Dobro Nam Došli!
Memorial Day Weekend 2012Sunday of the Holy Fathers
Dear Members of the Serbian Singing Federation and Beloved Faithful of God’s Church,
I am most delighted to welcome you all on behalf of St. George Eucharistic Community to our God-protected and finest city in America, San Diego.
The Serbian Singing Federation has been a uniting ministry of the Church on this continent for over eighty years by providing liturgical music, fellowship and beautification of the services. The music comes from God and the Kingdom of Heaven.
While today there are many forms of music, some even without melody, harmony, or rhythm, the Orthodox Church music continues to inspire, console, and uplift the Christian soul, leading it to the Kingdom of God.
Remembering the 100th anniversary of the Kumanovo battle, which was a great milestone in the history of the Serbian nation, this weekend we honor all those fallen asleep in the Lord defending their nations, but especially those from this major battle of the Balkan War. We entreat our Lord to grant them memory eternal in His Kingdom.
Congratulations on the 71st Serbian Singing Federation Festival! We are honored that you chose San Diego and St. George Parish for your annual celebration and fellowship. May your stay here be exhilarating and filled with a plethora of joyful memories.
In Christ’s ministry,
V. Rev. Bratislav Bratso Krsic

SERBIAN ORTHODOX BISHOP OF WESTERN AMERICA
May 9, 2012
Anniversaries are a great opportunity to gaze upon the path we have come, as well as the joys and blessings of the past. The Serbian Singing Federation has adorned our Church communities musically for 81 years, highly contributing to the preservation of our priceless cultural heritage in North America and Canada.
In order to reawaken within the Orthodox a true sense of the Eucharistic offering as something authentic, genuine and truthful—a chaste fruit of a community experiencing Resurrection—liturgical “dramaturgy” must again become an iconic representation of the Kingdom. In order to achieve this iconic ideal, the members of the Church must be heedful of the correct understanding of the liturgical “dramaturgy” and aesthetic expressions embellishing our worship: Melody— an echoing of the paradisial doxology beyond every sentimental euphoria; Iconography—an imaging of the unified landscape of Jerusalem that is above; Hymnographic versification—a freedom from rationalistic submission in experiencing Parousia; Lighting—an absence of artificial light-effects; Reading and Chanting—freedom from didactic expediency and enthusiastic exhilaration; Sermon—logos deprived of rhetorical excursus into non-ecclesial thematics, etc.
Our liturgical Typicon does not aim to captivate the individual with psychological appeals or to emotionally subordinate it, but rather our Typicon aims to include man into a liberated space-time where he or she will acquire freedom from all individualistic priorities and become acquainted with the incarnate Logos through communion with the Spirit and in personal freedom and love.
With archpastoral blessing,
Bishop Maxim of Western American Diocese

The entire St. George Choir extends its warmest welcome to all of the Choirs participating in the 71st SSF Festival and to all of our guests. Dobro nam došli! It is really a great honor for our Choir to be chosen to host this year’s Festival.
This Festival is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Kumanovo where the Serbian Army soundly defeated the Ottoman Turks and thus avenged Kosovo. Hence, the Serbian battle cry: Za Kosovo, Kumanovo!
After this glorious Serbian victory, the Ottoman Turks were forced to retreat from Southern Serbia and Kosovo and Metohija, and afterwards from the entire Balkans.
My grandfather, two of my great uncles and my father fought in this battle. At that time, my father was a nineteen-year-old military cadet and that entire class of the Serbian Military
Academy, which included Draža Mihajlović, volunteered after the First Balkan War of 1912 broke out. Liberation of all of the Serbian lands from foreign occupation was foremost on the minds of these young men, as the old Serbian song says: “Ja sam momče plemenitog roda, na srcu mi pravda i sloboda.” And that generation did it, first by the brilliant victory at Kumanovo
after which the southern Serbian lands were liberated from the Ottoman Turkish rule, followed by the victories in World War I after which the remaining Serbian lands were liberated from the Austro-Hungarian rule.
Remembering these valiant Serbian soldiers who gave everything for that noble cause of “Za Srbiju i slobodu i za dični narod svoj” (as another old Serbian song says), we can proudly exclaim “Vostani Serbije!” the immortal words of Dositej Obradović that became the first Serbian National Anthem and which will be performed by the SSF Mass Junior Chorus at this Festival.

Historical Background of SSS St. George, San Diego
The Serbian Singing Society St. George, San Diego, was founded on July 25, 1952 shortly after the founding of the parish. Its membership and repertoire have grown steadily under a succession of directors: Ruby Vuich, Smilja Pehar, Protinica Mirjana Trbuhovich, Irene Turiansky Weston, Daniela Janich, Yovanka Trbuhovich, Rada Jandrich Neal, Pamela Naughton, and Kathryn Thickstun. It is interesting that all of the choir directors have been ladies which most likely accounts for the choir’s growth. This is exemplified by the recent award of a Gramata by our Bishop Maxim to our Choir Director Kate Thickstun for her dedicated work for the Choir and Church.
The choir was inducted into the SSF in 1974, sponsored by the Stevan Hristich Serbian Choir of Phoenix, Arizona. Paul Bielich, the SSF Executive Secretary, presided over the induction ceremony. The choir has performed in Alhambra, San Gabriel, Jackson, and Fresno, California, as well as in Phoenix, Arizona, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Chicago, Illinois, Omaha, Nebraska, and Windsor, Canada. In 1993, the SSS St. Georgewas the Honored Church Choir at the SSF Annual Festival in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1995 the choir participated in the SSF Annual Festival in Alhambra, California, and it participated in the SSF 75th Anniversary Festival in Detroit. The SSS St. George has also hosted several choirs, including the Phoenix, Alhambra, Sloboda, Schererville, andAliquippa choirs. The choir counts itself fortunate to have had music composed and arranged for us by Mickey Jovich and Vladimir Simic, among others. Truly a church choir, the group believes its most important contribution is responding in the liturgy. The SSS St. George has also participated in civic events such as the US Bicentennial where it represented all of the Eastern Orthodox at the main celebration in the San Diego Civic Center, and the choir has sung Serbian Christmas songs at the Christmas at Prado, now renamed with the politically correct “December Lights”. Four weeks ago the Choir hosted the St. Petersburg (Russia) choral ensemble, as it has been doing for the last 12 years. The choir is very much honored to be able to host the 71st SSF Festival.

SSF is on Facebook!
Are you a part of the social networking phe-nomenon called Facebook? Almost a billion people around the world are!
Yes, you can find people, businesses, schools, churches, and much more by searching Facebook. And it is free (sup-ported by advertising).
Since July 2011, even the Serbian Singing Federation has a Facebook page where you can find all the very latest news, announce-ments, pictures, comments, and links to related topics.
If you have a computer or access to one and you aren’t already one of the billions, ask someone to help you set up a Facebook account with the proper security settings. It’s not difficult.
Then all you have to do is search for Serbian Singing Federation and you will find us. If you click the Like link, you will receive information of posts and updates. You can even make a post yourself.
You can access the SSF quarterly newsletter Hi-Notes, the SSF website, and other pages that may be of interest to you right from the SSF Facebook page. And after this Festival, you will be able to view this commemorative book online from the SSF page, and we are hoping many of you will post pictures, videos, and comments from the Festival to share with our “SSF community.”
If you have any questions about the SSF Facebook page, check with the SSF leadership who are “Page Owners” (shown at the right).
St George Church has its own page as does the MORAVA Folklore Ensemble and, of course, many, many of your friends, relatives, and fellow SSFers.
This is a great way to quickly share information, and you can have a lot of fun doing it.
Wishing the SSF a most successful Festival. Celebrating my 50th year as a member of
SSS Ravanica Choir, Detroit, MI. Tons of great "Memories"....

Zebrnjak monument was erected to honor Serbian soldiers who fellduring the Battle of Kumanovo (1912) for the 25th anniversary of thebattle. The monument was designed by Belgrade architect MomirKorunovic and built at the site of the battlefield in Vardar Banovina ofthe Kingdom of Yugoslavia, now Macedonia. Serbian military forcesof about 90,000 were commanded by the Serbian Royal Prince Alex-ander who later became King of Yugoslavia. The bottom of the monu-ment is a mausoleum that holds the remains of 678 Serbian soldiers. With this victory, the Serbian army determined the outcome of theFirst Balkan War, liberating Kosovo from the Ottoman Empire. Themonument was destroyed by Bulgarian invaders during the SecondWorld War and is currently being restored for the 100th anniversarycelebration in October.
