Spun cast fiberglass columns from Crown Column are
a satisfying combination of modern-day technology
and low maintenance care. Each column shaft is
manufactured by craftsmen to centuries old standards
creating an architectural entasis. Entasis, attributed to
ancient Greek architecture, is the slight convex curving
of the column shaft resulting in a most pleasing
appearance.
Quality, excellence, and aesthetic appeal make Crown
Column products an exceptional value.

Square fiberglass columns offer an alternative to the more traditional round columns. Crown’s plain, fluted,
and recessed panel square spun cast fiberglass columns are made from specially formulated glass-reinforced
polymers with a one-piece shaft and applied astragal with an attractive capital and base moulding. Crown’s
square columns are both low maintenance and strong, resulting in a column that is easy to handle,
water-resistant and impervious to moisture- and insect-related problems.

1. Prepare two sawhorses bywrapping cloth material at thesupport area to prevent damageto the column. Nail or clampblocks to the sawhorses to holdthe column in place whilesplitting.
2. Mark the center of the columnat the bottom of the shaft. Pulla string across this mark alongthe center of the shaft to the top(a stave glue line can be used asa guide for wood columns). In-sure the string is centered alongthe shaft and snap a chalk line.
3. Use a circumferencemeasuring tape to mark theother line dividing half thecircumference at the top andbottom of the shaft. Using themarks as a guide, snap thesecond chalk line.
4. Set the saw depth for cuttingthrough the bead (astragal)portion of the shaft. Note: Anabrasive cut-off blade should beused to split all fiberglasscolumns. Cut from the base endmoving toward the top of theshaft. Rotate the shaft and re-peat cut for the other side.

✔ Split columns are manufactured to go against a wall or surround a structural support and are installedsimilarly to un-split columns.
✔ Split fiberglass columns are not load bearing.
✔ A Split Column Kit should be used to reassemble the shaft halves. If installing more than one splitcolumn, be sure to mark the column halves to prevent mismatch problems.
1. Measure the overall openingheight.
2. Always trim fiberglasscolumns from the bottom of theshaft using an abrasive cut-offblade. Make final adjustmentswith a belt sander or rasp.
3. Insure the adjoining surfacesare clean and dry. Apply a beadof polyurethane adhesive to allconnecting surfaces on bothhalves.
4. Align the column halves to-gether around the structuralsupport and join together.

5. Secure using the straps pro-vided in the Split Column Kit.Place straps approximately 18"apart and pull tight.
6. Larger diameter columns re-quire joining two straps together.Temporary shims maybe re-quired to align thecolumn seam. The shims are re-moved after the polyurethaneadhesive has cured
Refer to Installation of Round Fiberglass Columns for more information on capital and base installation and finishing instructions.✔ Join the base halves together with the polyurethane adhesive and secure in place with rust resistant screws.✔ Join the capital halves together with the polyurethane adhesive and secure in place with rust resistant screws.✔ Apply paintable silicone sealant at the joints between the base, shaft and capital.
7. Install the joining plates at thetop and bottom of each seam.Pre-drill pilot holes through thecolumn and install the rust re-sistant screws provided in theSplit Column Kit.NOTE: Plates are not requiredfor wood columns.
8. Allow the polyurethaneadhesive to thoroughly cure andcut away the straps. Use a puttyknife to remove any excesspolyurethane adhesive. Use auto-motive body filler to cover anyvoids along each seam. Sand bothseams smooth.

✔ Store all wood columns in a cool, dry and well ventilated area.✔ All split columns, capitals and bases must be primed with one (1)
coat of an exterior oil-based primer and then painted with two (2)coats of exterior oil-based paint. NOTE: The seams where glue isto be applied are not to be primed or painted.
✔ The end grain at the bottom of the shaft must be sealed and paintedto protect the column from moisture.
✔ Apply the oil-based primer and paint with a brush to best protectthe column from moisture. Follow the paint manufacturer'sinstructions for best results.
✔ Adequate ventilation is a necessity in the installation of woodcolumns. Ventilation must be provided for at the top of the columnby a recessed soffit. Ventilation will be provided at the bottom ofthe column by the precut openings in the plinth.
✔ Install flashing with all split capitals (Refer to Flashing InstallationInstructions) taking note not to disturb column ventilation.
SPLITWOOD COLUMNS
1. Determine the desiredlocation and temporarily set theshaft into position and ensurethat it is plumb. Lightly mark theoutline of the split shaft.
2. Measure the wall thicknessof the split column on each sideand cut pieces of wood blockingto fit inside the split column.
3. Securely mount the blockingto the wall every 24" along thelength of the column. Be sureto allow for the wall thicknessat each position.
4. Return the column intoposition on the wall. Pre-drill,countersink holes and attachthe shaft to the blocking withrust resistant screws. Do notover tighten the rust resistantscrews or column damage mayoccur.

5. Apply sealant at the joint be-tween the wall and column.
Refer to Installation of Round Fiberglass Columns for more informationon capital and base installation and finishing instructions.✔ Install the split base by pre-drilling holes and mounting the base
to the floor with rust resistant screws.✔ The split capital is installed by pre-drilling holes and mounting the
split capital to the ceiling or wall with rust resistant screws.✔ Fill all screw heads with automotive body filler and sand smooth.✔ Apply paintable silicone sealant to the joints between the base,
capital and shaft.5

✔ Synthetic flashing is required on allexterior wood columns with decorative capitals or any split capital.
✔ Never block column ventilation withflashing.
✔ Install flashing on the side of thesoffit and capital that is exposed tothe elements. The flashing begins1" from the bottom of the soffit andcontinues down to the capital, turnsacross the top of the capital andfolds over 1/2" down the top edge ofthe capital. Flashing is required ontwo sides of the soffit and capitalexposed to the elements when acolumn is installed at a corner.
✔ The floor joist attachment for asecond story balcony is neverto be connected to a wood orfiberglass column. This typeof installation requires the useof a structural support columninside a split wood orfiberglass column. Thisstructural support column iscommonly called a "lolly"column. The weight of thebalcony is carried only bythe lolly column and shouldnot rest on the job-site notchin the column wall.
✔ Always have a structuralengineer approve theinstallation plans for thistype of column installation.
