In 1958 the young Sabah Abi-Hanna completed a summer internship with the Public Works Department in Kuwait while studying architecture at the American University of Beirut. He returned after graduation and quickly set up his own practice in 1961, the same year Kuwait gained its independence. Amid Kuwait’s rapid urbanisation, his practice and reputation flourished. With technical and aesthetic innovations he made an early mark on the burgeoning cityscape of Kuwait. Along with Salem Al-Marzouk, a civil engineer and reforming politician, Sabah formed a powerful new partnership based on a shared commitment to quality and ethics and the firm won many major government projects.

Renowned urban planner Charles Bosel joined in 1977 and ensured that SSH also played a key role in the master planning of Kuwait. Hopes were shattered by the 1990 Iraqi invasion.

SSH offices were ransacked, projects were halted and staff were scattered all around the globe. But the SSH spirit prevailed. Following liberation, even as the burning oil wells blacken the sky, the partners and a core team of staff regrouped, remobilised and renegotiated major contracts.

Ali Al-Abdullah joined SSH in 1993 with his broad public sector and management expertise and a powerful quartet guided SSH towards the millennium. New talent enabled the company to stay on the leading edge of technology and design. In 2013 a new board of directors was appointed to breathe energy and inspiration into SSH while retaining the established core company values.

The Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al Sabah causeway is one of the largest infrastructure projects to be constructed in the GCC region with an estimated construction value of approximately USD 3.5B. The project owner is Kuwait Ministry of Public Works (MPW). The causeway project provides new strategic highway routes to facilitate planned development to the north of Kuwait and comprises two discrete elements:

• Main link across Kuwait Bay linking the Shuwaikh Port area on the south side of the bay to the Subiyah New Town area to the north. The total length of the

main causeway is 36 km of which 27 km is the marine bridge structure.

• Doha Link which crosses the south of Kuwait Bay linking Shuwaikh Port with the Doha motorway. The Doha Link is 13 km in length and is predominantly a marine bridge structure.

Construction procurement is on a design and build basis. Dar Al-Handasah, supported by SSH as their local consultant, has been appointed by MPW to undertake a review of the contractor’s design and site supervision services.

The Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah (SJAS) Highway Upgrade project aims to reduce traffic congestion and delays during peak hours by upgrading the current 10km of highway to a motorway standard. This responds to the rapid growth in the Kingdom’s population from 1.4 million to an estimated 2.4 million residents by 2030. SJAS forms part of the strategic North-South link, connecting Manama, Sitra Industrial Area, Alba Plant and the Southern Governorate. It will also form part of the Future International Transportation Corridor with the proposed Bahrain-Qatar Causeway.

SSH as leading consultant and in partnership with Hyder Consulting, are undertaking the engineering consultancy services for the design of the road and bridges as part of the widening and upgrading of the SJAS Highway by the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning.

The Mirqab Approach Roads Project forms an integral part of the Kuwait motorway and expressway system of some 340 km which was implemented by the Ministry of Public Works.

The project links the ends of two major north/ south radial motorways to the Kuwait Inner Ring Motorway. Atkins was commissioned by the Ministry of Public Works to review the preliminary design, develop the final design, prepare tender and contract documentation, and to supervise the construction. SSH were appointed as subconsultants by Atkins.

The design work included 5.5 km of dual two and three lane motorways together with collector-distributor roads, ramps, and minor road junctions. Other features included two grade-separated interchanges, three pedestrian footbridges, reinforced concrete pedestrian subways, along with positive drainage systems and highway lighting systems. Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) awarded SSH the contract to perform consultancy services for its marine facilities upgrade. The USD 450M project was logistically challenging and consisted of the construction of a breakwater and harbour, demolition, change of use, additional buildings for stores, workshops and worker amenity buildings and a dry dock with oil separators.

SSH undertook all aspects of the infrastructure design including roads, storm water, sanitary engineering, street lighting and telecommunication networks. One of the main challenges was to ensure the harbour remained open at all times. SSH also managed the ever-changing nature of the brief to accommodate change and variation throughout the commission.

SSH strategically partnered with a number of international consultants to ensure the project met the client’s aspirations.
