I primi macchinari li acquista in Inghilterra negli anni Sessanta
dell’Ottocento.
indossati dallo star system hollywoodiano. Un fotogramma su tutti:
Humphrey Bogart e Ingrid Bergman nell’indimenticabile scena
portano un Borsalino Jean Paul Belmondo in "Fino all’ultimo
respiro", Marcello Mastroianni in "8 e 1/2" e Tony Servillo ne "La
grande bellezza", premio Oscar 2014.
ogni singolo cappello.

Borsalino: 160 Years of History
On 4th April 2017 Borsalino, the oldest Italian company specialised
in making luxury hats, celebrated its 160th birthday. To mark
this anniversary, the Italian Ministry for Economic Development
has recognised Borsalino as an example of national excellence,
dedicating a € 0.95 stamp to the company.
The company's history
On 4th April 1857 Giuseppe Borsalino opened a small artisanal
workshop in Alessandria to make felt hats. He bought his first
machinery from England in the 1860s. In 1900 he was awarded
the Grand Prix at the Paris Exposition Universelle, an international
certification of quality, and a new workshop was inaugurated, the
largest in Alessandria which now hosts the University and the
Borsalino Hat Museum.
From the 1920s onwards, the company which was at these times
in the hands of Giuseppe's heirs, grew mainly in the USA, where
hats made in Alessandria were worn by Hollywood stars. An
image encapsulates it: Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in
the unforgettable last scene of "Casablanca". The relationship with
the world of cinema is a special one which was destined to last: as
well as Bogart and Bergman, Borsalinos were worn by Jean-Paul
Belmondo in "Breathless", Marcello Mastroianni in "8½" and Tony
Servillo in the 2014 Oscar-winning "The Great Beauty". Above all
the Alessandria brand allowed its name to be used in 2 cult films of
the Seventies: "Borsalino" and "Borsalino & Co". The idea was Alain
Delon's, and Borsalino accepted on condition that the company's
logo featured on the films posters.
And so Borsalino, which has gone through a cultural revolution,
has reached our era staying faithful to a production process
that has been handed down from generation to generation and
reflects the company's cultural values. Borsalino hats are still
made in Alessandria and combine craftsmanship with an industrial
approach: over fifty steps, done by hand over seven weeks, are
needed to make a felt hat; straw hats are hand woven, and some
hats can take up to six months to make.

designer italiani –Gae Aulenti, Mario Bellini, Andrea Branzi,
Achille Castiglioni, Ugo La Pietra, Vico Magistretti, Enzo Mari,
venire.
Collezione
The Borsalino Spring-Summer 2019 collection tells the younger
generations about the 1980s, a decade buzzing with creativity
and ideas that had a profound impact on everything that came
later. Borsalino uses the company's archives to reinterpret the
energy that coursed through those carefree, pleasure-seeking
years characterized by the rise of the personal computer, the first
avant-garde music videos – and the excesses of high fashion. It
was 1980, in fact, when Borsalino and the architecture magazine
Domus involved eleven of the most important Italian designers
in a project that saw each design a hat: Gae Aulenti, Mario
Bellini, Andrea Branzi, Achille Castiglioni, Ugo La Pietra, Vico
Magistretti, Enzo Mari, Alessandro Mendini, Paolo Portoghesi,
Roberto Sambonet, and Ettore Sottsass. Borsalino's artisans
transformed these proposals into prototypes for a 1981 exhibition
that anticipated the trends of the decade to come.
