Every spring, homeownershead outside to take stock of howthe winter treated their lawn.Homeowners in areas that experi-ence heavy snow or rainfall eachwinter likely do not look forwardto this inventory, fearful of whatanother harsh winter did to theirproperty. Fallen tree branches, frozen ground and winter windstorms can do a number on eventhe most well-manicured lawns, turning a summertime labor oflove into a nightmare.

While homeowners might notbe able to do anything about theweather, there are ways to revital-ize a lawn each spring. And youdon't have to be an accomplishedlandscaper to handle the task. Thefollowing tips can help bring yourluscious lawn back to life, helpingmake winter a distant memory.

* Remove all debris from youryard. Debris includes any trash inthe yard, wood, large roots, fallenbranches, and even stones. Thepresence of trash such as brokenglass or even faded paper productssuch as cups or bags is not onlyunsafe for the environment, but itcan prove harmful to anyone whomight be out in the yard once yourgrass grows, especially if youhave children. Oftentimes, winterwinds can blow trash from nearbygarbage cans across the yard, nomatter how neatly homeownersput out their trash.

• Smooth the soil. Once alldebris been removed, examine thesoil for any abnormalities thatmight need to be smoothed out.Use a spade or rake to smooth anyareas that aren't up to par. Nextyou'll want to loosen the soil aswell, something that can be donewith a garden rake. Any unsightlyareas, such as humps or ditches, should either be smoothed out orfilled in, depending on which isappropriate. This can be done withsome soil and should not provetoo costly.

• Consider seeding the lawn ifneed be. For lawns that took a par-ticularly harsh beating over thewinter, consider seeding the lawnto help revitalize it. When seedinga lawn, be sure you choose theright seeds. Different regionsrespond better to different types ofgrass. But don't be intimidated ifyou don't know the correct grassto choose. Simply ask a landscap-er or consult a lawn care specialistat a nearby home improvementcenter as to which type of grass isthe best fit your region and youryard.

When you're read to seed, theseed can be scattered by hand forsmaller yards, or with a dropspreader for larger lawns. Whenspreading with a drop spreader, use the suggested amount of seedon the bag (even a little less seedshould do the trick) and make sureyou spread out the rows evenly inthe same direction. Once you'vesowed the first part of your lawnin one direction, you can criss-cross back over that part at a 90-

degree angle, making sure youkeep equal distance and calibrateyour spreader at the same speed.

• Add mulch for aesthetic andpractical appeal. Moist helps thesoil, and can also add aestheticappeal to a lawn. Moist helps thesoil by allowing it to retain mois-ture, making it more conducive togrowing healthy grass. When lay-ing mulch down, keep the mulchat roughly a quarter-inch to ensureyour lawn will grow in nicely.

Top Home-repair blunders to avoid• Accepting the lowest bid. Smart homeowners shop around for every-

thing - including work done on their home. But accepting the lowest bidright off the bat to save money may cost you more in the long run. A lowbid certainly may be a great deal. But generally it could be a sign of aninexperienced contractor, or one who plans to use subpar materials orskimp on the job. Contractors will have similar prices. Shop based onexperience and recommendations, not price alone.

Revitalize Your Lawn After a Long Winter

Homeowners can revitalize their lawn after a long winter in anumber of ways.

Page 3: Spring Home Edition

Each year, thousands of familypets fall ill due to the presence of ill-ness caused by parasites, but suchproblems ca be treated or prevented.Heartworm, a slow-developing para-sitic infection, involves the infestationof a dog’s heart by up to hundreds oflong, thin, white worms that repro-duce and grow until a dog’s heart canno longer pump enough blood tokeep the dog alive. The infection cantake up to two years to show anyphysical signs, and even then it couldbe overlooked.“The first sign of heartworm dis-

ease is that there is no sign, the doglooks perfectly healthy,” said Dr.Debbie Chalker with GeorgetownAnimal Hospital. After that, usuallythe next sign is weight loss andcoughing. It can cause organ failureincluding heart, kidney, or liver fail-ure. Heartworms spread from dog todog by mosquitos. The heartwormreproduces through young wormsthat live in the blood stream. Whenbitten by the insect, some of theseyoung are then consumed and trans-ported by bites to healthy dogs.Eventually, the young worms growinto adults and the cycle begins anew.“We always have dogs tested, startingat five months or older. You can actu-ally kill the dog if you start it on cer-tain types of prevention before beingtested. Depending on the size of thedog and if you want flea protections,it runs from $5 to $20 a month.”The best step to take is prevention,

which can begin with puppies. It isestimated that 30% of dogs and catsin the area have heartworms. “If adog already has heartworm, theyneed to be treated with medicine totreat it. It can be complicated, theycan take a preventive medicine tokeep the dog from getting more untilit can be treated, but it won’t treatwhat’s already there. When a dog isdiagnosed with heartworm, the pro-cedure to eliminate the infection canbe time consuming and expensive.Typically, Chalker said that clearingup an infection takes a week of rest atthe vet’s office, plus an additional sixweeks of rest at home to prevent sec-ondary problems. The worm is actu-ally killed with medicine, so nosurgery is involved, but the proceduremust be followed up with preventa-tive medicine to keep the dog fromgetting heartworm in the future. “Ifthe dog is infected, it’s an injection inthe back a day for two days,” saidChalker. The six weeks of rest pre-vent pulmonary embolisms whichcould potentially kill the dog. Thenthey come back in two weeks afterthe treatment to start on prevention.”

What are heartworms?Heartworms are worms that live inthe heart and adjoining blood vessels.During the adult life cycle, the femaleproduce young called microfilariae.

These microfilariae live in the dog’sbloodstream.

How do dogs get heartworms?Heartworms are transmitted by mos-quitos. When a mosquito bites aninfected dog, it feeds on the bloodwhich contains microfilaria. After 10to 30 days in the mosquito’s system, themicrofilariae become infected lar-vae. When the mosquito bites ahealthy dog, the animal is infectedwith larvae which then grow intoadult heartworms.

What are the symptoms? By thetime symptoms appear, heartwormdisease has reached an advanced con-dition. It may take a number of years

for symptoms to develop. Coughing, difficulty in breathing, fatigue, andweight loss are all typical signs.Severely infected dogs may die sud-denly during exertion or excitement.

Can heartworms be prevented? After a dog is tested and found to

be negative, it can be started on a pre-ventative medication. This medica-tion keeps the dog form gettinginfected if it is bitten by mosquitoescarrying the heartworm larvae.Georgetown Animal Hospital hasbeen serving Georgetown and sur-rounding communities since 1952.For more information, call (937)378-6334.
