PRESIDENTS REPORT

Hello members, spring is here and is a busy time for bees.

Ted Cottle, Ian Beckwith, Mark Collier and I, ran an information display at Bunnings Frankston on the 21st of September for their Spring Community Day. We had a single frame with bees on show as well as a number of brochures that were available to interested passers by.

At least 5 families expressed interest in attending our September meeting and I extend a warm welcome to you all.

James Warner, Ted Cottle and I helped run an Introduction to Beekeeping course at Monterey Secondary College on Sunday the 22nd of September. Thanks to all that attended & hope you enjoyed yourselves.

This Wednesday meeting we have Dr Natalie Doran-Browne and Shane from Bee Removals, speaking on Relocation and Cutouts which I believe we will nd very interesting.

Please check all the up and coming events.

The club will be represented this Tuesday 24th of September at Dromana men’s shed and on Saturday the 28th of September at Baxter village from 10am. Everyone is welcome to be part of it and please put your hand up.

The club had a successful BBQ on Sunday the 8th of September, and even though the sky threatened to open up and pour, we had approx 50 club members turn up, grab a free sausage and a drink. A BIG thank you to Corrie

Williams and Alan Opie along with a few other members who jumped in to help make the bbq day a great success.

Mark Collier and I, had to make a quick departure during the BBQ and visit the Mayor’s Family Picnic in order to collect our $500.00 grant from Frankston City Council. The money will be used to help the club purchase two shipping containers to situate on site at Monterey SC.

Mark Collier and Ted Cottle have written and submitted a proposal to the school’s council seeking permission to site two shipping containers on the school’s property and also place a CCTV camera in the club apiary.

Looking forward to seeing you all Wednesday

Spring 2019 by Keith Edwards

As it is now the Spring growing season, I have recently

put bags and bags of fertilisers out over my garden

beds in preparation for the new plantings of perennials I

have on order and for some recently picked up and

planted. I have added soil health products of

Seamungus and Sudden Impact for Roses by Neutrog

and, of course, my old favourites , BioChar and

Rockdust. This, with the addition of a 75mm cover of a

10mm ne pinebark to all of the garden beds as a

mulch, will ensure that the investment I am putting into

plants will give me an assured return in how my garden

looks and, more importantly, food for the bees.

My garden, and surrounding properties, is displaying an

abundance of owering fruit and ornamentals that are

covered with bees, some walking over the stamens

collecting pollen, others intent on gathering nectar, as

the warmer weather allows more and more bees out to

forage. Once the owers of the fruit trees and

ornamentals have been pollinated, the bees will in turn

be looking for other options of owering trees and

shrubs, as the spring ush ends.

In order to see what is available for bees in the native

plant range for early spring and to see what they are

drawn to in numbers, I took a trip to the Australian

Native Gardens at Cranbourne, and some of the

owering plants amazed me. Australian native plant

owers have evolved to attract native bees, birds,

beetles and marsupials, suited to their natural

environment, so it was interesting to see plants from the

various states in full ower and to see which plants

attracted our introduced bees in numbers. The absolute

standout was a Grevillea from Western Australia, called

the Tangled Grevillea, or Grevillea exuosa, amassed

with owers like a wattle but, upon a closer look, you

could see the masses of ‘spider like’ orets of the

grevillea. This plant was approximately 2.00 metres tall

and 1.50 metres wide with brilliant yellow ower balls

that were covered with bees collecting masses of pollen

and nectar and a perfume not generally associated with

native plants. Other stand out natives in ower were the

red brushed Calothamnus quadridus, or One Sided

Bottlebrush, also a native from W.A. attracting bees,

hybrid varieties of grevillea such as ‘Peaches and

Cream’, Thomasia species, Boronia, and massed

owers from the ‘Wax ower’ in full bloom, as well as the

red owering wattle, Grevillea leprosa, variety Scarlet

Blaze’. While there were many other owering plants

within the gardens, the above species were the bee

magnets, the standout still the Acacia exuosa.

These gardens have an enormous amount of plants in

ower at the moment, so it is really worthwhile making

the trip out, pay a little extra for a bus tour and then

spend time walking the paths through this amazing

natural wonderland.

I love to get away from our cold weather in Melbourne at

this time of year, and I just had a 2 week trip to

Queensland - but had to made sure that I was home for

our club meeting on 28th August!

During my stay (Everton Hills in Brisbane) I discovered

that the local bee club was Northside Beekeepers Club,

and they were just up the road from where I was staying.

I checked them out on Facebook and discovered their

monthly meetings are on the third Wednesday of the

month - same day as ours, so I couldn’t go to their

August meeting. However they said that they have a

regular weekly Saturday get together and I was invited to

attend. What a great time I had meeting 20 or so keen

beekeepers milling around 100 bee hives! A fantastic

experience!

“I would like to say a big thank you to Michael

(Northside’s President ) and John (Vice President - you

are doing a fantastic job there on Saturdays, John) for

organizing for me to attend the Saturday meeting, and a

big Hi! to all the members I met. Especially Daisy (the

lady beekeeper I said you reminded me of was Hilary

Kearney from Girl Next Door Honey, who visited our

Victoria Bee Conference recently from USA. Check her

out on Google, Daisy!) Also To Mick, and Eveline and a

big thanks to Steve for dropping me back home to

Everton Hills. It was a great day and I would like to offer

the invitation to any members of Northside coming down

to Victoria, to ring me and attend whatever we have

going on. It would be great to stay in touch, and I will

denitely connect with you again when next I come to

Brisbane.”

We have this terric venue at the school for our meetings

and hives (thanks to Allan Evans), but I straight away put

the thought into my "wouldn't it be wonderful if” book,

seeing a similar meeting place for our members to be

able to enjoy a regular hands-on hive experience here in

Victoria.

On my return I discovered that my dream is possibly

already in the melting pot for us. We hope to be able to

tell you about it very soon. Fantastic, I can't wait to get

involved! Watch this space!

In the meantime, if anyone is a computer nut like I am -

and is good at emails, Facebook, etc. give me a call.

You could connect us with Northside Bee Club and any

others on behalf of SSB. I think it would be great to

have "sister/brother" clubs around the country, don’t

you? Forget about, just Australia, for that matter what is

wrong with - around the world? Nikol lives in Poland (she

visited us with Ben Moore our August speaker) and I am

sure she would love to stay connected to us when she

goes home!

This weekly get-together at the Northside Beekeepers

Club is at Geebung. My husband, Graeme, a dinki-di

Aussie (I’m a Pom) said that must be where the poem

“The Geebung Polo Club” by Banjo Paterson comes

from! Here’s the link to it if you are interested :
