JAMIE POST

I'm going to talk about an impor-tant issue this month, it's one I'vementioned a number of times, andI promise to give you a break fromit after this. Our communities andour city as a whole are changing aswe move into the future and thelevel of government we interactwith every single day of our liveshas grown and evolved along withit. The efforts of volunteers suchas those in Edmonton's communi-ty league movement helped toshape Edmonton over thedecades, and as our lives havegrown more complex, our volun-teer ranks have declined while therole of civic government hasgrown. Our neighborhoods areundergoing social, environmental, and economic changes, in themidst of debate around policy and plans for residential densityand West LRT expansion, statutory land-use planning, andneighborhood renewal. Becauseof this, we need the involvementof community residents.

We have a Councillor to representus, city planners to work on land-use decisions and infrastructure, and community liaison workersfrom Community Services and theOffice of Great Neighborhoods, however, we are the ones who livehere. It is we who walk and drivethese streets, shop on Stony PlainRoad and support our local shop-ping centres. It is we who reportderelict and disorder properties andwho see illegal activity in our com-munities. We care, not becausewe’re paid too, or elected to, orassigned a portfolio to, but becausethis is our home. The impacts from the issues that affect ourcommunity, from land-use to theWest LRT are not “perceived” tous, they are lived.

Communities are diverse things, and having spent some time goingdoor-to-door during the election, Ican say that the view of issues andconcerns within a neighborhood, are far more complex and diversewhen viewed from ground level, rather than top-down. Some can bedealt with locally, through localevents and initiatives. Others, how-ever, are more complex, requiringdetailed work through city adminis-tration and council, civic policy andpublic hearings. As this happens, through a critical few years in our

road to the future, it's vital that ourvoices be heard. We won’t beheard if we take an apathetic ordetached view of the future. Ourlives are complex, and thedemands on our time extensive, however, the value of local volun-teers is still high, both in bringinglocal concerns to the forefront, andin holding our elected representa-tives and civic leaders accountablefor the decisions which will affectour future.

BYLAW BUZZ

KAILA TIPTON

It’s that time of the year againwhen we all are preparing for Edmonton’s longest season: winter.

With winter comes snow andice, so I would like to take this opportunity to remind all property owners that theCommunity Standards Bylawrequires you to clear the publicwalks around your propertydown to the pavement within48 hours of a snowfall.

Clean sidewalks promote physi-cal activity in our communities, but when there is snow and iceon sidewalks, it can be hazardous to anyone trying toget around. For example,

Canada Post recorded more than 1,500 slip and fall incidentsfor their workers throughoutCanada in 2007.

For some Edmontonians, partic-ularly seniors, moving snow canbe difficult, and sometimeseven dangerous. If you knowone of your neighbours has trouble clearing their sidewalk, you can volunteer to help byclearing it for them. Anyonewho needs help getting theirsidewalk cleared can call 311 formore information on how andwhere to get help.

From November 2009 to March31, 2010, in the Stony PlainRevitalization Area, there wereover 300 snow investigations, butonly 33 snow tickets were record-ed. So, a big thank you to the near-ly 90 per cent of you who clearedyour sidewalks after you receivedyour notice, and to everyone whogot out in the cold within 48 hours

of a snow fall to remove the snowand ice from around their homesand businesses.

I urge you to talk to, get help or help anyone in your community that hasn’t clearedtheir sidewalk before calling 311to complain. Great neighboursmake great neighbourhoods.

STONY PLAIN ROAD AND AREA UPDATE

For each of us, our personalhealth is our greatest asset.Without health, we are lesscapable of achieving ourdreams and goals. The founda-tion of good health is in foodand nutrition and we are creating a market that will offeran opportunity to make food awhole lot of fun – for every-one! nutrition can reduce the appear-ance of aging – imagine, nobotox or cosmetic surgery tolose years off your face. Weknow that proper nutrition canhelp build up the immune system. We know foods thatcan boost brain power. Our bodies have remarkable powersof self-repair and renewal; good food and nutrition kick-start the process and keepit HUMming along.

As with every good thing, theprocess takes time, planning, energy and a whole lot of committed people. Won’t it be fun to have a place whereyou can hang out and learnsome cool healthy cooking tipsand learn more about living a

healthier holistic lifestye? It’s all in theworks.

The HUM is beingdesigned for you. So anythoughts you have onthings you’d like to seethere are most wel-come. You can reach usby email at [email protected].

Hours of Operation: Monday to Friday from 7am to 4pm, Saturday from 9am to 12pm

We are a family owned and operated business which has opened to service the coffee and lunch needs of the West End community, and we hope to become a meeting place for those in the neighbourhoods around us.

We specialise in fine Italian espresso and locally roasted artisan coffee. Breakfast and lunch are readily available with fresh baking done daily and a wide range of gourmet sandwiches, soups and salads to choose from. We

ensure prompt service and also do takeout catering for your business or family luncheon.

The end of the outdoor gardeningseason is upon us for this year, but we can get our gardening fixby assessing our indoor plants, and sprucing them up for theupcoming winter season.

First of all, plants need a goodsoilless mix to grow properly withgood nutrients and room for rootsto spread. Has your African Violetbeen in that same ugly pot in the

same hard crusty soil for the pastthree years? It is time for amakeover, and your plants willflourish because of it. The initialpot that your plant is in must havedrainage holes, and be largeenough to accommodate the rootswith room for growth. The potcan be plastic or terra cotta, andthen placed in a larger decorativepot on top of marbles or gravel fordrainage. Be sure the plant does-n't sit in water, or root rot and anoffensive odor will occur.

Now update your indoor decorwith some nice pots - add somedrama with hot colors like red, orange or vibrant purple. Visit yourlocal paint or hardware store if youcan't find pots in the colors you

want, and paint them yourself, using a good primer as a base, and then spraypainting or usingacrylic paints with a brush. Paintis an inexpensive way to quicklychange the look of almost any-thing. I have even used wallpaperand satin ribbon hot glued to potsto get a specific look for myhome. You could even change outyour pots to match the holidayseasons (Halloween, Christmas,Easter, etc.). Plants are an inte-gral part of home decor, and yourpots should reflect that.

We have all heard that certainplants help to detoxify and purifythe air in our homes. Winter inEdmonton lasts about six monthson average, with our homes shut

up tight against the cold. We needall the help we can get, and theseplants are listed as the top tenplants for indoor air purification:Areca Palm, Bamboo Palm, Spider

Plant, Gerbera Daisy, Kimberley Queen Fern, Peace Lily, BostonFern, Dwarf Date Palm, Rubberplant, and English Ivy. Spiderplants and English Ivy are easy tostart from cuttings or "babies", andare inexpensive in that regard tointroduce them into your home, obtaining them from your friends, family and neighbors. A true gar-dener shares the wealth, and ishappy to do so.

Until next month, Happy Gardening

Feeling Safe in ourCommunities survey update

The Jasper Place Revitalization(JPR) Feeling Safe in ourCommunities Survey identifiescitizens’ concerns about safetyin the communities of BritanniaYoungstown, Canora, Glenwoodand West Jasper Place. The Feeling Safe in ourCommunities Working Groupwill continue to collect surveysfrom citizens throughout thefall. Results of this analysis will be presented to both the Feeling Safe in ourCommunities CommitteeWorking Group and the JPR Community Steering

Committee, and recommenda-tions will be made on the basisof the results. The Feeling Safein our Communities WorkingGroup supports crime preven-tion initiatives through its budget and volunteer resources, within the mandate of theJasper Place RevitalizationStrategy.

Citizens at the meeting ofOctober 14, 2010, commendedEdmonton Police Service for thepositive impact their bicycle con-stables have had on deterringcrime in the neighbourhoodsthis past summer.

Work Plan for Stony PlainRoad Corridor and surround-ing area

One of the three goals of theJasper Place RevitalizationStrategy is to build community.Achievement of this goal hasbeen facilitated through work-shops and public involvementconsultations. Many businesses,not-for-profit organizations andcitizens have presented their rec-ommendations about how toimprove the Stony Plain Road cor-ridor and surrounding areas. Theurban design vision that had beenapproved has now been given thegreen light to move forward.Phases are to be completed inincrements of approximately fourblocks at a time, with implemen-tation to begin in 2012.

Sometime in late November orearly December, a design workshop or open house willtake place. Community stake-holders will be invited to bringtheir feedback on the design and

recommendations. Urban design-ers and engineers will then workto incorporate as many as possible of the recommenda-tions, after which people will beinvited to review the final version. The City of Edmontonplans to go to tender late in 2011.It will be thrilling to see the firstphase of this exciting, anticipatedimprovement to an historic areaof the city.

Special events update

Newest Giants Mural: Larger-than-life art livens up 100 Avenue

Have you seen the impressiveart work on the south wall ofWestside Automotive, at 10010– 168 Street? Local artist KrisFriesen was commissioned todesign and paint the city’snewest Giants of Edmontonmural, “Our Natural Home.” Tobegin, representatives (citizens, volunteers and the building own-ers) came together and sharedtheir ideas around a river valleytheme. The artist presented sev-eral options and a final designwas selected. The mural isanother way of bringing art tothe community, brightening up100 Avenue in the process. Thiswonderful river valley scenelinks the past with the present,as it shows today’s City ofEdmonton in the backgroundand a historic Fort Edmonton inthe foreground. The mural wasfinded by the City ofEdmonton’s Capital City CleanUp. Landscaping improvementsare planned for the base of themural in the Spring of 2011.

We have been busy planning some of ourevents for 2011. It seems like a long timeyet but once the snow flies so will time.

We will be holding our annual Easter EggHunt on April 23 on the Canora Greenspaceon 149 Street. More details will be availableat a later date.

We are looking at having a flower planting beeat St Anne Park in the spring. It would also bea great time to have a good clean up in thepark after the snow has melted. Please let usknow if you would like to come out and helpbeautify the park. Hopefully the flowers willremain in the flowerbeds this year and notwander off to someone else’s.

Our next meeting will be held on November16 at 7:00PM at Canora Community Hall.Everyone is welcome.
