Protection of the environment
Natural resources form the basis of our exis-tence on this planet. The objective is to use thenatural resources which form the basis of ourexistence on this planet sparingly and in a man-ner which takes the requirements of both natureand humanity into account..Our declared policy is one of integrated envi-ronmental protection, starting at the root cau-ses and encompassing in its management deci-sions all the consequences for the environmentwhich could arise from production processes orthe products themselves. You too can help protect the environment byoperating your Sprinter in an environmentallyresponsible manner.Fuel consumption and the wear of your engine, brakes and tires largely depend on the operatingconditions and your individual driving style. Toreduce fuel consumption and wear, note the fol-lowing:Ravoid short trips.Ralways ensure that the tire pressure is cor-rect.Ravoid frequent and abrupt acceleration.Ravoid carrying unnecessary weight.
Rremove ski and roof racks once you no longerneed them.Rdo not warm up the engine while the vehicle isstationary.Rshift gears in a timely manner so that eachgear is used only up to 2/3 of its maximumengine speed.Rmonitor the fuel consumption.A regularly serviced vehiclewill also help protectthe environment. Comply with the maintenanceintervals indicated by the ASSYST service inter-val display, as well as any other maintenancework that is described in this booklet. We recommend that you have the maintenanceservice carried out by an authorized SprinterDealer using genuine Mercedes-Benz parts.

Introduction
Active Service System (ASSYST)
General notesYour vehicle is equipped with the Active Ser-vice System (ASSYST), which will alert youwhen it’s time for service. The system usesactual engine operating conditions to calculateservice intervals based on your driving condi-tions.Driving conditions such as frequent stop and go,extended idle time, short distance driving andfrequent cold starts will increase the frequencyof required vehicle service. Under severe con-ditions, you might be prompted for service asearly as every 10,000 km.The maintenance computer tracks distancedriven and the time elapsed since your last ser-vice. The service is shown in the multifunctiondisplay in the instrument cluster.Under no circumstances should serviceexceed 30,000 km or 12 months. The multifunction display shows a messageapproximately one month before the mainte-nance service is due. It indicates when the nextservice is due in kilometers or days. The symbols or letters on the service displayshow the type of service that is due.¯ or AA Oil service plus° or BB Maintenance serviceThe sequence of Sprinter services is A-B. Thefirst oil service plus (Service A) is followed by themaintenance service (Service B).
Tire rotationYour vehicle's tires are a critical component tooverall vehicle performance and stability. Theuseful life of tires will vary and is proportional totire type, speed rating, ambient conditions, tireloads, tire inflation pressure, road surfaces, andindividual driving style. We therefore recom-mend regularly checking the tires for wear andcorrect tire pressure, and - if the tire configura-tion allows - that the tires are rotated regularly.Tires can only be rotated on vehicles with thesame tire size on the front and rear axles. If your vehicle's tire configuration allows for tirerotation, tire rotation should be performed inaccordance with the recommended intervals, or
sooner at the first signs of irregular (uneven)tread wear. Tire rotation recommendations willlikely necessitate a tire rotation at least at everymaintenance service.
Single tires at rearIf your vehicle is equipped with tires of the samesize, tires can be rotated by following a front-to-rear rotation pattern that will maintain the inten-ded rotation (spinning) direction of the tire (onunidirectional tires, an arrow on the sidewallindicates the intended rotation or spinningdirection of the tire).
Dual tires at the rearIf your vehicle is equipped with tires of the samesize, the tires on the front axle can be rotatedwith the inner tires on the rear axle in pairs sothat the intended rotation (spinning) direction ofthe tires remains the same. If the tread patternon the tires is not unidirectional, the outer tireson the rear axle can be rotated from one side tothe other.
Diagram showing tire rotation for single and dualtiresThis Maintenance Booklet contains a practicaltire rotation confirmation page, which you canuse to record the date andmileage for every tirerotation (Y page 3).
Severe operating conditionsThe maintenance intervals have been deter-mined so that under normal operating condi-tions the vehicle should operate properlybetween maintenance services. Severe operat-ing conditions may require that the followingparts be replaced at shorter intervals:RINTERIOR FILTERS
Introduction 3
ServiceBooklet
(Examples: dust filter, recirculating air filter, activated charcoal filter or combination filter)are to be replaced as indicated by the main-tenance computer. Under severe dust condi-tions, or if the climate control is operated fre-quently in air recirculation mode, the filtersshould be replaced more frequently than indi-cated by the maintenance computer.RCOOLANTThe coolant (water/anticorrosion/antifreezemixture) should be replaced at the specifiedmaintenance intervals. The coolant may need to be replaced morefrequently if it is not maintained correctlyand/or anticorrosion/antifreeze productsother than those approved for your vehicle arebeing used. You can find coolant instructionsunder the "Coolant" section of the vehicleOperator's Manual. Contact an authorizedSprinter Dealer for a list of anticorrosion/antifreeze products that are approved foryour vehicle.
Wear partsThe maintenance computer recommends theinspection of certain wear parts, however, itcannot judge the condition of these wear parts.Only qualified aftersales technicians can deter-mine if a wear part should be replaced.
Regular checksIn addition to the maintenance service, youshould also perform regular checks on the fol-lowing (e.g. weekly, when refueling, or beforeany long journey):ROil level – Depending on the vehicle equip-ment, check the oil level of the engine usingeither the oil dipstick or using the control sys-tem via the multifunction steering wheel/multifunction display. Refer to the Operator'sManual for more information on measuringthe engine oil level.RCoolant level – The correct procedure forchecking the coolant level is described in theOperator's Manual.RBrake fluid level – If the brake fluid has to berefilled, visit an authorized Sprinter Dealerand have the cause determined, e.g. leakageor worn brake pads.
RWindshield washer system – If the washerfluid level falls below 1/3 full, the warninglamp for the washer fluid level lights up. Addwasher fluid mixed with an approved wind-shield washer concentrate, test function andcheck wiper blades.RLighting systemRTire condition and tire pressure – Check atleast once a month. Refer to the "Tires andWheels" section in the Operator's Manual forguidelines and the correct procedure forchecking the tire condition and tire pressure.

4 IntroductionServiceBooklet
You can find information about the warranty inyour Service and Warranty Information Booklet.Your authorized Sprinter Dealer will gladly pro-vide more information on the maintenance ofyour vehicle.
Parts/service productsWe recommend using only genuine Mercedes-Benz parts for service and repair work, sincethese conform to our specifications. In addition, use only fuels, lubricants and corrosion inhibi-tors/antifreeze agents that correspond to thefactory specifications. Please see your author-ized Sprinter Dealer formore information on thissubject.
Exhaust system maintenance
Warning: exhaust gas aftertreatmentsystem – diesel enginesYour Sprinter is equipped with emission controldevices to comply with current diesel exhaustemission regulations in countries where thevehicle is certified for sale. Follow our recom-mended maintenance instructions in order toensure the proper operating state of your vehi-cle.Note the following:a) Diesel engines require diesel fuel withextremely low sulfur content for road vehicles(maximum 15 ppm sulfur), in compliance withASTM D975 standard. Failure to use ultra lowsulfur highway diesel fuel (ULSD) can severelydamage the vehicle's exhaust gas aftertreat-ment system.b) We approve the use of B5 (standard ULSD,which may contain up to 5% bio-diesel) for allBlueEFFICIENCY ® diesel engines.Diesel fuels that contain a higher proportion ofbio-diesel, e.g. B20 or pure bio-diesel fuel, canseverely damage the engine and fuel systemandare not permitted.Contact your Service Center for more informa-tion. If the B5 bio-diesel blend is not clearlylabeled to indicate that itmeets theULSD stand-ard, it should not be used. The New VehicleLimited Warranty does not cover damagecaused by the use fuels that do not meet ourapproved fuel standards.
c) The prescribed enginemaintenanceworkmust be carried out fully and at the requiredintervals.d) The exhaust gas aftertreatment systemoperation must not be modified in any way.Alterations are not permissible by law. Altera-tions can also damage the catalytic converterand result in increased fuel consumption andimpaired engine running conditions. If the "CHECK ENGINE" indicator lamp lights upin the instrument cluster when the engine isrunning, this indicates that there may be a mal-function in the engine control system or in theexhaust gas aftertreatment system. We recommendhaving themalfunction checkedas soon as possible.
BlueEFFICIENCY® exhaust gas after-treatment using DEFBlueEFFICIENCY® exhaust gas aftertreatmentrequires a reducing agent (DEF) in order to func-tion properly. Maintaining the level and condi-tion of the DEF is part of the regular mainte-nance service work.DEF is a non-flammable, non-toxic, colorlessand odorless, water-soluble liquid.
! Only use DEF according to ISO 22241. Donot add special additives to DEF or dilute itwith water. This can damage the BlueEFFI-CIENCY® exhaust gas aftertreatment.
Description of maintenance work forthe exhaust system
The composition of exhaust emissions is influ-enced not only by the exhaust gas aftertreat-ment system, but also by various engine partsand their settings.Maintenance of the exhaust systemmust there-fore include these engine parts. Some mainte-nance jobs are actually only tests. They areimportant, however, because they allow earlydetection of discrepancies which can later leadto increased exhaust emissions. It is generallyless costly to adjust deviations of this sortimmediately than to wait until they incur highrepair costs. The maintenance intervals havebeen determined so that the vehicle, under nor-

mal operating conditions, should operate prop-erly between maintenance services.
Changing the engine oil and filterReplace the engine oil and oil filter every A and Bservice. If oil consumption increases, determinethe cause and carry out the work necessary toremedy it. Do not reset the service interval dis-play if the oil level is filled up or the oil is changedat times other than the recommended A and Bservices.
Replacing the air filterReplace the air filter every 60,000 km, or every4 years (whichever comes first) when dust con-ditions are normal. Clean the air filter cap andhousing before removing the air filter.
Replacing the fuel filterReplace the fuel filter every 60,000 km.
Checking the diesel particle filterThe level of the diesel particle filter must first bechecked at 150,000 km.If the saturation level is still below the thresholdvalue at 150,000 km, the saturation level of thediesel particle filter must be checked again ateach subsequent oil service plus/maintenanceservice.If the level of the diesel particle filter is above thelimit value, the diesel particle filter should bereplaced.Once the new diesel particle filter has beeninstalled, the checking cycle starts again after150,000 km.
Refilling DEFFill up the DEF at every A and B service, pluswhen indicated in the instrument cluster.
Maintenance service
Vehicle maintenance work (includingexhaust system maintenance)i Themaintenance services should be carriedout at the specifiedmileage or after the speci-fied number of years (whichever comes first).
