatternsofacquiring,synthesizingandcreatingnewknowledge.Hereishowwedoit:

TheappliedsubjectstakenbyuppersecondarySSTstudentsare judiciouslycraftedsoastoofferthesamerigourasany‘O’Levelsubject,andareofferedbyNgeeAnnPolytechnic.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic oversees every step of the programme, from initialadministrativefacilitationtofinalassessment.SSTstudentswillalsobegivenaccesstoadvancedfacilitiesandlabsnormallyunavailabletoothersecondaryschoolstudents.

All applied subject results are reflected in the GCE ‘O’ Level ExaminationCertificate and accepted for admission into local Junior Colleges andPolytechnics. Currently, applied subjects offered include Biotechnology,FundamentalsofElectronicsandMediaStudies(inEnglish).

Applied DisciplinesWith the firm foundation in applied subjects that SST offers in the uppersecondarylevels,youcanbesurethatyourchildhasaheadstartinthecareerofhisorherchoice.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology (sometimes shortened to read, ‘biotech’) is a field of appliedbiologythatinvolvesusinglivingorganismsandbioprocessesinengineering,technology, medicine and other fields. Products created from this industrymay also be used in manufacturing and other commercial purposes. Thecontemporaryuseofthistermencompassesgeneticengineeringaswellascellandtissueculturetechnologies.Thissubjectdeepensstudents’appreciationofconceptsinBiologyastheyareabletoseeandexperiencetheapplicationofknowledgeinthefield.

John Craig Venter is an American biologist and entrepreneur, most famous for his role in being one of the first scientists to sequence the human genome and create the first cell with a synthetic genome in 2010. Other professionals in this industry include medical geneticists, biomedical engineers and nanotechnologists.

Media Studies

Media Studies is a course of study that critically deals with the history and effects of various media of human communication. Traditionally focussed on the mass media, Media Studies draws on theories from both social sciences and humanities. Related subdivisions of this field of study include mass communication, communication, communication sciences and communication studies. Students also develop the essential competencies in critical thinking and nuances of effective communication.

Katie Couric was the first female anchor of a major US network’s evening news. She has appeared on 60 Minutes, presently serving as Special Correspondent for ABC News, contributing to ABC World News, Nightline, 20/20, Good Morning America, This Week and primetime news specials. Other professionals in this industry include public relations executives, creative directors or television producers.

Fundamentals Of Electronics

Electronicsisthebranchofscience,engineeringandtechnologydealingwithelectricalcircuitsthatinvolveactiveelectricalcomponentsandintegratedcircuitsaswellasassociatedpassiveinterconnectiontechnologies.PresentstudentsappreciatehowmuchthissubjectdovetailswithsomecomponentsinPhysics,andthisallowsthemtoapplytheoreticalknowledgetovariousapplications.

Steve Jobs was an American businessman and inventor widely recognised as a charismatic pioneer of the personal computer revolution. He was co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Other professionals in this industry include computer hardware engineers, aerospace engineers and electronic specialists.

SST holds an annual career event where our students’ parents give talks about their professions. Previous speakers have covered a broad range of careers from the pharmaceutical fields and emergency medicine to astronomy, business, engineering.

Science Hub

Opportunities for independent and joint research experimentation abound inour state-of-the-art Science Hub, which comprises nine laboratories (threededicatedtotheAppliedSciences)andatissuecultureroom.

TheuniquemultifunctionalNAWIS®systeminthePhysicslaboratoriesallowsformoreflexibilityandmobility in thesespaces.Special researchequipmentisavailabletosupportstudents’explorationsinfieldsofAnalyticalChemistry,BiomedicalSciencesandSensorTechnology.

Design and Media Studios

These studios facilitate design work for Art, Design, Media & Technologycourses, integrating the classroom, computer laboratory, view gallery andworkshopintoaseamlesslearningexperiencefordesignactivities.

Eco-Friendly Facilities

Atotalof306squaremetresofeco-gardenandmud-basedeco-pondallowstudents and staff to get in touch with nature while augmenting studies inappliedsciences.

With roof gardens with bio-retention ponds, eco-cooling systems and solarpanels, the SST provides students with a good example to emulate, andprepareforasustainablefuture.

SST is the first school in Singapore to install a NAWIS® system in its laboratories.
