I am very pleased to share the SSMO Foundation’s 2014 Annual Report for gifts received through the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014. I hope it gives you the same sense of accomplishment we feel about our efforts to promote the SSMO-sponsored ministries of outreach, healthcare and education.

We are pursuing some of our most exciting projects on campus thus far, creating new facilities to support our residents, students, faculty and staff. We believe these additions will have lasting, meaningful impacts on people’s lives; Maryville’s Transitional Care Unit, Valley Catholic’s athletic facilities, a new maintenance building, a science and engineering building, and a high school auditorium remodel are part of our ambitious plan to improve facilities and program for all.

As with all endeavors on campus, none of these could happen without the wholehearted leadership of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, the Boards of Directors, our generous families, friends, faculty, alumni, area businesses and volunteers galore! We are extremely grateful for the faith and inspiration you grant us through your gifts to support the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, Maryville residents, and Valley Catholic students, faculty and staff.

Thank you for making our work possible.

With sincere appreciation,

Patricia bloodExecutive Director, SSMO Foundation

“Thank you for making our work possible.”

“You bless us through the sense of

security created by your generous and

sincere sharing.”

letteR fROM the SSMO SUPeRIOR GeNeRal

It is with pride and genuine humility that I say you, as supporters of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon and our sponsored ministries of Valley Catholic School and Maryville, are part of our family. You, your parents and your children have been there throughout our history. You have shared our joys and sorrows, just as we have shared yours.

A Swedish proverb says “Friendship doubles our joy and divides our grief.” That’s pretty good math, by any measure. But in many ways, what we share is more than friendship. That was the case for the gentleman who wrote to me last year. He and his brother were cared for by the Sisters when our community ran St. Mary’s Home for Boys. Not long after his brother passed, he wanted us to know the vital role the Sisters had played in their young lives. “If it had not been for the Sisters’ guidance, love and perseverance, he would not have been such a good man. Please remember him in your prayers.”

No less important are the families who annually share their produce with the Sisters. Strawberries, peaches, pears, lettuce, squash, tomatoes, kale, walnuts – such bounty! All shared as large families do, from one brother or sister to another. You bless us through the sense of security created by your generous and sincere sharing. God bless you.

It is this love and support from you, our family of friends, that helps us continue our sponsored ministries and outreach. Let us always remember to pray for each other, wherever we are, so that we may continue to “double our joy and divide our grief.”

Blessings,

Sr. charlene herinckx, SSMO ’66Superior General

“So much is happening!

So much growth and so many

dreams fulfilled!”

letteR fROM the PReSIDeNt Of the SSMO MINIStRIeS cORPORatION

When one surveys the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon campus today, it very well may take one’s breath away. So much is happening! So much growth and so many dreams fulfilled! It hearkens back to the turn of the 20th century when…..

In May, 1902, Mother Theresa Heuberger took her first step toward opening a boarding school in connection with the Motherhouse (at that time, located north of TV Highway). A general chapter of the thirty-three perpetually professed members was called to deliberate on the advisability of borrowing money to finance it. They were overwhelmingly behind the venture. Mother Theresa set out with her usual precision. A week later she borrowed $2,600 and two weeks later the building program began.

Day classes were opened to both boys and girls in the new Academy in January 1903!

When complimented on her uncanny ability to build, Mother Theresa graciously acknowledged that the credit belonged to all the Sisters and added, “Let us thank God for the help that He, in His love, has given to us and enabled us to build.”

And, now, in the 21st century, God, in His love, has given us much and has enabled us to build: steel-girded buildings, sinewy-muscled student athletes, spiritually tough prayer warriors, service-oriented stewards!

I am awed! I am grateful! I know we are beyond blessed!

At Maryville, we often say “Your family is our family.” It’s true for our residents as well as for the patients who are transitioning from hospital to home and stay only a short time. We share laughter, of course, and also a tear or two as we grieve together when one of our own passes.

This last year marked the 50th anniversary of operation for Maryville Nursing Home. The evolution through those decades took us from a nursing home to today, when we now also care for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in Maryville Memory Care, and provide skilled rehabilitation and medical services for patients who must rebuild their strength before returning to an independent life. We expanded into these service areas because the need for them grows each year and because they are a natural extension of the care that we do so well.

A recent note from a resident’s family member helps illustrate the important role that your support of Maryville makes possible. The author of the note was most impressed with Maryville’s staff. “They give you the feeling that it is a privilege to take care of the residents. When I spoke with Mom, there was a cheerfulness that I hadn’t heard her voice for a long time.”

Thank you to all who continue to support our signature “service with love” care model.

With gratitude,

Kathleen ParryPresident, Maryville

“Excellence in everything. Opportunity for everyone.” The 2013-14 school year was one for the record books at Valley Catholic. Here are just a few of the highlights from an amazing year.

In September, we welcomed 1050 students (pre-K – 12th grade) — more than ever before with an incoming freshman class that included more boys than girls for the first time in school history.

We deployed carts of iPads throughout the campus and also announced a pilot 1-to-1 iPad program with our eighth graders for the 2014-15 school year. VCMS teacher Herb Lommen led the charge locally to teach “Hands-only CPR.” And, for the third consecutive year, Valley Catholic High School earned the prestigious Oregonian Cup award for 3A schools, based on excellence in academics, activities, athletics, and sportsmanship.

In April, the VCS School Board won the NCEA Outstanding Board award and accepted the honor at the annual NCEA convention in Pittsburgh. May commenced the renovation of our athletic facilities including a new turf field, bleachers, and field house. The project was completed over the summer, with a dedication on Sept. 5, 2014.

In June, we celebrated the nearly 100% of the graduating class of VCHS 2014 being accepted to four year colleges and universities. They will attend Duke, the Air Force Academy, Cornell, Santa Clara, Gonzaga and many other fine higher education institutions this fall.

You too, are part of our success every year. Your gifts impact our faculty and staff, our facilities, and in turn, influence the experiences of every student every day. Your generosity impacts Valley Catholic’s future as we strive for excellence in everything and opportunity for everyone.

Sincerely,

bob WeberPresident, Valley Catholic School
