Why GREEN is the colour of Groundhog

Concern for the “environment” is one of our core values. It’s an intrinsic part of our ethical,

socially responsible approach to doing business and our commitment to REDUCING our Global

Footprint.

“Groundhog” in 2011 is setting new standards in ecological footwear manufacturing.

“MINIMUM WASTE – MAXIMUM COMFORT”

Designed to provide exceptionally comfortable, durable, fashionable, and Eco friendly footwear

products. This is achieved through all aspects of sourcing from packaging, biodegradable and

recycled materials, construction and unique designs.

“NEW PACKAGING DESIGN” – see attached

Groundhog confirming our commitment to “Reducing our Global Footprint” by incorporating green in

our new fresh design packaging. Our boxes are made from recycled material and CARE is given to reduce

excessive wasteful packaging. Interior paper is non-bleached recycled paper. Form sticks are made from

recycled paper, as well as the plastic bags used to wrap our crepe soled shoes are biodegradable. To

further reduce our global footprint, interior stuffing paper is replaced with recycled paper foot forms.

Silica CRYSTALS for moisture absorption are REPLACED with an ORGANIC charcoal based “NANITE” which

performs the same function and when exposed to sunlight can be used as a FERTILIZER in house plants.

MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION

Spring 2011 will see Groundhog introduce New Eco friendly materials such as (Organically grown) Hemp –

Burlap which is hypo allergenic, mold resistant and helps stop bacteria growth. Colour dyes are vegetable

based adding to environmental friendly RENEWABLE crop for textile production.

UPPERS - beside our renewable textile program, Groundhog will be introducing to its semi vegetable

leather, “Fushion” soft semi vegetable leather with “vegetable dye colours”, as well New “Blazer” semi

vegetable, and sandal leather.

Our existing New Vermont semi vegetable leathers will see spring colours such as Lily Green and Beige

continue with the addition of “Tangerine”.

LINING – the lining material is a MICRO fibre made from BAMBOO, a renewable resource that is

harvested and replanted every four years. This material has great moisture wicking properties and is

breathable. Due to this feet are kept cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The material also

reduces bacterial fungus and odor and has anti micro biotic features.

REMOVABLE ORTHOTIC SOCK

Groundhog also offers products that have removable orthotic socks. These are combined with our unique

material, an under pad of natural latex that moulds to the shape of your foot creating a cushion foot bed.

These can be found in the “Tulip Collection” closed shoes.

ADHESIVES

We use water based cements instead of chemical based for all adhesion of both uppers and outsoles.

OUTSOLES

Natural crepe rubber is tapped from living rubber trees and then cured to make crepe unit soles. This

material is used on our TRAIL COLLECTION.

NEW GREENBELT COLLECTION features a new 25% recycled rubber content. The rubber also mixed with

straw fibre, being a renewable resource, our soft moulded contour sole is light and moulds to the foot for

ultimate comfort.

NEW SUNSET WEDGE SOLE has 2 1/8 inch wedge heel height (5 ½cm), made from 25% recycled rubber

content and coconut fibre. The insole has a soft cushion latex under pad from toe to heel.

KA SOLE is a unique “stitch out” process, two colour, light and flexible made from 25% recycled rubber

content and coconut fibre, with an air cushion coconut fibre foot bed.

GROUNDHOG NEW KA COLLECTIONS

Unique construction, stitched out process. Our stitched sole helps to avoid harmful glues. While providing

a light and flexible sole, with 25% recycled rubber content and coconut fibre, mixed in the compound.

New Groundhog KA process is unique, with that eco-comfort feature.

Inside the KA Sole is a cushion bed of thick soft coconut fibre “Foot bed”. This foot bed provides an Air

cushion pocket.

KA “Foot bed” reacts to your body heat, weight and movement, a comfort cushion is created and moulds

to the shape of your foot.

Whenever possible, material are sourced locally, thus reducing transport time and green house gases.

BUSINESS PRACTICES

Groundhog searches out partners who share the same concern for the environment. This is achieved

through investigation of the manufacturers who supply not only the raw materials but as also the final

point of manufacture. Proper attention must be paid not only to the process of manufacturing but also

the treatment of their employees. Shoes that are good for the environment are good for people.

February of 2009 saw the launch of our dedicated Groundhog website. This showcases the current

season’s collection and is also a portal to source Groundhog Retailers locations worldwide as well as

contact information for distributors worldwide.

The website also provides a platform for education and general knowledge about the Groundhog

philosophy, products, components and outlines the steps we are taking to be an environmentally

responsible brand.
