Seminole County is one of 58 (out of 67) Florida counties that has an active Florida Master Gardener Program. Florida Master Gardeners (MG’s) are adult volunteers trained by Cooperative Extension Service personnel. After completion of an intense training program (12 to 14 weeks, 6 hours per day, one day per week with approximately 75 hours of intensive horticultural instruction), the volunteers become certified MG’s, ready to return 50 hours of volunteer service to their community through assistance with Extension home horticulture activities and projects.
Master Gardeners are the Extension’s in-house resource, that provides solutions to the challenges of Florida gardening. They share knowledge of best practices, scientifically proven solutions and advice on eco-friendly methods that are vital to the sustainability of Seminole County’s most precious resources.
If you are interested in becoming part of this exciting program, contact Seminole County Extension Service at 407-665-5550 or visit Seminole County Government on the Web at www.seminolecountyfl.gov.

LINDA PARKINSON, 971 BLACKWOOD AVENUE, ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, 32701
Linda’s garden is a true example of Florida friendly landscaping and incredible edibles. Nestled off a rural street in Altamonte Springs, this expansive yard immediately captures your eye. There is a three part trellis along the back fence with blooming confederate jasmine. In between the grassed area in the front, there are two large beds curving and winding their way across the yard that include an array of flowers and drought tolerant shrubs. The backyard holds another delight where she grows vegetables in raised beds and containers.

BETTY COLE, 990 ALBERTA STREET, LONGWOOD, 32750
With over an acre and a half of land, hidden off of dog track road, Betty’s property houses three butterfly gardens along with vegetable gardens and a large variety of native plants. Situated in the front yard is a bougainvillea, over twenty feet tall, which draws you immediately into her gate. Beautiful camellias are scattered in the front and along the side yards. Make sure you don’t miss the pineapple bed near the back of the side yard. This place is a haven for butterflies, especially Monarchs.

CAROLE HALLIDAY, 492 HARVEST OAK COURT, LAKE MARY, 32746
Hidden away in Carole’s backyard is a tropical paradise, a demonstration of what a gardener can do in a smaller space. Along a winding stone path, visitors will find a koi pond and a wooden bridge leading to different areas of her garden. Not only is her backyard a tropical display, she also has planted a butterfly and fairy garden. It is easy to forget you are in the quiet suburbs of Lake Mary when you walk around this garden.

PAM VALDES, 3309 ATHENA DRIVE, WINTER PARK, 32792
Pam’s well- planned, curb appealing front yard looks as though it could be a contestant for yard of the month in this quaint neighborhood of Eastbrook. Yet, when you take the narrow path on the side of the house and open the wooden gate, you discover a backyard that is a pollinating station like few you have ever seen. The back yard seemingly has an imaginary line where sun is found on one side and shade on the other, which allows for an interesting, eclectic assortment of plants, where butterflies are plentiful.

JIM SMALL,140 LAMORAK LANE, MAITLAND, 32852
Turning into Jim’s quiet neighborhood in Maitland is a treat all by itself. The trees are mature and provide plenty of shade for the many established lawns on either side of this street. While Jim’s front yard is lovely, it is his backyard that will take your breath away. Here you will find over 75 varieties of roses. As you enter under the side yard arbor, two massive beds line the walkway, but more roses are found in the back, an example of a traditional, well managed yard.

CHARLIE PEAK, 229 COBLE DRIVE, LONGWOOD, 32779
Not only does this yard reflect Florida friendly landscaping with a traditional, easy to grow yard, but Charlie has designed an innovative system using rain barrels to harvest rain water. He manages to use this system to fill his pool, spa, and water his lawn. This yard is an exemplary example of water conservatory principles in action.

ORI BORRIECI, 435 WILFORD AVENUE, LONGWOOD, 32750
Situated in the Rolling Hills area of Longwood, Ori’s property begins at the end of a long, narrow driveway where the house and much of her yard is hidden from the street. Yet, once you begin the walk up to the house, you immediately are surrounded by one of the most amazing native habitat selections in the area. Over fifty varieties are found in both sun and shaded areas. Along the back of her property, which runs along the golf course, is a long bed with a collection of wildflowers and pollinators.
