Competitive Step ProgramIt is with great excitement that we introduce the Chicago Heights Park District will begin a Competitive Step Team, under the leadership of Coach Victor Hicks, this year for stu-dents in grades 3-12, Psi Phi Beta (ΨΦΒ) !! Stepping is a percussion art that takes elements of dance, drama, singing and chanting and combines them into exciting performanc-es. African American fraternities and sororities made the art form popular. Step was featured in the film “Stomp the Yard” and “Drumline” and there are step team programs offered at many schools nationwide.

our purpose in bringing step is tri-fold:

• Leadership: To develop key leadership skills in our students including responsibility, focus, hard-work, dedication and best performance of duty. In addition to introducing students to stepping, there will be a strong focus on mentorship as well.

• Healthy Lifestyles: According to studies, children in elementary and high schools across the country are

experiencing obesity at higher rates than ever. We will use stepping as a means to introduce healthy activity to students and encourage healthy lifestyles in our team members.

• College Readiness: Stepping is an activity made popular by African-American and Latino Fraternities and Sororities. These organizations are housed on college campuses. Where we believe that it is never too early to start considering college; students will be introduced to this facet collegiate life to increase their interest in attending a four-year college or university.

the competitive season has 5- 6 week sessions. each session.

Session I - March 31 - May 5

Fee: $40.00 $45 NR

Additional Costs for the Competitive Program

*These costs may be offset by parent fundraising efforts.

Psi Phi Beta Summer Step Camp Summer Step Camp Session I: July 7-July 30 (Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays) 5-8pm

Summer Step Camp Session II: August 4-August 27 (Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays) 5-8pm

Location: Commissioners Park

Class Description: The Chicago Heights Park District’s Psi Phi Beta Step Team presents our Summer Step Camp 2014!! Step-ping is a fun and healthy form of dance in which the body is used as an instrument to create intricate sounds using foot stomps, hand claps and the spoken word.

Stepping is based on a long and rich tradition in African-based communities, where movements and sounds are used to pledge allegiance to a particular group. It draws movements from the South African gumboot dance, which is an art form where South African miners used as an alternative to drumming which was banned by authorities. What a rich and exciting history step-ping has to offer and we would love for your child to be a part of this legacy!!

The stepping tradition in the United States, now practiced by college students, churches, middle and high schools alike, was sparked by songs and rituals of the Historically Black Fraternities and Sororities beginning in the early 1900’s. This tradition is continued today by programs such as the Chicago Heights Park District’s own competitive program, Psi Phi Beta Competitive Youth Step Teams.

Come and Break the stage with this exciting art form!! Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of stepping, engage in fun and fast-paced cardiovascular exercise and gain an under-standing of the rich history of stepping through reading the hit book about stepping, “Tap Dancing without Shoes” by author Rick Daniels.

This class is ideal for students who are thinking about joining Psi Phi Beta or step teams at their school as well. It’s also a fun and easy way to get and stay in shape!

Session Cost: $200.00

*Cost includes copy of “Tap Dancing without Shoes”, daily snack and camp t-shirt

Sessions are open to boys and girls entering grades 3rd-12th.

Blackbirds Youth developmental HockeyMidwest Youth Hockey Association was formed in the fall of 2006 with the intension of providing children from Northwest Indiana the opportunity to learn, compete, and enjoy the game of ice hockey. The Maniax were founded on the principles of a strong commitment to skill development, promotion of sportsman-ship and fair play, and an unmatched work ethic. When you join you are putting your child in a position to learn more than just play the game of hockey. Dedication, discipline, and a strong desire to compete will be instilled in each of our aspiring athletes through a regimented curriculum focused on optimizing the per-formance of the individual, and above all, our teams.

REd totS 3-5Balance, edge work, self-confidence, and FUN are stressed in each class. Hockey helmet, with facemask, and hockey gloves are required by the 3rd week. Skating skills include: stopping, falling and getting up, marching, gliding, swizzles, and back-ward skating.

WHItE PRE-HoCkEY 6 ANd uPBalance, edge work, self-confined and FUN is stressed at each class. Hockey helmet and hockey gloves are required. Skating skills include: stopping, backwards skating, and forward right and left crossovers. Pre-hockey is designed for boys and girls in-terested in learning the skating skills required to advance onto the Cross-Ice Hockey Program and organized team play. Prospective skaters must be able to skate across the ice on their own prior to enrollment. Forward and backward stride, hockey stop on both feet, transitions, and right and left crossovers are emphasized each class.

BLuE CRoSS ICE Mini-‘Ax is the bridge program between hockey learns to skate and the Midwest Maniax Youth Hockey teams. Cross Ice is a two day program and is based on the US Hockey Development Model of practicing and playing games across the width of the ice rather than full ice. By reducing the playing area, the cross ice model allows players to increase the number of times they touch the puck, increase puck possession times, and increase speed in playing situations, all of which translates into faster development of the individual skills necessary to keep our young players excited and motivated. Cross Ice classes are divided by age and/or skill. USA Hockey registration and full hockey equip-ment are required.

my Journey to fitnessAbout a year ago I came to the realization that I needed to do something for myself. So I embarked on my fitness journey. I was lucky enough to meet my personal trainer, Lisa. She has not only helped me transform and lose some much unwanted pounds, but has given me encouragement and helped me gain much needed self-confidence along the way.

At the start I was 177 pounds and feeling way out of shape. Silly thing was, all the while I was not working out, I was paying the monthly fee. My wonderful husband gifted me with 4 personal training sessions last Christmas, which honestly kicked my butt. Slowly as I gained strength and stamina, I started to peel away pounds. To date I have lost about 30 pounds and feel great. I am now running 4 miles with no problem.

Lisa has a quiet persistence about her, which makes me look for-ward to not on ly training sessions, but hitting the gym at 5:00 in the morning when most sane people are still asleep.

Board meetingsThe Chicago Heights Park District Board of Commissioners meeting is held the second Monday of each month at 7 pm at the Recreation Center, 1400 Chicago Road. Meetings are open to the public, if you are interested, please feel free to attend.

ParentsYou are an important part of your child's learning process and we encourage you to become as involved as possible. How-ever, our instructors have found that the quality of instruction is affected by parent and/or sibling distractions. You are always welcome to discuss your child's progress with his/her instructor. We hope that your child will attend class independently. With your child's best interest in mind, you are invited to attend the last class of the session. Thank you for your cooperation.

Park PermitsAll parks are open to everyone's use during regular park hours of dawn to dusk. The Park District will be issuing permits to resi-dent groups of Chicago Heights who wish to reserve parkland areas. Requests for 2014 park rentals are now being accepted.
