Teachers’ Biographies

Sandy Bulgrin Sandy has been teaching basket weaving for over 28 years, having started by instructing 4-H

children, which she continues today. Sandy taught at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Sandy enjoys teaching at the museums in Racine and Kenosha. She taught at basket and gourd

events and retreats in Arkansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois, Missouri,

Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana: and on the high seas of the basket weaving cruise.

Sandy is also co-chair of the Basket Cruise.

Jeanne Dudley Jeanne taught 33 years at North Linn Comm. Schools. She has an MA in Fiber Arts and Art

Education and has been making brooms for the past 9 years in the traditional Ozark Shaker-style.

She has been a basket weaver for 29 years and teaching for the past 24 years. Many of her

weaving skills are incorporated into the making and teaching of brooms.

Jeanne offers basket weaving classes in her home studio and has taught broom making in IA,

AR, MO and WI.

Marilyn Parr Marilyn has been a basket weaver for over 35 years. She started out taking classes through a

Community Education Program and then later taught those classes to others. She attended

conventions as a student almost as long as she has been a weaver. Now, designing baskets has

become her ambition for the past 5 years. Marilyn also has a passion for quilting which

influenced some of her designs. She enjoys hunting as well which led to the incorporation of

antlers into her designs. Marilyn strives to design baskets that we can use daily or reflects the

love and respect she has for wildlife.

Marlys Sowers Marlys has been making baskets since 1985. She raises 13 different kinds of basket willow to

use in making rib-style, traditional-style, and many different shapes she incorporates into her

own designs. Marlys also makes several different kinds of Shaker, Appalachian, and Nantucket

baskets. Her husband Jeff Sowers makes her molds. She has demonstrated and taught at a

variety of conventions.
