The SPMDTU (Sociedad Proteccion Mutua de Trabajadores Unidos), the oldest Hispanic organization in thenation which still meets at convention, recently held traditional inauguration ceremonies for newly elected offi-cials.

The ceremonies, conducted in Spanish, took place in Antonito, Colorado, the site of the original Council, andhome to the Supreme Council officials. The newest Supreme Council officials were elected by at-large member-ship in last November’s bi-annual convention, also held in Antonito.

Former Supreme Council President Rogelio Briones encouraged newly elected officers to continue the currentprojects of the SPMDTU, which include historical preservation funding and renovation of the Concilio Superiorbuilding located on Main Street in Antonito, as well as continued work with the University of New Mexico authorDr. Jose Rivera in completing his historical book on the SPMDTU.

Elected officers for 2004-2006 are: David Ortiz, Concilio 26, President; Michael Antencio, Concilio 19, Vice-President; Rudy Maestas, Las Placitas Concilio, Counselor: Ray Garcia, Concilio 7, Consiguero; and Cleo Valerio,Concilio 18, Guard. Appointed officers for 2004-2006 are: Tomas Romero, Concilio 19, Secretary-Treasurer; andOrlando Gallardo, Concilio 1, Doorman.

In a moving ceremony, newly-elected President David Ortiz recalled his grandfather’s nurturing and wisdom instarting his personal involvement in the Society. “My grandfather would be so proud of me right now, and I knowhe is looking upon us at this time.” stated Ortiz, “This is a dream I always had and now is a reality. I will contin-ue to serve proudly and with dignity in his memory as a brilliant yet humble man.”

THE SPMDTU was founded in 1900, and still exists today as the original Hispanic organization to championHispanic rights.

Dear WSA:I would like to thank the WSA for the recognition of my years as a

member. I am now retired from my life long career with the city andCounty of Denver. I was elected councilman in District 9 for three termsand served 10 years on the Council in which the Globeville district and theWSA played a large role. I was then appointed to Manager of Parks and Recreation and served onthe Mayors cabinet for the remaining eighteen years until my retirement in 1983. I have had avery active retirement playing senior softball, bowling and golf. I am also kept very busy with mynine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

have one son, Eugene, a wonderful daughter-in-law, Barbara, and twograndchildren, Neil and Rebecca. I have three brothers.

I worked for GE 42-years as a group leader and a foreman formany years.

My husband and I walk at the mall everyday. We help people thatneed help. I read a lot and crochet, knit and sew. I also bake a lot of

potica, strukle, strudel and many other goodies. I love to cook Slovenian food. We also do sometraveling.

regard to my mother Anna White.Anna enjoyed her home on

Independence Street in Arvada,where she lived for thirty-someyears. She took great pride in heryard. Everyone would come to see

the beautiful flowers she would plant and tend to.Mom and Gil loved to go camping with their son and

daughter in the mountains of Colorado. They also loved tofish.

They now reside in a nursing home at 38th and Harlan.It’s not their wish to be there, but all their needs are beingtaken care of. Anna is 95, and Gil is 90.

Dear WSA:First, let me thank you

for acknowledging me formy 50 years of membershipin WSA, the check and thecertificate, and I look for-ward to the banquet July9th at the Brown Palace,which several of my familymembers also look forwardto attending with me.

Secondly, a brief noteabout myself. My maternalgrandparents immigrated atthe turn of the last century

from then Yugoslavia to Salida, Colorado, where I wasborn, a Colorado native, and was enrolled with aJuvenile Certificate at WSA early on. I graduated fromDelta, CO high school and became a registered nurseafter graduating from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing inDenver.

I married Gene Paquette, also a native of CO, onJune 4, 1960 in Salida, CO and we have 3 sons, Brad,Doug and Kevin. We lived 38 years in Longmont, COwhere Gene worked as an Air Traffic Controller withThe Federal Aviation Agency. I worked off and on for42 years as an RN and decided to retire in 2000, andwe moved to the mountains near Black Hawk, CO.Sadly, just a few months later, Gene died from anaggressive form of cancer. My best friend, soul mateand love of my life was taken from me.

But life goes on and I try to stay busy. I love to trav-el, especially cruising, and to do things with my sister,friends, 3 sons and two grandsons. I belong to St. Maryof the Assumption Catholic Church in Central City, COand enjoy the Colorado Symphony, the Central CityOpera, and of course, gambling in Black Hawk.

Travels have taken me to such exciting places aroundthe world, as well as journeys near by, like Santa Fe.Last fall was a highlight, visiting Russia and theScandinavian countries, London, Berlin and Estonia.

Thank you for the check commemoratingmy sixty years of membership.

My mother enrolled me in the WSA whenI was still in high school in Pueblo,Colorado.

I was married in 1947 while still living inPueblo. We moved to Fort Morgan, CO in1963 because of my husband’s job. We wereblessed with seven children, five daughtersand two sons. This kept me busy as a moth-er and homemaker.

After getting all my children in school I worked for theschool district for 20 years as a teacher assistant and retiredin 1994. My husband and I liked to travel and visit ourgrown children who live in different parts of the country. Weeven have a daughter who lives in Italy.

My husband of fifty-si x years passed away in August,2004, I have fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchil-dren. My family keeps me busy along with church work andmy hobbies of knitting, sewing and quilting.

Dear WSA:As the Assistant Family Program Director for the

State of Colorado, I would like to thank everyoneinvolved with the Thanksgiving food donation to ourNational Guard members and their families! Your orga-nization’s donation made an absolute and definite dif-ference in the lives of two very needy families.

Jodi, the Air Guard family that we delivered to wasspeechless, but only momentarily! I was told that thefirst thing she did was call her father and after tellinghim how many boxes of food you had brought her, shesobbed out of gratefulness. The family reports thatTalea, the baby, is doing fine. Nothing has changed, butfor her, that’s a good thing. Tony is still a little live-wireand I understand that he loves his new “truck.” Herecently underwent a relatively minor surgical proce-dure, but is doing just fine.

The Army family that I delivered your donation to,lives in Greeley. They are a struggling young familywith hearts of gold! While my daughter and I put thefood and other items in her car, the young wife stoodthere shaking her head with tears in her eyes. It waswhen I pointed out that your organization had given thechildren toys that she really started to cry. Her husband,a Private first Class in the Army National Guard, calledme at home that evening to thank the WSA. He told mehow timing was everything and how desperate theytruly were.

Granted, these were two extreme cases, but I thankyou from the bottom of my heart for giving to them sogenerously! What a blessing you are!

Chairman John Kogovsek called the meeting of the Board to order.All Directors were present. Guests Honorary Director Mehelich,Board Legal Advisor Dan Kogovsek, Vice-President of OperationsTina Scribner, Controller Tammy Kanary and Asset AdministratorJack Hall were also present.

Reports were given by the following individuals:• Controller Tammy Kanary • President/CEO Randy Fuss• Board Junior Department Advisor Roger Lewis • Board Legal Advisor Dan Kogovsek

The Board performed the following actions:

• Approved the minutes of the meeting of the Board of Directors held July 10, 2004.

• Approved the 2004 third quarter statement of WSA.

• Approved the minutes of the Finance Committee and ratified the actions of the Finance Committee since the prior Board meeting.

• Approved the 2005 budget as presented.

• Approved a minor housekeeping change to the WSA Fraternal Life Investment Policy.• Approved, for the 2005 calendar year, that dividends on all non-1980 CSO life products shall be

paid using the current scale of 3.5% of statutory reserves as of 12/31/04, and shall be calculated on the net certificate reserve value. Dividends shall be suspended for post-1980 CSO products forthe 2005 calendar year. The cash values of the affected certificates will continue to grow as per the contract guarantees.

• Approved the 2005 LAFP allocation per lodge based on a $15 per member per month allocationbased on the average attendance in 2004. (Additionally, subsidies for events shall not exceed $25/per member in any given month for any given lodge.)

• Approved the renewal of the LAIP for 2005, with a maximum budget of $7000 and with the qualifications and parameters as outlined in the lodge reference manual.

• Approved the creation of a scholarship budget allowing for $2000 per qualified applicant who meets the qualifications of a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average, 40 hours of community service during the applicant’s senior year, and a minimum of 4 years continuous membership with WSA.
