Getting Your House Ready for Spring

Your guide to getting Your landscaping in tip-top shapeBy rich Fisher

Doug Moore, who owns and operates new era land-scape & grounds Maintenance inc., (www.neweralgm.com) has been a professional landscaper for 28 years. Through his vast experience, he knows the rights and wrongs when it comes to spring cleaning your yard and performing simplistic landscaping tasks for your garden bed.

But they need to be done in proper succession. “There are things that any homeowner can do,” said Mr.

Moore, whose company services Mercer, Middlesex, somerset, Monmouth and Burlington counties. “But you just can’t go out there and start blowing stuff and raking stuff. everything has to be done in the right order or else you’re just going to make more work for yourself, or you could even defeat the whole purpose of what you’re trying to do.”

Thus, Mr. Moore shared the following tips to help get the outside of your home looking good for the summer.

Cleaning Up There are two very important steps that need to be done before

the blowers or rakes come out. The gutters must be cleaned, and any shrubs or bushes that you have must be trimmed.

“When you clean the gutters, you’re going to drop the leaves and they’ll all end up in the shrub bed,” Mr. Moore noted. “The same thing with your bushes. You need to trim them and prune back some branches on your dogwoods. get rid of the dead branches off your shrubs and trees. all that is going to fall into your garden or on the lawn. if you do that after you clean the yard, you’re going to have to go back and do it again.”

once that is completed, take a hand blower with enough power to start blowing the leaves and debris from your garden bed out onto the lawn and also blow down the entire lawn.

“it’s very important to get all your leaves and debris out of there,” Mr. Moore said. “The twigs, the sticks. get them all out. You can rake it, but your best result is to get a small hand blower. it doesn’t have to be a $500 blower or anything like that. But if you rake, the leaves get stuck underneath the stems and shrubs in the bed and sometimes they’re a pain in the neck to get out. to have a really nice, neat appearance invest in a blower if you don’t have one.”

Mr. Moore stressed that you should always start against the house and blow away from the building. if in the front yard, blow out to the street if your municipality collects leaves, twigs, etc. during the spring. if in the backyard, blow it into a corner, then put it on a tarp and either put it in the street or take to the local recycling/ecological center.

For those who have mulch in their garden beds, some pieces will get blown onto the lawn. as a money-saving tip, Mr. Moore suggests you blow them back into the bed. This way, when you buy new mulch, you won’t have to purchase as much since you already have a base with the old mulch.

“You also don’t want the mulch to stay on the grass because if you do seed your lawn it won’t grow in that area because the mulch is coloring it,” Mr. Moore said. “and when you mow your lawn, the mulch is woodchips. They’ll go flying all over the place and dull your blade out.”

once all this is accomplished, take some sort of flat shovel to edge the entire perimeter of the garden bed. it’s important to do this before applying any mulch.

“That makes it look really neat and keeps the mulch inside the bed so it doesn’t leak out onto the grass,” Mr. Moore said. “it will put a nice little edge.”

You are now ready for the next step.

Applying Mulch an important note here. For those who have locust trees

(which shed those helicopter leaves) or pin oaks in their yard, do not put down new mulch until those leaves drop completely.

“You can still do the cleaning so it looks good, but if you mulch the garden too early, those leaves will fall down into your mulch

and it will look (horrible) again,” Mr. Moore said.

if you’re ready to mulch, Mr. Moore suggests buying bags from a home and garden center. granted, ecological centers provide mulch for free, but it’s not the best quality and it will lose color earlier than treated mulch.

“it’s not good,” Mr. Moore said. “it’s thick and all it is, is trees (that are) cut up. That’s how mulch is made but a company re-fine combs it. They run it twice through a film machine and run a dye through it so it keeps its color. and it’s smaller, it’s not all choppy.

“The kind you get for free is just wood chips from what they cut down over the winter. it loses color quickly. You can find a shoe in there, a shirt. We found a fishing pole once. Maybe a hammer, beer bottles. and there haven’t really been any studies on it, but because it’s not treated, some people think it may have caused termites in their house.”

The Planting ProcessFor those with perennial

plants (that bloom yearly in the spring), mulch away. But if you’re putting in annuals that just bloom for the season, leave the spots bare where the planting will be done.

“You can put the mulch around the area when you’re done, but just make sure when you put flowers in (that) you’re planting them into the soil,” Mr. Moore said. “don’t use the mulch as the soil. it’s not really a good base. The mulch is going to suck the water up. Make sure the root system is planted into the topsoil, not into the mulch. after doing that you can spread some mulch just to cover the dirt up but keep it thin. You don’t want to suffocate the roots.”

When the annuals finally die, dig them up and put your new flowers in the same hole. Mr. Moore suggests you plant the roots about as deep as the pot that contained the plant. he also noted that any home and garden center employee should be able to give you tips on where to plant something, such as in a high density area, or in the shade.

The Human Elementlet’s face it, a lot of people don’t relish the thought of doing

all this work, but there are ways to make the time go by more comfortably.

“Just like you’re in the gym on the treadmill, use your smart phone with your itunes and put your headphones on,” Mr. Moore said, adding with a laugh. “and just have the kids keep bringing you beers and stuff. You’re probably going to be sweating off some of that winter fat anyway.”

also make sure you dress the part. dress in layers so you don’t need to keep changing clothes. as the day gets warmer, just keep shedding. also wear a pair of gloves, hat, sunglasses and a mask to protect yourself from the elements. The latter is especially true for allergy sufferers.

“When you’re blowing stuff, that dust will go all around and get in your eyes, up your nose,” Mr. Moore said. “You want to protect against that. and with allergies, this is probably the worst time of year with the pollen, so the mask will really help.”

so there you have it. do the right prep work and follow the right steps, and you too, can live the life of a landscaper.

Planting the seeds for a beautiful lawn

noW is the tiMe to get to Work on Making Your grass green and lush

By rich Fisher

his is it!This is the year you’re going to stop looking across the street

or next door and marvel at the neighbors’ lush green lawn; while they glare back at your brown, barren, dusty yard that’s a blight on the neighborhood.

The time is now to lay the foundation for a beautiful, grass-adorned property. The kind that will make you want to sit on the porch in June and suck a popsicle while you just lord over it as the sprinkler sways back and forth.

“if you start now, you’ll have a healthier lawn so you don’t have to apply as much fertilizer and things like that,” said don Bish, the second-generation owner of Bish sales & service, a tree and lawn care product store on route 31 north in pennington (bishsales.com, 609-737-0099). “The lawn will be healthy. in the summertime when it dries up a little bit you’re gonna have a stronger lawn, and it will stay green in the summer. or if we get a drought and it dries up, it has a better chance of coming back.”

in order to get those results, the preparation work should be done by the end of april. The first order of business is to clear all the remnants of fall and winter by raking up leaves, branches, twigs and any other debris that made its way onto the property.

“You should really get the yard cleaned up as soon as the weather gets nice if you want to put down fertilizer or mulch,” Mr. Bish said. “trying to get the leaves up from last fall is the biggest thing so you don’t choke the grass.”

once that is done, a quarter-inch thick layer of compost should be added to give the lawn an initial boost.

as you rake, you’ll find bare patches. remember where they are. once the lawn is cleared, go back and loosen the top two to four inches. level the soil with a garden rake and cover the area with a mixture of grass seed and either fertilizer or compost. keep the seeds in place by patting down with the flat end of the rake.

Cool Down with Ceiling FansBy keith loria

Who isn’t a fan of ceiling fans?ceiling fans are decorative, help keep you

comfortable all year round, and are a great way to make a home energy efficient.

They’re also fairly inexpensive, quiet and come in several styles, so there are fans out there that will fit your personal style. and if the day comes when you decide to sell your house, they’re appealing to prospective buyers. people who are looking to buy homes might want to change the kitchen or the paint color in the living room, but rarely do you hear someone say, “We have to get rid of those ceiling fans” when buying a house.

headed in the right directioneveryone knows that ceiling fans help

keep a house cool during the summer. on many days in the early summer, ceiling fans are all you need to keep a home comfortable. But even during the dog days, when the air conditioning is on, ceiling fans are working at circulating cool air, so you don’t need to run your ac as high as you would without a fan.

now, some people may not know about the switch that reverses the direction of the fan. during the summer, the fan is running counter-clockwise. Flip that switch, and the fan will run clockwise, so that the blades blow air toward the ceiling. That circulates the warm air from the ceiling into the room — remember heat rises — so the ceiling fan makes the most of that warm air.

of course, that doesn’t mean you can turn the thermostat off when it’s freezing outside, but it’s effective in making your home warmer, and can help save a little money off your energy bill.

Taking Care of FansThe most basic form of maintenance for

a ceiling fan is cleaning it. dust and dirt will collect on the edges and tops of the blade. in addition to looking unsightly, that dust reduces the airflow. cleaning with a damp cloth will do the trick. You also may want to consider using a cleaning product to add a little shine but don’t use anything that will damage the finish.

ceiling fans don’t require a whole lot of upkeep, but there are some things to look out for. inspect it every once in a while by running it and checking to see if it’s spinning smoothly, or wobbly. if it’s wobbly, it can shake lose, which makes it less effective and potentially dangerous if it were to fall. get a ladder and check the screws and light fixture.

some fans are billed as “maintenance-free” with sealed ball

bearings that don’t need to be oiled. others have a small oil hole above the motor. check your owner’s guide and see which kind you have, and if oil is needed, be sure to use the right kind and the right amount. Your guide will tell you what to do.

With that done, the next step is key, and that is to aerate the yard. aeration allows oxygen, water and other nutrients to reach the grass’ roots, and is one of the most positive steps you can take toward strengthening the lawn. since most folks don’t own an aerator, just head to any supply store and rent one for the day and spend the afternoon punching holes into your ground.

go over each area just once and, when completed, spread compost, fertilizer or peat moss over the yard. The fertilizer will be absorbed quickly through the aeration holes.

depending on the rain or lack thereof, it will soon come time to mow. Your optimal grass length should be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches, so the trick is to cut your grass as frequently as needed while not cutting more than one third of each blade. cutting with the mower blade high will produce a heartier lawn that is more adept at keeping weeds away, as well as making it less susceptible to heat and drought.

There are important things to note here, especially if you use a mulching mower.

“The biggest thing with mulching, you’ve gotta keep ahead of the lawn a little bit,” Mr. Bish said. “You can’t let it grow into a hay field and try to cut it one time. a lawn can only take a small amount if you’re using a mulching mower.

Continued from page 13

The right mowing technique can help keep your lawn looking its best. Photos by Metro Creative Services.

centraljersey.com

4056433.0401.HP.TGSGarages.indd

“Most people just think ‘Yeah, i’ll just mulch.’ But you can’t really do that unless you get ahead of the grass. it’s the same thing in the fall, people think they can run over leaves, and the leaves disappear. They’re not disappearing. They’re going down into the ground and your lawn can only tolerate a certain amount. if it gets too much, the lawn starts choking. You smother it.”

Mr. Bish recommends mowing around every four days in the rainy spring season, as the grass grows rapidly then. once the dry summer months arrive, it’s ok to mow once a week.

“it really all depends on how dry it is and how fast it’s growing,” he said.

another important detail has to do with the newer mowers and gas-powered trimmers.

“With the equipment you can’t take fuel lightly anymore,” Mr. Bish said. “You shouldn’t keep gas longer than a 30-day period of time. people get in trouble mixing up a can of gas and they think they can keep it all summer.”

he added that when purchasing gas, just buy smaller batches that will be used within 30 days.

“once you get the gas out of the pump, time it,” Mr. Bish said. “Most lawnmowers usually use a gallon of gas up to 30 days. But gas trimmers, with the ethanol and the fuel, if you leave it sit for certain periods it causes issues because of the moisture and the fuel.”

so there you have it. it’s not that complicated, it just takes the ambition to get out there and do it.

and then you can spend the rest of the spring and summer smiling at your beautiful lawn.
