MY VISIT TO BLOEMFONTEIN pectable but poor Africanfamil)'. The only lights intheir house were candles.A poor sort of a lavatoryWas there with no seweragesystem. 'The night soil, Iwas tofd, was cleared oncein two or three days. Therewas no water laid in thehouse: There were communal taps here and therefrom where water hadto be fetched. I had comeafter a very long and tiresome journey and felt verydirty with all the coal dustfrom the C+Jlgine cominginto our compartment. Icould not possibly havebeen able to sleep l.om·fortabl}' without a bath. IWas intcnt lipan havingit some how or other. SoI .examined all the nooksand corner's of their backyard. M)1 hosts wereof course anxious andwilling to give me all thecomforts it was possiblefor them to give. So theyfetched a link tub andplaced it in their wood andcoal room and got a bucketfull of water from thecommunal tap. It wasneilrly midnight, since oum)' arrival I W.iS taken directto the placc where the canIcrell~e was sitting. Thevery kind :lnd generalIShosts placed at my disposaltheir li\'ing' room, which wastheir best rOOl11, and pro.\'idcd me with a very COO1

fortable and clean bed: . I had a night's rest as good as Icou d ha\'e ~xpected to ha,'ein the lInest hate!' I insist.ed on ~hc\ring the food the)'ale and so it was a 'plate ofme.t1iemeal porridge and

asked. "'Vhat is all thisfor?'~ I asked surprisingly "Did you not knowthat )'Oll bad no rightto use this bridge?" he s:lid."Is that so?" I queried witha shock. "I must admit Iwas not aware of the factbut now that I am I shallcertainly do it again." ThePolice officer said he wasnot concerned, about thatand be took my name andmy permanent home address I shall be awaiting asummons as I am still await

I found that in Uloemfontein it was e,p,sy to commit ,:,breacnoftheof<lpartheidlawswithout coming into conflictwith the European public.I\ly self-respect was deeplywounded to finc..l. that ant:may not e\'en use a publicthoroughfare, because of thecolour of one's skin. It wasa thing 1 could not tulerateand though I h:ld toldthe Press that 1 didnot propose to commit abreach of any apanheidlaws then:, I found th:lt Iwould be obliged to do soin the course of my mo\·e·menls, if I wished to mainl;'lin 111)' scnse orself.rC'specl.

From the station I wastaken in a taxi to the Nativelocation, where the Conference was sitting-. Thc wh-oleplace was in darkness. Thel\lllllicipality evidently didnot not dtem it necessary to

provide the people living inthe location withstreetlights.

December 4, in order tobe present at the conferenceof the African NationalCongr~ss, which was meeting there on the 15th. Itried to. have m)' seal booked four days earlier. Icouldn't get a booking as Iwas told that all scats werefully bookcd. I made several fruitless efforts till theJ3th. The excuse givenwas either that there wasnl) scat vacant or m)' permit to go to the OrangeFree State was asked for, which of course I did nothave. So in the end I gota third class ticket whichdoes not require any 'book.ing. I boarded the 'train atDurban at 8 p.m. on the·14th. The third class coa·ches were cmwded. I man·aged to sit huddled up in acorner. On enquiring Ifound that there was quitea lot. of room in the firstand second class compartments. So I paid excessand got my ticket convertedto second class.

o'clock tea and refreshmentsand 4 o'clock tca and refreshments which arc the essential items of all our con·ferences were conspicuousby their abscnce, whichproved that this was reallyand truly a conference ofthe poor people.

During the day I lookedround the location. Jlist onthe outskirts of the locationwere fa,ctorics already inexistence for some time andothers in the course of erec·'tion. In -the location they.had their church, their communal halls, their Y.M,C.A.But their living conditionswere dreadful. Civic amenities and other municipalserviccs were conSpicuOU9by their absence. Roadswere \Jikc country roads. One just wondered whattheir condition would be inraillY season with no drains. At night one had to havea torch, which is naturallyan expensive luxury forthese poor people, or tofeel onc's way.

Those who resided in thelocation, I was told, were

. given a plot of ground onwhich they erected theirown house .and paid theI\Iullicipality lOS. rent permonth and, of course, inaddition every adult malewas liable to pay £ I polltax annually. vVith all thatit should of course be remembered that there is nosecurity of tenure whatso·ever for the~e people. ~ho

could be shifted from theirpr~sent place whenever andwherever it may please theauthorities. \Vhcn one compared these conditions withthe beautiful homes of the

Europeans. provided withall . the municipal servicesilnd all the civic <lmeniticsthey could desire one wondered how it was pol>siblefor the Europeans to liveand enjoy all the comfortsof life with any semblanceof a dear conscience. Itseemed as though theyhad ;10 conscience at all.And yet they professedto be true Christians. Godwas certainly not in theirhomes. He was in thehomes of these poor neglected, despised and exploited human beings. Onlythat in their ignorance thesepeople did not feel Hispresence and there wasnobody to give them hopeand encouragement and toshow them the way to seeand to feel His presence.

It gave me a vivid idea ofwhat the Nationalist Government's conception ofApartheid was. They saythe non· Europeans must beallowed to live and to develop on their own lines, thatthey must, be given complete freedom in their ownareas, thatthey must conducttheir own affairs. Yes. indeed, and so they have their mayorand advisory board, but withwhat powers heaven aloneknows. T.hey did not seemto enjoy any powers. Tostew in their own juice andto remain poverty stricken, sothat the factories standingjust in their door front couldbe supplied wich cheaplabour was ,their inev"itablelot:

These people may onlytrade within the location,They dare not even be ~cen

hawldng in town. Some ofthem work in Europeanhotels and as domestic ser.v;lnts having tl) be satisfiedwith any wages they get.The standard of wages isbased on the colour' of theirskin, 'not on their efficie~cy.\Vhere there was competi.tion between the Europeanand the nOI1-Europ~an, there

the laws were, of course,so made that the non-European whether or not he wasefficient for the work he wassupposed to do had to be paidthe same as the White'man.so that .the employer wasobliged to take the moreefficient \Vhite man.

How long do the Whiterulf.'rs of this country expectthese people to toleratesuch conditions? And ontop of it all, since the Government has no respect forthese people how could oneblame the Government officials in all departments andthe unthinking and uncultured \Vhite public to treatthem with any respect? Sothese poor people are kickedfrom pillar to post by every-.one.

Toquotejustone instance,I sent a young Africanstudent 01 Fort Hare College. who was living in thesame home where I wa:;accommodated. to the lailway station to book my seatrt_nd to convert my tbirdclass tickt::t to a - second

class one. When he firstwent he waS' tord to comelater. When he went thesecond time he was told bythe man in charge thathis time was up andwas jus t go 0 j IJ g offduty. The next one incharge told him to comelater. Then the third timehe went to convert theticket an hour or so beforethe train was due to leave. The per~on in charge refusedto convert the - ticket forreasons best known to bim.self. I bad to have the ticket'conv~fted on the train.

I had stated .above that 1would be obligp.d to commila breach of the apartheidlaws in the course of mymovements. Accordingly ai I,vas going ~o catch mytrain I intentionally walkedin through the entrancemeant for Europeans only, which of course was the mainentrance, and went over thebridge with railway officialsgazing at me. Thus endedmy visit to Bloemfontein. Ihope next week to deal withthe conference.

What is indeedhappening is that botb sides areusing them very largely for pro·pagand:! purposes. same time, by reflex action, thenose gets itchy too; so the patientrubs or scratches at the nose andtber~by transfers the egg3 to it.When the eggs reach mucousmembrane, they hatch out andso a new generation DC threadworms starts.

Bedding and nigbt.cloihes canalso help to cause infestationsince the eggs get brushed on tothem :lnd can then be tr3nsCerredto the mouth or nose. Bu~ tbeeggs are viable, that is, alive and:lble to hatch out, for a period ofonly 9 days. This makes infestation very mucb easier in crowdedhomes and institutions, but i~

also affords a means of combat·ting this pest. As tbe femalelives only about. the same lengthof time too. tbese facts have beenused in American hospital, fortrealing patients. Sufferer! arecarefully cleaosed every night andmorning and change ioto perfectly clean clothes each time. Aperfectly clean bed with freshbed·clothes is also used everynight. This procedure is followedcarefully for about 2 weeks. Atthe same time the ha..nds ale encased :and tied so that tbere canbe DO scratching and transferenceof eggs from :lntJ:I to nose ormouth. H reinfestation can beprevented. the worms die out.But the most scrupulous' care isnecessary to prevent ,uch reinfestation, and ordinarily tbisregimen is impossible.

The sound and semible way totackle tbe ploblem is to thangethe conditioDJ in wbicb the wormsflourish. These conditions 3re,essentially. a state of tbe bowelwhere there is much mucus andwhete the products of a dietof sugar :lnd starches gives themplenty of food .uited to tbeirpeculiu n3tures. Tn other words, where a child (or 3dult) eats muchsugar. sweets, cakes, biscuits, white bread, rOli, rice :lod s'D on,there will be ideal conditions (orthese worms to live :lDd breed.

Another strong faclor is wh:ltthe Homoeopaths call a scrofulous or cancerous l:Iint in theconstitution. To tbem tbe presence of thread·worms is 'justplain evidence of such 3, tain!,' and

THREADWORM infeMation ismuch commoner than most

people suspect. A few years ago,a survey in the United Slatesrevuled that a surprisingly highpercelltage of grownups sufferfrom this so-called cbildish com·plaint. Most of them neversuspect the fact.

Much infestation orIginatesfrom eating fruit that has beenbandIed by people suffering from

• threadworms, or pin-worms astbey are sometimes called. Ao·other name is seat-worms, fromtbe peculiar ch3racleristic. to beexplained hereunder. that theyappe>lr arcund the anus 3t certaintimes. The eggs get oc. thefingers of sufferns, or under theirfio6er-nails. 3nd thus get tr30S'ferred ta. the fruit they handle. When this fruit is eatcn after·wards by someone else, the eggsare introduced to a new body.Tbis is just one more reason whyour food should be handledhygienically from grower ormanufacturer right down the lineto the consumer. And for this

... reason. too, it is always wise tow:llb any fruit. such as apples, grapes. e.\. before it is eaten. One C3nno' b~ too particularabout ore's food

Where threadworm infestationis'suspected, the matter cao oftenbe confirmed by an inspection ofthe :lnus about an hour after thepatient has gSlOe to sleep. Theparent of such a child should'iheecarefully examine around the anusof the child. II lhere is infesta.tion, there will almost certainlybe found some tiny worms, likeshort pieces of white thread abouthalf :In :nch long. There may beonly one or two, or there m:ay beso many that the anus will be,surrounded with 01 wbite coltonwool like mass.

These are tbe female thread·worms which bave come out toby their eggs. They travel dqwothe large bowel. through therectum and out of tbe anus, tolay their eggs 00 the surroundingskin. When these are laid, theftmale worms return through tbeanus ba~k into the bowel. But,when they by rheir eggs, tbeybite the soft and delic3te skinaround the anus. thereby causingan intolerable itching. BEGUM ABDULLAH

BEGUM AKBAR JEHANMARIAM ABDULLAH i9

a leader in her own right and notmerely because she is married toKashmir's Prime Minister, SheikhMohammed Abdullah.

In 1946 Sheikh Abdullah andother leaders of the popularmovement in Kashmir, when trying 10 wrest democratic power, were thrown into prison. Theresponsibility fell on the shouldersof the Begum to carryon thestruggle a.nd she performed theusk most creditably. It wasg'ven to her to keep the torch ofPeople's movement alight at amoment when it had becomeleaderless.

Begum Abdullah saved themovement from the machinationsof its enemies. She held aloftthE banner of communal peaceand amity in Kashmir in thetroubled days of 1947 when largeparts of the Indian sub conlinentwere engulfed in communalfren~y.

Mahatma Gandhi paid a warmtribute to the work of the Begumin the course of one of his postprayer speeches. In the preserv3tion of communal amity inKashmir he saw "the only ray ofhope in surrounding darkness."

Unassuming, quiet and dignified, Begum Abdullah donned the

m:antle of leadtrship and touredthe rntire Stale of Jammu andKashmir with a bacd of workersboth men and women. Sheattracted large crowds of Hindus,Sikhs and Muslims to -listen toher speeches. Peace Committeeswere set up in all parts of theSlate under her guidance.

The Begum was borm in 1916.In spite of her commitments ,sa busy house-wife-:Jhe is themother of five children-she haskept up her keen interest inworld ~ffairs and current events. She has been fire:! with the urgeof freedom :lOd lofly idealismsince her youth.

During the tribal raids onKashmir Begum Abdullah playeda remarkable role successfully", organi~ing Kashmlri women for thedefEnce of the country. Sheformed tbe Kashmir Women'sSelf defence Corps. Wbile menfought on the fronts these womenvolunteers took care of tbe helpless thousands who bad been outof their hearths and homes. TheWomen's Defence Corps attendedto the sick and the woundednursed children and took chargEor the camps. In the face ofenemy bullets, the women under

the le:adership of Begum Abdullahcarried on the work undaunted.

In early 1948 when the Jainmuand K:asbmir ~ed Cross Societywas reorganised, Begum Abdulbhwas elected its president. TheSociety performed very valu:ablework which was highly commended by vi!iting high officials of theInterralional Red Cross. .

Begum Abdullah's Socia-politic3l views are very progressive andin consonance with those bf heriIIuscrious husband. To quoteher own words: "The treatmentmeted out to our neglected peoplealways roused a strong desire inmy mind to come out and fightfor their upliftmeot. But as awoman I had my own Iimit:ationsand I would do nothing beyondsympalhising with them and pitying my own helplessness." Shemarried the Sheikh in 1933 andto quote hu again, "We had tbesame feelings in .almost all .aspectsof life around us. My mnri.agewith him g.aVE me courage andconfidence and seemed to Investmy life with a meaning an"d purpose:' Her charming personality, suave manners and sincerity havecontributed handsomely to BegumAbdullah's success.

21st Dilcember, 1951

Begum AbduUah is :II devoutchampion of women's rigbts andshe is infused witb a mission to"deliver the Kashmiri womenfrom social inequality and injustice:' She feels that a justand right pbce must be guaranteedto women- if they arc to pbytheir le~itjmate patt in a fne iUldhappy social order. BegumAbdullah is unce~l.Iingly workingtowards the realisation of thisend; she is by no m~DS an ..rmchair reformer.

Nature is bountiful in Kashmir;but centuries of exploitation havekEpt tbe people in poverty. TheHercule..n efforts directed underthE able guidance of patriots hketbe Begum during tbe b9t threeye:ars .. re bringing about socioeconomic changes which will impart real content to politicalfreedom.
