Brief Select an area of the Warehouse or Showroom complex and develop the construction technology for this area. Details of the footings, flooring, roofing, and envelope system should be included. An examination of an internationally recognized Architect as a reference is to be undertaken to assist in the development.

Design Inspiration – Louis Kahn’s Kimbell Art Museum 1967-72The Kimbell Art Museum by Louis Kahn is also a disciplined, coherent, and visually clear statement, but here the aesthetics derive from the more classically oriented sensiblity of its architect. It has an austere yet rich simplicity that comes from the repetition of a vaultlike form, given a dull sheen from its lead-covered exterior, and a beautifully articulated concrete structural frame with infill paneled walls of travertine. Its classic sense of timelessness is ennobled by a reverence for material and detail. Its interior form, bathed in a diffused natural light that enters the space via continuous interior suspended screen and reflected downward off the curve of the vault."

Paul Heyer. American Architecture: Ideas and Ideologies in the Late Twentieth Century. p278-279.

Portal FrameLouis Kahn is famous for his use of concrete in his buildings in keeping with this, i am incorporation a concrete portal frame into my design.

G-Frame Concrete Portal Frame The G-Frame is a precast concrete structural frame with a 7’7" roof beam pitch. Its unique "scarf joint" detail facilitates larger clear spans of up to 40 m. approx. The G-Frame is ideal for single and multiple bay frames, which can be designed as either fixed or pinned base.

Design • Roof beam pitch 7 degrees 7 minutes (i.e. 1 in 8) • Span Clear span capabilities are available up to 40m approx. • Bay width 6.0m is a recommended economic spacing of frames. • Eaves height 3.0 to 13.0m approx.

Model – Pad FootingReinforced concrete pad footing to support the pre-cast concrete column. Bars protrude from the Pad which connect the column to the footing, via a metal base plate cast into the column. A 300mm shim Is placed on the Pad and allows the columns position to be adjusted, grout is then filled around the shim.
