Sprint Passing Concepts

Schemes, reads, footwork and mechanics for success in roll passing

game.

Scheme

Our sprint passes are intended to attack one sideline of the field with vertical routes at different depths are used to attack and playside the dog and corner.

Scheme

That Means:• QB will sprint toward one side of the formation

with the goal of getting outside the tackle.• The QB should become a running threat as well

as a passing threat in sprint passes.• WR routes must be run to create the spacing

that is needed to pressure a defense.• Line protections will reach to the side of the

play.

Footwork / Coaching Points

• Shotgun– 3 step roll + sprint– “Turn the corner” and

attack• Footwork Shown– Start like Roll– Come downhill– Close shoulders to the

target– Present a running threat

• Footwork shown– Make sure to close

your shoulders to the target

Pre-Snap Read

• Assess coverage. – What is the safeties job?– What is the corners job?

• How does this combination stress his responsibilities?

– What is the dog’s job?• What throwing lanes might he take away? Where will the space

be?

• Blitzes? – Think through where you will go with the ball if a backer

leaves an area.• Don’t over think it. Attack.

Post-Snap Reads

• Progression Read– Almost identical to the Roll passes. • Low / High / Inside: Read the corner low to high then

inside to crossers.• High / Low / Inside: Read the corner low to high then

inside to crossers.

– For example: Sidelines (9 / 4 / 2q)• Read the 9 route down the sidelines. If the corner

doesn’t go back on the first step, throw the 9 rt. If he does run with the 9, come down to the underneath routes 4 and 2q routes.

Playside Routes

When a play is called (ex. Sidelines Rt), all the receivers on the playside (ex. Rt) execute the numbers on the card (ex. 9 / 4 / 2q)

Backside Routes

All receivers on the backside of the call (left in this example) carry out the predetermined backside routes. Those are: 7c / 3c

7c3c

Post-Snap Reads

• Progression Read (cont.)– These reads are set up to happen in a natural line

of site and are timed with the drop• The QB should never be looking left, right, left or look

left throw right.• Always right to left / left to right and high to low / low

to high or a combination of the two (See example on next slide)

Plays

• There are three base plays in the Roll portion of our offense.

• Roll Plays:– Sidelines– Spacing– Wheel

• Player Routes– Similar to the quick plays, players are assigned routes that

change if they are the #1, #2, or #3 receiver. – Backside routes are always 7c / 3c / 1d regardless of the play

called to the playside
