dling stormwater, as well ashuman and solid waste, at fivemajor City-owned facilities: Mira-mar Landfill, Metro Biosolids Cen-ter, North City Reclamation Plant,Point Loma Wastewater Treat-ment Plant, and South Bay WaterReclamation Plant.
Additionally, Coastkeeper andCERF negotiated for the City tocontribute $35,000 to San DiegoAudubon Society, which will usethe funds to improve water qualityand restore habitats in and aroundMission Bay.
“The City’s own recent audit ofits stormwater departmentrevealed a long history of failingto prioritize stormwater infras-tructure and management prac-tices needed to protect clean water, public health, and our beaches andstreams,” said Coastkeeper execu-tive director and managing attor-ney Matt O’Malley. “These failureswere also evident in the City’s han-dling of its own facilities, which foryears have been polluting MissionBay and other local waterwayswhere children, families, andwildlife depend on clean water.”
Early last year, Coastkeeper andCERF observed that the City was
discharging stormwater ladenwith toxic pollutants, includingbacteria from human waste, dis-solved metals, and excess nutrientsdirectly into local waters duringrainstorms.
The investigations identified pos-sible impacts to Rose Creek, SanClemente Creek, Mission Bay,Tijuana River, and ultimately, thePacific Ocean. The groups noted toCity officials that pollutant levelsleaving the Miramar Landfill andentering into Mission Bay were thehighest they had seen from anysingle facility in the county.
BAY >> CONT. FROM PG. 1
At age 89, bluesman TomcatCourtney remains one of the hard-est working men in San Diego'smusic community. Still maintain-ing several weekly residencies, including Wednesday nights atThe Turquoise in Pacific Beach.
Courtney picked up the six stringguitar just after end of WWII andhe's also mentored generations ofmusicians along the way, helpingto preserve the blues music heloves so much. Sadly father time istaking it's toll on our music leg-ends. If you haven't caught a setfrom him yet, make it a priority.
Tom Cat Courtney: Wednes-days at The Turquoise, 873Turquoise St., at 8 p.m. All ages.theturquoise.com.
Tio Leo's hosts a particularlydiverse bill on Nov. 30, with fourmusical genres on the bill includ-ing Celtic-inspired combo, AssPocket Whiskey Fellas,Cajun/Zydeco band The BayouBrothers, The Jazz Pockets andclassic country rocker Dave Glea-son. All the groups are highlyrated, but the standout here is gui-tarist Gleason, who can pick and
twang with the best of them. Mix-ing in elements of surf and R&B,Gleason's guitar playing is stellarand the perfect way to kick off agreat night of music.
Dave Gleason: Friday, Nov. 30at Tio Leo's, 5302 Napa St. at 9p.m. 21 and up. tioleos.com.
Rap-rockers Kottonmouth Kingshit the stage at Brick by Brick onNov. 30. Touring in support of twoalbums released this year, "TheHarvest" and "Kingdom Come,"the band has developed an intense-ly loyal following that has sus-tained them over more than twodecades. The Kottonmouth Kingsnew single, "Loyalty is Royalty,"shows them hitting just as hard asever, with atmospheric beats andan anthemic chorus. If you likeyour shows heavy on the beats, fullof inspired wordplay and loud, thisones for you.
Kottonmouth Kings: Friday,Nov. 30 at Brick by Brick, 1130Buenos Ave. at 8:30 p.m.
Jazz fans won't want to miss aspecial concert from The Bi-National Mambo Orchestra atDizzy's on Nov. 30. Under the direc-tion of trumpeter Bill Caballero,
the 18-piece big band will present,TP Meets PP, an evening devoted tothe music of Latin music legends, percussionist Tito Puente andpianist Perez Prado. With morethan 100 years of music betweenthem, the song possibilities areendless. It's a shame Dizzy's doesn'thave a dance floor, these are songswith irresistible rhythms.
The Bi-National MamboOrchestra: Friday, Nov. 30 atDizzy's, 1717 Morena Blvd. at 7p.m. 21 and up. dizzysjazz.com.
Java Joe's in Old Town is nowThe Backdrop. The venue isexpanding beyond its traditionalsinger-songwriter shows, withgame nights, movie nights andhip-hop amongst the upcomingadditions to its schedule. On Nov.30, the bill will be topped by RobDeez. His music is hard to catego-rize, ranging as it does from tradi-tional topical folk to acoustic hip-hop, but his tunes are alwayslyrically clever with plenty ofhooks. Deez has released plenty ofmusic, but live is where engaginghumor an observations work best.
Rob Deez: Friday, Nov. 30 atThe Backdrop, 2611 CongressSt., at 8 p.m.
