Teacher Bios KARE GRIFFITH – Pleasant Lake, Indiana

Karen comes from the very northeast corner of Indiana where she teaches weekly weaving classes and works from her shop Farmer’s

Wives Basketry. She has taught at state events in Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Illinois, West Virginia, and Missouri as well as

at various guild sponsored events. Now retired from teaching in the public schools of Indiana, Karen enjoys reading, spending time

with grandchildren and weaving.

SADY BULGRI – Franksville, Wisconsin

Sandy has been teaching basket weaving for 17 years, having started with 4-H kids, which she still continues today. She teaches at

UW-Parkside, along with teaching at the local museums in Racine and Kenosha. She has also taught at the IL and MO gourd shows

plus the MO and MN basket convention and enjoys traveling and teaching basket weaving and gourds. She is also co-owner of

Basket Bits Magazine.

A SIDER – Waukesha, Wisconsin

Ann has been creating new baskets out of every day materials such as grapevine, clematis and iris leaves since 1991.

She has traveled as far as Thorne Bay, Alaska to collect red and yellow cedar and she has traveled to Death Valley and

even Copper Harbor where great resources for devils claw and birch bark exist. In combining birch bark, black ash, iris

leaves and beads she is able to conform them into unique miniature treasures. She believes in sharing her talents so

others can enjoy the process.

LOI LABAK - Rockford, Illinois

Loni has been weaving and beading for 15 years. She is the owner of Beads and Reeds located in Rockford, Illinois. Loni teaches

classes at her shop and conferences in Illinois and the surrounding area. Be sure to visit www.beadsandreeds.com

EILEE MIRSBERGER - East Troy, Wisconsin

After 30 years as a nurse, Eileen Mirsberger followed her passion and is now a full time basket weaver and teacher of basket

weaving. She is the author of 65 original basket patterns working primarily with rattan. For eight years she has been the owner of

East Troy Basketry Company where she sells a complete line of basket weaving materials and offers classes.

MARLYS SOWERS - Milo, Iowa I began making baskets in 1985 and teaching since 1986. I have always loved working with my hands and have a great love

for the outdoors. It seems making baskets ties the two together. I began weaving with reed, then black ash, pine needles, and any

other flexible plant that I could find in the woods

At our farm near Milo, I raise 13 different kinds of basket willows; so one gets great satisfaction in watching the willow

grow, harvesting it, and preparing it for weaving. With this willow, I make rib style , traditional style, and many different shapes that

are my own designs. I also make many different kinds of Nantucket, shaker and Appalachian styles of baskets.

This is a full time job for me so I sell many baskets and demonstrate at various shows during the year. My

husband and I have been demoing the art of old time basketmaking and woodworking at the Iowa State fair the past 18

years, the Franklin county fair for 16 years and many other one and two days demos throughout the Mid west. I teach

basketmaking classes at many conventions and special invitation classes throughout the US as well as at my studio

during the year.

I feel very blessed that people like and buy my work. Creating things with your hands keeps you in touch with

the world around you and the things that are really important in ones life.

with fiber.
