Tal R was born Tal Rosenzweig inTel Aviv in 1967 to a Danish motherand Czechoslovakian Jewish father.Raised in Denmark, his childhood wasdefined by his family’s split identity:the orderly Scandinavian society ofhis maternal side contrasted with hisfather’s experience as a Holocaustsurvivor. Tal’s traditional Hebrewname, which also means “number” inDanish, did not assist in hisacclimation, especially among school-aged peers. Drawing provided aneeded escape. As he has said: “Forme, drawing was the same asdreaming at night: you don’t decidewhat to dream about, you dreamabout what you need.” Tal’s self-identification as an outsider, caughtbetween two worlds, fueled a fertileartistic landscape of shifting realities. His unique vision eventually led him tothe Royal Danish Academy of FineArts, where his work caught the eyeof Louisiana Museum curator AndersKold.

The duality of Tal’s heritage isrecognized in his work, which offerssensations both celebratory andsinister. Saturated color is weightedby shadow; café and street scenes, festooned and radiant, aresimultaneously claustrophobic andlabyrinthine. His subject matter is

intentionally easy to describe, butmeaning, as in dreams, is enigmatic.Tal works with a variety of media—collage, sculpture, installation, painting—and intuitively culls imageryfrom diverse sources. (He cites theYiddish word kolbojnik—”leftovers”—asa loose definition for his process ofgathering inspiration.) Historical andart historical references abound:threads of Expressionism, Fauvism, and Symbolism run throughout, as donods to traditional Scandinavian art,Art Nouveau, and outsider orchildren’s art.

Tal R lives and works inCopenhagen. He has had soloexhibitions at Louisiana Museum forModerne Kunst, Denmark (2007),Kunsthalle Mannheim (2007),Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht(2008), Camden Arts Centre, London(2008), Cheim & Read, New York(2012), Kunsthalle Düsseldorf,Germany (2012), Museu Brasileiro daEscultura, São Paolo (2012), Galerieim Taxispalais, Innsbruck (2012),Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg,Wolfsburg, Germany (2013),Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich,(2013), ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum,Århus, Denmark (2013) and currentlyholds a Guest Professorship atKunstakademie Düsseldorf.
