‘Preserving the traditional, facilitating the contemporary’

Hey!!! Spring is here and Summer is not too far behind (‘finally’ I hear you all say!). So it is with a warm heart that I welcome everyone to SAA-uk’s Spring/Summer 2010 Seasonal Brochure.

The SAA-uk Concert series (last Friday of the month) kicks off in April with a dance extravaganza in ‘Vaisakh’ (see p4) followed by two further musical evenings in May and June. As well as this, we are delighted to be launching a series of SAA-uk ‘Unplugged’ concerts at The Yoga Space in Leeds, so I hope you will join us in spending a few evenings in serene surroundings taking in great arts events. We are also delighted to be working with Opera North once again, so do come along after a day’s Saturday shopping and relax in the beautiful Howard Assembly Room to indulge in a Twilight Concert (see p5) which will take you from Leeds to the Valleys of Kashmir. For the globetrotters amongst you, there are a series of pit stops for you to consider as Samay and Milun head out on tour across the UK, offering great opportunities to enjoy the very best of new British music (see pages 8 & 9).

This spring, with the days getting longer, perhaps we can interest you and your families in a whole host of Music and Dance classes (see pages 12-14), which give you a chance to learn something new or to perfect your existing talents. So, even if it’s just to brush up your singing and dancing skills or to prepare for all those wedding invites you are bound to receive, you are more than welcome to join us!

In August, SAA-uk’s Annual Summer School ‘i SEE MUSIC’ is taking place, so do get the dates in your diaries and I look forward to seeing you there (Please see the facing page for more information).

Last but not least, you can unwind in the comfort of your own home by tuning in to our regular radio show, RAAG FEVER, each Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4pm. Since it first aired in March 2009, the show has gone from strength to strength providing listeners with a magical experience of traditional and contemporary South Asian music.

I hope you’ll agree, this season is going to be a truly wonderful experience for all…

‘i See Music’ is a week long Summer Activity that is open to children, young people, adults and families. Run annually since 1997, the Summer School is focused on providing musical engagement opportunities through which skills and knowledge in South Asian Classical music are developed.

This year, the theme will be to explore music through art as well as encouraging intergenerational learning and conversation that will empower both the children and their parents to ‘see music’. Parents will also have an opportunity to develop skills that they can utilise to take their Child’s learning beyond this activity

Through a 5,000 year old oral music tradition students will have the opportunity to learn the language of each instrument; be it the rhythmic patterns or the melodies, as well as gain historical and geographical knowledge and the development of mathematical skills using musical maths. In addition, participants will develop communication (verbal, listening and writing) skills, team work, memory, stamina, and social skills while having great fun! All this will lead to a better chance in life!

Featuring Sitar, Santoor, Tabla and Vocals.

Bringing to a close a 9-day festival of diverse arts, the Arun Ghosh Quartet promise to provide audiences with an uplifting experience. Using the spirit and language of jazz with the sounds and styles of hip-hop, Indian classical and folk, Western classical, rock, pop and avant-garde, ‘Arun’s music is full of lyrical melodies and searching harmonies, down to earth directness and psychedelic ambient introspection’.

His debut album “Northern Namaste” on camoci records released in 2008 received critical acclaim.

A fun packed celebration featuring Sitar, Santoor, Tabla, Bharatanatyam Dance, Giddha (Punjabi Folk Dance), Boliyan (Punjabi Folk Singing) and Bhangra Dance. Children, Young People and Adults learning with SAA-uk’s Arts Education Programme will be sharing their achievements as well as having a cup of Chai and a bite to eat while chatting after the show.

All are invited to share in the achievement of the students of SAA-uk’s weekly Adult Sitar and Tabla sessions, as well as enjoying a very informal recital by tutors Mohammed Abbas Assani and Ustaad Harjinderpal Singh. A cup of Chai, Pakora and Samosa or two will round the evening off nicely.

Literally translated as a ‘rhythmic instrumental musical session’, this concert promises to be a real treat for connoisseurs of the fine art of percussion. A Summer evening that will take the heat up an notch or two through the coming together of three of Europe’s leading percussionists. Shahbaz Hussain (Tabla), R.N Prakash (Mridangam) and R.R. Prathap (Ghatam) come together to enthral audiences with complex yet beautiful rhythmic improvisations held together by the melodic time keeping of ‘Lehra’.

Creative musicians Surmeet Singh (Sitar), Chris O’Malley (Guitar & Accordion), Upneet Singh (Tabla) and Sam Proctor (Fiddle and Bodhrán) of SAA-uk’s ‘Milun’ Project are on tour this Spring and Summer. They add seasonal warmth through their personalities, captured in each note and shared with the listener, resulting in new music that has touched the hearts of audiences. Simply through exploring the unique and common aspects of traditional Indian and Irish music, Milun conjure musical conversations that exchange traditional motifs in a ‘question and answer’ form and mix the haunting sounds of Indian Raaga with the pounding energy of Irish jigs and reels.

This talented collective of musicians are taking music into a timeless zone. At the heart of Samay is a unique blend, merging styles and instruments. The band features highly accomplished musicians from India and Europe, combining traditional forms with a range of contemporary infl uences to reinvent the sound of Indian music.

Samay includes three Leeds College of Music Alumni – Jesse Bannister, the leading Indian Classical Saxophonist in the UK, Bhupinder Singh Chaggar, Leeds’ brilliant Tabla Player and Italian born guitarist Giuliano Modarelli. They are joined by Soumik Datta, a charismatic London-based Sarod player and a guest Bassist.

Spring 2010 will see the launch of Samay’s 2nd Album and a tour that kicks off in London when the group add their special touch to the Alchemy Festival on 9th April 2010, plus, watch out for their return to Leeds on 7th May 2010 as they perform at Leeds College of Music as part of the Alumni Series.
