Lula’s StoryALI AND BILL HELLEBUSCH FOUND COMFORT AND CARE AT THE RONALD McDONALD HOUSE AFTER THE BIRTH OF THEIR NEW BABY, LULA

In January 2012, Ali and Bill Hellebusch were getting ready to have their first baby. But during an ultrasound a week after Ali’s 34-week check-up, doctors discovered that the baby would be born with a diaphragmatic hernia, an abnormal opening in the diaphragm that allows organs from the abdomen to move up into the chest.

Soon after, Ali and Bill traveled from their home in Washington, Missouri, to see a specialist in St. Louis, where a fetal non-stress test revealed that Ali would need to deliver within the hour. Just a few short hours later, their baby,

Lula, was transported to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.Bill stayed at the NICU while Ali recovered from surgery, but it was difficult for her to be away from her newborn baby.

“It was very scary,” says Ali. “She was so critical, I didn’t think I was going to see her again.”

As soon as Ali was able to leave the hospital, she joined Bill to be close to Lula. One day later, the couple moved into the Ronald McDonald House on Park Avenue, just a block away from

the hospital. According to Ali and Bill, staying so close to Lula and the NICU has made all the difference.

“I can’t imagine not staying here, how hectic it would have been,” explains Ali, who now spends all day, every day at the hospital. “The House has been our ‘home-away-from-home.’”

In just two short months, little Lula has undergone four surgeries. However, she’s also made remarkable progress and it won’t be long before the Hellebusch family brings their new baby girl home to Washington.

“Now I get to hold her every day,” beams Ali. “I feel so lucky and blessed.”

AS SPRING BREAKS, we see signs of new life all around us. It is always a reminder to me that so many great events, like our Golf Tournament, Ronald McDonald House Ride, Kids & Clays and Scramble will soon be upon us. It is both a joy and an inspiration to me to work with so many dedicated volunteers who give their time, talent and treasure. The staff of Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Metro St. Louis is very small in comparison to the services provided to families and their children. Daily, families and children are greeted with a smile; items are recycled; gardens are pruned; homemade meals are prepared; household items are donated; individuals, organizations and corporations sponsor families; memorials and tributes are offered; and the list continues. This great mission of providing a “home-away-from-home” exists because of you. We are great stewards of our donations because of you.

This newsletter is intended to keep you fully informed of the wonderful happenings at RMHC St. Louis. You are an important part of our family. You may be invited in the days and months ahead to participate in an event, to consider making a Memorial or Tribute gift, to make a meal or to save your tab tops. Whatever you choose, please know the gratitude of the families and children who benefit from a place to sleep, a warm meal, a hot shower and clean clothes. RMHC St. Louis will host the 12th Annual Kids & Clays Tournament, sponsored by Marcone Supply, on August 17 and 18. A dinner auction, which will feature many exciting silent and live auction items, will be held on Friday evening at the Edward Jones Atrium. The Sporting Clays tournament begins on Saturday morning at the spectacular Nilo Farms in Alton, IL, with three

flights and 100 targets per participant. This event offers four classes, with prizes for each place, as well as a sub-junior division (under age 14), junior division (ages 14-17), ladies

division and corporate team challenge. Breakfast, lunch and beverages will be served throughout the day, with an awards ceremony at the conclusion.

This year will mark the 19th Annual Scramble for Charity Golf Tournament, sponsored by McDonald’s on Friday, September 21 at the Forest Park Golf Course. Foursomes compete for great prizes in either a morning (7 a.m.) or afternoon (1 p.m.) round. The registration fee of only $100/$125 per person includes a gift bag, lunch and refreshments on the course. Golfers have the opportunity to test their luck at several par 3 games set up on the course. This tournament continues to grow each year, attracting participants looking for a fun, affordable tournament supporting a good cause.

FAMILY ROOM VOLUNTEER

SPOTLIGHTGary Kirwin has been volunteering in the Ronald McDonald Family Room at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center

since it first opened in 2008, but his connection with the hospital began in 1967 when he was a patient there for open-heart surgery. Now, every Saturday from 3 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m., he helps families

who are going through situations similar to his own 45 years ago. According to Gary, sometimes helping is as simple as offering a cup of coffee, and

sometimes it’s listening and sharing experiences. “I can’t heal the child,” he says, “but I can try to soothe the hurt.” Gary also understands the importance of creating an atmosphere that makes families

feel comfortable and cared for, so he provides cookies and other special treats. “That way, when people step off the elevator, they smell home,” he says.

Paula Richter has been volunteering in the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Mercy Children’s Hospital since it first opened in 2005, before it was relocated to the new pediatric tower. Paula enjoys traveling, so instead of adopting a regular weekly shift, she helps by covering unfilled time slots. As a substitute volunteer, she sometimes helps in the Family Room as often as twice a week, and every shift is completely different. Paula’s flexibility is especially helpful because it allows the Family Rooms to remain open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.

“Over the years, I’ve gotten to know some of the families,” Paula says of why she enjoys lending a hand. “It makes a difference to the people who are stressed out, and I feel a sense of accomplishment.”

Cindy Knauss has been volunteering in the Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Louis Children’s Hospital since it first opened in 2007. She volunteers every Thursday from noon to 3 p.m., and she has also helped with the family surveys. In addition to donating her

time in the Ronald McDonald Family Room, Cindy has been volunteering at the information desk at St. Louis Children’s Hospital for 13 years.

Interacting with the families is one of Cindy’s favorite parts of volunteering. “My role is to make them feel comfortable,” says Cindy. She also likes seeing the families support one another in their times of need. “The families become friends. It’s a community.”

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIESMonthly volunteer information sessions are held for people interested in learning more about our volunteer opportunities.

Immediate Needs:HOUSE VOLUNTEERS – Volunteers are needed during the week at our Park Avenue House to help welcome families, assist visitors and support our House Managers.

PICK-UP/DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS – Volunteers are needed on a weekly and/or on-call basis to help us pick up and deliver supplies and donations.

MAINTENANCE VOLUNTEERS – Volunteers with varying maintenance skills are needed on a weekly basis to support our Facilities Manager and help keep our Houses up and running for the families we serve.

FAMILY ROOM VOLUNTEERS – Shifts are available at the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms located in St. Louis Children’s Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center for volunteers to help check-in families and maintain a welcoming atmosphere.

A HISTORY OF GIVING

BETTY BRITTAIN, a member of our original Board of Directors, reminisces about Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis and how much we’ve grown.

Betty Brittain’s history of giving to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis began more than 30 years ago. As a founding Board member, Betty has donated an enormous

amount of her time and talent to our organization. She coordinated our first big event — a gala at the Historic American Theater, now the Roberts Orpheum Theater, with entertainment by the

famous Roger Williams, followed by a dinner at the Roberts Mayfair Hotel. Thanks to the dedication of Betty and her fellow founders, Betty has watched RMHC St. Louis grow from an

organization of three employees and an eight-bedroom facility to one with more than 20 employees and three Houses, eight long-term apartments and three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms.

“It’s a family-oriented charity that has grown tremendously from eight bedrooms to 59,” says Betty of the incredible progress she’s witnessed over the years. “It’s just wonderful.”

COUPONING FOR A CAUSE

Games for a dollar apiece, full-size tubes of toothpaste for free, and earning a dollar on body wash are just a few of the incredible deals St. Peters resident Susan Martin has

uncovered through the hobby of “extreme couponing.” However, rather than clipping coupons simply to shave

down her grocery bill, she turns big deals into donations for charity. In December, Martin donated 256 wish list items — all from couponing — to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis.

“People think couponing is a lot of work, but it’s really not that hard,” says Susan. “I’ve turned it into something I truly love to do because I can give to other people. It’s something bigger than yourself.”

Her catalyst for couponing began less than a year ago after she watched “Extreme Couponing” on TLC, but since then, she’s learned most of her methods from online blogs.

“Of course, most people give a whole new meaning to the word extreme; I’m not extreme, but I would say I’m not casual, either,” Susan says of her couponing habits in

comparison to those seen on the show.She began donating excess products to friends, family

and neighbors, but still ended up with a surplus. “When I got to 80 tubes of toothpaste, I knew I needed to

start doing more than that,” she says.Although she donates to several local organizations, she

decided to donate to RMHC St. Louis upon her husband’s suggestion. Now we have become her “charity of choice.”

“I love what Ronald McDonald House does. At that time, I had a lot of toys; it started because of the toys, but after talking to people at the Ronald McDonald House, I learned I could give a lot more than I had originally thought,” she says.

For Susan, monetary donations are not always feasible, but couponing is a way for her to donate her time and talent to valuable causes. “My time and effort are sometimes worth more,” she adds.

Susan spends about 4-6 hours per week on couponing. She plans to make another hefty donation to RMHC St. Louis in the near future.

NEW FACESFrank Cognata joined RMHC St. Louis as the Vice President of Development in December. Frank has served in the field of not-for-profit management for almost 30 years. He previously served as Chief Development Officer for the Archdiocese of St. Louis. As a native of St. Louis, he has had the opportunity to work extensively in the philanthropy community. He was awarded Fundraiser of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and

serves on multiple not-for-profit boards. As a Certified Fundraising Executive, Frank has served as Certification Chair in the St. Louis Metropolitan Region teaching and mentoring other professionals seeking certification.

Lauren Frizzo joined the RMHC Park Avenue staff in March as Event Assistant. Lauren studied Communication and Marketing at McKendree University before attending graduate school at the University of Illinois. Previously, Lauren worked for McKendree University as the Director of Annual Giving. Her professional experience includes volunteer management, event planning and fundraising.

In her free time, Lauren enjoys photography, traveling, reading and

spending time with her fiancé, Justin, and dog, Dozer.

RMHC ST. LOUIS WELCOMES TWONEW BOARD MEMBERS

Many of the families staying at our Ronald McDonald Houses are away from their own pets for months at a time. But thanks to a caring group of volunteers, they are still able to spend time with loving canine and feline companions — the pet therapy animals from the St. Louis Chapter of Love on a Leash.

Vicki Daugherty and Michelle Cardosi, both of whom bring their pets to the Ronald McDonald House on Park Avenue, are founding members of the St. Louis chapter of Love on a Leash. They started the chapter in 1997 and began visiting RMHC St. Louis every other Tuesday evening at the start of 2012.

“We’ve seen so many happy families,” adds Michelle, who brings her 16-year-old cat, Cleo. “They make our day.”

One day in February, it was meant to be that Cleo came for a visit. Alexis Henson, 10, who was staying at the House, was overjoyed to see her. Because she was undergoing treatment at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, Alexis had not seen her own cats for nearly six weeks. Simply sitting with Cleo for an hour was enormously therapeutic.

It’s moments like these that Vicki, Michelle and St. Louis’ 75 other Love on a Leash volunteers — as well as their animals — cherish.

“We’ve had so much fun coming to the Ronald McDonald House,” says Vicki, and with a wag of his tail, her dog, Casey, agrees.

Lincoln Gray, Principal at Brown Smith Wallace, LLC, and Doug Vanderslice, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, have joined RMHC St. Louis’ 2012 Board of Directors.

Prior to being nominated to the Board of Directors, Gray served on RMHC St. Louis’ Kids & Clays event committee for more than four years and on the Development Committee for two years.

While relatively new to RMHC St. Louis, Vanderslice brings 19 years of leadership experience in children’s hospitals in both St. Louis and Dallas.

The organization is also proud to recognize and honor outgoing board member Alicia Busse for her dedication to the RMHC mission.

The Heart and Sole Award was created in 2005 to honor Coldwell Banker Gundaker in recognition of its more than 20-year

commitment to RMHC St. Louis. Now, every year, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis honors a company that emulates Coldwell Banker Gundaker’s long-term commitment and generosity. In 2011, this honor was given to RubinBrown.

“We are honored to be recognized for this prestigious award from an organization that does so much to provide comfort and care to children and their families in a time of need,” says Steve Hays, RubinBrown partner. “‘Devotion to our Community’ is a core value of RubinBrown, as we have been involved with the House and its many activities for over 20 years.”

For more than two decades, RubinBrown employees have donated an untold number of volunteer hours. Hays is

a past chairman of RMHC St. Louis’ Board of Directors, and RubinBrown partner Felicia Malter serves as Treasurer on the current Board of Directors. Several other RubinBrown employees serve on a number of volunteer committees. The company’s employees also collect wish list items and participate in the Family Dinner Program.

In addition, RubinBrown helps RMHC St. Louis by supporting three of its largest fundraising events: the annual Cassidy Turley/RMH Golf Tournament, Kids & Clays Tournament and McDonald’s Scramble for Charity. The company also sponsored the Gala of Gratitude in 2010, which celebrated the opening of our third Ronald McDonald House.

St. Louis-area Dillard’s stores generously donated $27,575, the proceeds from its 2011 Southern Living Christmas Cookbook.

Stella Goltzman thoughtfully asked friends to bring books to her birthday party instead of presents so that she could donate them to the Ronald McDonald House.

Woodard Cleaning & Restoration presented Dan Harbaugh with a check for $860, the proceeds from a Facebook fundraiser. For every new person who “liked” Woodard’s Facebook page, the company donated $2 to RMHC St. Louis.

Thank you to the Eureka Pacific Elks for hosting a barbecue competition last fall to support our mission of providing a “home-away-from-home.” This event raised $7,200 for RMHC St. Louis!

Last fall, twin sisters Lily and Meg Baylis donated an Xbox 360 they won in a raffle to the Ronald McDonald House on Park Avenue. They even purchased a few games to go with the system for kids and their families who are staying at the House.

Our friends at Nies/Artcraft recently held a Wish List drive, which collected nearly 6,000 items for our families.

Madelyn Thrasher donated several containers of tab tops in memory of her cousin, Ryann Hope, whose family found comfort and care in our Ronald McDonald Family Room.
