SRM QuickstartThe SolarWinds Orion Storage Resource Monitor (SRM) offers easy-to-use, real-time storage visibility into your multi-vendor NAS & SAN arrays. Easily set up alerts and reports to monitor performance and capacity trends in your storage environment.

If you have version 6.5 of SRM or higher, use the SolarWinds Orion Installer to install or upgrade one or more Orion Platform products simultaneously.

You can download an evaluation copy of SRM from www.solarwinds.com or you can download a licensed copy from the SolarWinds Customer Portal.

Please see the following SolarWinds documents for information on adding arrays, monitoring your storage environment and administering SRM:

l SolarWinds SRM Getting Started Guide  l SolarWinds SRM Administrator Guide

page 4

Page 5: SRM Legacy Installation Guide - SolarWinds · PDF fileIf you have version 6.5 of SRM or higher, use the SolarWinds Orion Installer to install or upgrade one or more Orion Platform

Plan your production deploymentBefore you install SolarWinds SRM in a production environment, size your environment to ensure that the system has enough capability to meet your monitoring needs.

If you are installing an evaluation copy of SRM, see Install an evaluation copy of SolarWinds SRM.

Server sizing depends on:

l Number of monitored storage objects: an object can be a storage array, storage pool, LUN, volume, Vserver, or file share

l Polling frequency: SolarWinds SRM regularly polls devices to collect data and determine status. If you decide to collect performance statistics more often than the default 15 minutes, system requirements increase

l Number of simultaneous users: Add 1 GB of RAM for every 25 simultaneous users

* If the server does not have IIS or .NET installed, the installation automatically installs and configures these components for you. If the server has Internet access, use the online version of the installation. If not, use the offline version.

** Each additional polling engine requires the same requirements as listed in the Windows Application Server (physical or virtual) column.

FIPS supportFederal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) defines security and interoperability standards for computers used by the U.S. Federal Government.

SRM is FIPS 140-2 compliant. For instructions, see Enable FIPS.

Virtual machine and application server requirementsOrion application server installations on VMware™ or Microsoft hosted virtual machines are supported. The virtual machine requirements are identical to the physical server requirements.

Deployment ChecklistBefore you install SolarWinds SRM, complete the pre-installation checklist below. This checklist helps you:

l Verify that system requirements are met, all required software is installed, and required roles and features are enabled.

l Gather the information required to complete the installation.

A dedicated virtual 1GBE NIC is required. Be advised that resource contention could occur in a virtual environment if you have not dedicated physical resources to your Orion Application server virtual machine.

Check for antivirus software.

Determine if any antivirus software is installed on the server or servers where you plan to install Orion. To ensure the installation goes smoothly, exclude the SolarWinds directory. For example, on Windows Server 2012 R2, exclude C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\.

Do not exclude executable files. SolarWinds assumes that C:\ is the default volume.

Check system requirements, and identify system resources on which you install the Orion application server and database.

Confirm that your installation environment meets the minimum system requirements.

Use the Local Administrator Account for installation. The Local Administrator Account is not the same as a domain account with local admin rights. A domain account is subject to your domain group policies.

Ensure you have the correct version of the installation. If your server has access to the Internet, use the online version of the installation. If the server does not have access to the Internet, use the offline version of the installation.

Obtain the SQL Server user name and password of a SQL Server database account with sysadmin rights. This may be your SA account. Contact your SQL Database Administrator for this information. Orion uses this account to create its database and to create a new user with read/write access and ownership over its own database.

If SolarWinds SRM is the first Orion Platform product that you are installing, ensure that you Prepare the Orion SQL Server database before you install SRM.

Determine if your license includes additional polling engines. If it does, refer to install an additional polling engine. Install the additional polling engine after installing SolarWinds SRM on the main polling engine.

Prepare the Orion SQL Server database for a SolarWinds SRM installationThe SolarWinds Orion database stores all monitoring data. Use these guidelines to configure the database before you install and configure SolarWinds SRM. If you need assistance installing the SQL Server database, refer to the guidelines provided by Microsoft.

o Ensure you install the Orion database and the Orion Server on the same domain.

o The selected SQL Server instance must support mixed-mode or SQL authentication with strong passwords. A strong password must meet at least three of the following four criteria:

l Contains at least one uppercase letter l Contains at least one lowercase letter l Contains at least one number l Contains at least one non-alphanumeric character, for example, #, %, or ^

o For a new database, the user account must be a member of the dbcreator server role. The sysadmin role and the security administrator (SA) user account are always members of dbcreator.

o For an existing database, the user account needs only to be in the db_owner database role for the existing database.

o For a new SQL account, the user account must be a member of the securityadmin server role. The sysadmin role and the security administrator user account are always members of securityadmin.

o Set the recovery model of the database to Simple. SolarWinds does not support other methods.

o Select the authentication method used by the SolarWinds Orion user to access the SolarWinds Orion database.

SolarWinds recommends using SQL Server Authentication to ensure the SolarWinds Orion server can always access the SolarWinds Orion database, even when hosted remotely on a separate server.

Install an evaluation copy of SolarWinds SRMThe SolarWinds SRM evaluation version is a full version of the product, functional for 30 days. After the evaluation period, you can easily convert your evaluation license to a production license by obtaining and applying a license key.

For evaluation installations only, you can install the Orion server and the Microsoft® SQL Server® database on the same machine. The installer automatically installs SQL Server 2014. You can use that database, or configure the server to use another MS SQL server database.

l Do not use MS SQL Server Express in a production deployment. l Do not install SolarWinds SRM on a domain controller or use the same database server as a

Research in Motion (RIM) Blackberry server.

Before you start installing SQL Express 2014 on the same computer as the Orion server, ensure .NET 3.5 is installed.

Can I install SRM 6.4 on a desktop operating system?

For evaluation installations only, installation on a desktop operating system is possible, but not supported. SolarWinds SRM is intended for use in a production environment that meets the SolarWinds SRM system requirements.

Exclude data directories from anti-virus scanningAnti-virus programs may lock files used by the SolarWinds Job Engine v2 service during scanning. This can cause the SolarWinds Job Engine v2 services to stop and restart, causing delayed polling and gaps in data for a poll cycle.

For the most up-to-date information and details of the files, directories and ports to be excluded, in SRM and all SolarWinds products, please see: Files and directories to exclude from antivirus scanning.

Apply your LicenseOnce the installation process has finished, you will be given the option to license SRM. If you are installing for the first time and decide not to license your product, it will run in evaluation mode for 30 days.

Beginning with SolarWinds Orion 2016.2, Orion Platform products such as SRM use the web-based License Manager. This replaces the previous stand-alone Windows License Manager. You should uninstall the stand-alone version.

With the web-based License Manager, you can manage licenses for Orion Platform products, Additional Polling Engines (APEs), Additional Web Servers (AWSs), and High Availability pools from a single Orion Web Console page.

The SRM Orion Module can be integrated to run with the SRM Profiler Module. When integrated, users can see the functionality of both the SRM Orion Module and SRM Profiler Module. For more information, see Key Licensing Scenarios when SRM Profiler and SRM are integrated in the SRM Administrator Guide.

 1. Click Settings > All Settings, scroll down, and click License Manager in the Details grouping. The License Manager screen is displayed.

If you licensed your product before you installed it, click Add/Upgrade License, enter the details, and complete the activation to see the license in the License Manager.

 2. Click Activate for Storage Resource Monitor. 3. Enter the activation key.
