(NC) The ice storm that hit Southern Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimesmade it difficult for thousands to stay warm and safe this past holiday season. Some residents found refuge in warming centres, while others decided to hunker down in their cold and dark homes. A few lucky familieshuddled together into one room that thankfully had a fireplace or wood-burning stove. If the difficulties of the winter so far has you thinkingabout investing in a fireplace or wood-burning stove, the experts from Desjardins Insurance have some suggestions on how you can protect yourloved-ones and your home from damage and loss:Fire prevention:• Equip your home with smoke detectors. If they are well located and maintained, they can save your life. Clean them regularly and replace the batteries twice a year, typically in March and November when the clocks are reset. Also consider equipping your home with a fire alarm system connected to a remote monitoring center.

• Place one or more fire extinguishers in locations that all family members can easily access and be sure they know how to use them properly.

• Maintain your furnace and hot water heater on a regular basis. This should also include replacing your furnace filter every 90 days.

• Hire a professional to clean your furnace and/or fireplace chimney regularly to prevent creosote build-up. Also make sure that your flue vents are in good working order.

• If you regularly use a fireplace or stove, only burn well-seasoned wood

or special fire logs. Burning other material like cardboard, garbage and plastics will bring chemicals into your home and will create dangerous buildup in your chimney.

• When starting your fire, only use matches and open the damper. This should remain open until your fire is well out and cool.

• While your fire burns, put up a screen to keep kids and pets away from the flame, and to keep the logs and embers in the fireplace.

• Once your fire is out and cooled, keep the ashes in a metal container until they're cold enough to throw out.

CO2 Protection:• Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colourless gas that is produced by

burning fuels. Because it can't be detected by regular means, this gas can make you ill or can kill you.

• As evidenced by the recent ice storm, make sure your home is equipped with a carbon monoxide detector with a battery back-up. These alarms are affordable and can be found in most hardware stores.

• To prevent a CO2 leak, make sure that there is proper air circulation in your home, never use your BBQ inside and if your house has a connected garage, never run your car with the garage door closed.

Concrete Decks & Ramps?

Most people think that the only options for a deck for yourhouse is wood or composite materials. We all know thatwood will rot and has to be maintained and composite material can get very expensive. Concrete can be an affordable choice for your deck or porch project. The largestsingle piece that we can do is 8’ x 20’ , but we can put multiple sections together to come to just about any size.

Concrete is a very durable material and will last for yearsand you won’t have to replace boards or stain it every year. Also, with wrought iron or aluminum rails available for yourdeck you can be sitting out enjoying yourself in a very shorttime instead of working on your deck. If you are building a new house or considering replacing and existingdeck, give us a call to see how affordable a new concretedeck can be. The beauty is you only have to make a calland we do the rest, then you can cross that off your “to dolist” for years to come.

(NC) Everyday noise can wreak havoc on our inner peace. It can interrupt thoughts, our quiet conversations, and prevent us from truly relaxing. Furthermore, with televisions, home theatres, computers, video games, stereos and cell phones, our homes are also way too loud. So why nottransform the house into a quiet retreat by soundproofing certain rooms? When renovating, install insulation that will accomplish this for you. Usedin professional recording studios, stone-wool insulation is an excellentacoustic barrier that effectively absorbs sound. For home use, industry experts recommend a Roxul product called Safe n' Sound. It's an easy-to-install material designed for use inside walls, ceilings and floors. For the best soundproofing results, install the Safe n' Sound stone-woolmaterial in your media room, washrooms, laundry room, and in your floorjoists. By soundproofing a room it means that the sound is confined to that particular space, leaving the rest of your home undisturbed and your life, uninterrupted.

T’is the season for making changes in and around the home. The arrival ofwarmer weather renews homeowners' vigor for various home improvementprojects, and many have grand plans for interior and exterior renovations asthey prep their living spaces for comfort, beauty and entertaining opportunities. While there are many worthy projects to pursue, adding outdoor lighting to ahome can help increase its value and make the home safer and more attractivein the evening hours.According to the American Lighting Association, with a few updates to outsidelighting, families can make even better use of their homes at night. Adding out-door lighting is easier and less expensive than many homeowners may know, allowing them to transform an existing patio, deck or pool area into an enjoyablenighttime retreat. Pool parties, dinners on the patio or barbecues with neighborsbecome even more memorable when outdoor lighting is added or improved. But homeowners who want to install or upgrade their outdoor lighting shouldconsider the following tips, courtesy of ALA.• Improve navigation. Lighting is typically layered into a room or outdoor spacein three ways: overhead, task and ambient. Even outdoors, where there areno typical boundaries and borders, those three layers are necessary. Outdooroverhead lighting should improve visibility on steps, paths and walking surfaces, especially where there's a bend or an intersection. Task lighting can be usedaround cooking or gardening areas. Ambient light will cast a comforting glowaround any outdoor space.• Enhance security. To improve visibility and security, combine a motion detectorwith a sconce to illuminate dark corners or entryways. Be sure to aim lightsaway from the door to improve visibility. Lanterns on either side of the door cangive a home a warm, welcoming appearance and improve the safety of entry-ways.• Create outdoor rooms. Outdoor lighting at the borders of a space is a great

way to create barriers, both vertically and horizontally. Lights in atree create somethingakin to a chandelier hungin the middle of the sky, and even accent lights in the general area of the edgeof a patio, deck or porch will shine across the space and provide enough of acomfort level for people to understand where things are.• Reduce glare. Outdoor lighting that casts a glare can be blinding, as can lightthat's too bright. Lighting along paths should be cast downward, with fixturesthat are hooded. A variety of lighting options will create layers, allowing you toadd or subtract as necessary. Exterior-safe dimmers also can provide flexiblecontrol over the level of light, as can movable fixtures added to a patio or porch.• Add decorative elements. Just as arbors, pergolas, patios and other outdoor elements help to enhance the style of an outdoor space, so, too, canlighting contribute to a well-designed landscape. Lighting should play up decorative features of a yard and add the ambience that homeowners desire.Step lights make passage safe while also highlighting molding or trim details. An outdoor chandelier can make for a wonderful accent during dinnertime onthe deck or under a pergola. Patio lights provide atmosphere as well as illumination for cooking outside.• Enhance views from inside. Outdoor lighting can make the view from inside pleasant and enjoyable. Use a variety of lights, including spotlights ontrees, lights dotted along pathways and accent lights on unique landscape features, to create an idyllic landscape visible from inside the home.Outdoor lighting enhances functionality of yards and landscapes while makingsuch areas safer for homeowners and their guests once the sun has gonedown. (NC) With house prices on the rise, finishing a basement is the latest trendin the real estate market. More and more homeowners are enjoying theperks of additional living space, a reduction in heating and cooling costs,a healthier home – and if done right, a more desirable home when selling.A finished basement can be used for virtually anything and may offer multipurpose spaces the entire family can enjoy. Common uses includeadditional storage, media room, craft room, guest suite, workshop, or gym.A little extra room can give a growing family space to breathe and provideconvenience for everyday life. An unfinished basement can be a source of energy loss. By finishing yourbasement, you can expect to see savings on your heating and coolingcosts. Industry experts recommend finishing the space with the properframing, insulation and vapour barrier to guarantee a cozy and invitingspace. Insulation plays a key role in the comfort of your newly renovatedspace and although hidden within your walls, it will make sure your spacestays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Retailers suggest usinga stone wool insulation, such as Roxul. This recommendation is also fireresistant, water repellent, and is resistant to mold, mildew, rote and bacterial growth – making your space healthy and safe. An added benefit to expanding downstairs with a finished basement is theinstant marketability. Many buyers now demand a well-finished basementto give them extra space. Although you may not immediately recoup thefinancial costs prior to selling, you will stand out among the rest. www.newscanada.com

REGIONALSOLID WASTE

Landfill Gas Utilization Plant

FREDERICTON

FRSW Reaches Significant Green MilestoneWhat was considered a milestone initiative has justpassed a significant milestone of its own when it comesto producing energy.

Fredericton Region Solid Waste’s Landfill Gas Utilization Plant (LGUP) recently surpassed the 10-million kilowatts of power mark, a significantachievement, considering the energy producing projectat the landfill has been in operation for just over oneyear. “We are incredibly proud of the vision and foresight in initiating the original Landfill Gas Management Systemthat opened in 2006 to the natural evolution the state-of-the-art system has now reached,” said GordonWilson, the general manager of the FRSW, a divisionof Regional Service Commission 11. “We are a landfill operation that is creating a tremendousamount of efficiency when it comes to creating a truegreen energy producer that is both viable and sustainable to our economy and the region we serve.Reaching 10-million kilowatts of power in just over a yearis a remarkable achievement, one our communities shouldbe proud to be involved with.” As of early January, the FRSW’s landfill gas plant had produced 10,381,459 kilowatts of power. Those KWh is

supplied to NB Power’s grid following a 20-year dealwith the provincial entity signed in December, 2012. The average household in the Fredericton region wouldconsume approximately 20 to 25 KWh per day orroughly 9,125 KWh a year. The FRSW has essentially affected just over 1,240

homes by supplying power on the NB Power grid. “To think the FRSW has produced this energy through decomposing garbage in our landfill to help heat andlight over 1,200 homes is an outstanding achievement,”said Wilson. “We have had so much community supportin our project and now, the production numbers showthat support was warranted. We are certainly continuingour efforts to be an industry leader with our initiatives.” Two power generators are now capturing methane gasproduced from decomposing garbage in the landfill andconverting it into energy. Turning solid waste into energy was a seven-year project for FRSW, which started with the opening of theLandfill Gas Management System in 2006, a 40-footcylinder that was destroying Greenhouse Gas but flaring off the energy in what was called Phase I of gasutilization. That energy is now harnessed with the evolution of the

system, a state of the art project and a key element ofbusiness for the FRSW. “What we have accomplished is benefiting so many inthe region and beyond,” said Wilson. “We’ve turnedwaste into a green and revenue-producing product. We’re producing green energy and eliminating approximately 45,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases ayear from the air.” The initial phase of the project began in December of2006. This acclaimed project significantly reducedodours associated with methane and other trace gasesgenerated from decomposing garbage that affects alllandfills. Phase II took the project a step further by using generators to create power with the gas rather than destroying it with the flare. The cost of Phase I was $2-million. Phase II requiredan additional $3.7 million investment by the former Fredericton Region Solid Waste Commission (nowFRSW) without government grants or subsidies. Wilson said producing power through the LGUP is the realization of years of hard work and dedication by thecommission and its staff. “We were tasked with creating an energy-producing

project. It was an ambitious goal and one we’re veryproud to have achieved for both economic and environmental reasons,” Wilson said. “We’re producinggreen energy and maintaining our commitment to theenvironment while being economically sustainable. OurLandfill Gas Utilization Plant has between 50 to 70years of longevity which means it will be a tremendousasset for our communities for decades to come.” The FRSW, New Brunswick’s first modern sanitarylandfill when it opened its doors in 1986, has evolvedinto a business in the region. Energy production is thelatest enterprise at the FRSW along with its landfill operations, Household Hazardous Waste, recycling atits Materials Recovery Facility and construction and demolition.

Daikin's heat pump systems not only look and operate differently, they make a significant difference in the amount of energy consumed whenheating and cooling your home. In fact, a Daikin system operates up to 30% more efficiently than theconventional systems commonly used in NorthAmerican homes. According to the U.S Department of Energy, as much as half of the energyused in your home goes to heating and cooling. Somaking smart decisions about your home's heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system hasa big effect on your utility bills and your comfort.

A Comfortable Fit for Almost any HomeA Daikin system gives homeowners control to

preserve the integrity of your home’s design – newor renovated, contemporary or historic. No matter the size or shape of your home, Daikin's modular design, offers the flexibility you need to customizea heating and cooling solution that fits comfortably into your space. The Daikin heat pump system includes the choice of ducted or duct-free indoorfan coils matched with a single outdoor unit. There are a wide variety of ducted or duct-free styles that can be mounted on the ceiling, the wall, and the

floor or installed more traditionally, using ductwork hidden in the ceiling or behind walls. Youcan even build a system using a combinationof different types indoor fan coils. For example, you may choose the ducted option for the general living areas in yourhome, and opt for a wall mounted units inrooms which are used less throughout the day.

With a Daikin system you can create manycomfortable zones. The common central heat-ing and cooling solution that comprises of aheat pump or air conditioner and furnace combination offer limited zoning options.

A Daikin system, on the other hand, precisely controls the temperature of separaterooms that are in use more often as well asrooms not always occupied. This solution

prevents over cooling or over heating unused areas.Another difference you will notice about Daikin is how little you notice it at all. Our indoor units and outdoor units have sound-reducing features and

the sound levels reached by the Daikin system can be compared to the sound level of rustling leaves.

A Daikin System Maintains Comfort. -- Automatically

Most of Daikin's products are heat pumps. Aheat pump provides year-round climate controlfor your home by supplying heat in the winterand cooling in the summer. Our difference is that our heat pumps featurean inverter compressor. The speed of the compressor is controlled by the capacityneeded to cool down or heat up a room. Conventional systems reach a set temperature and then shut themselves off.The Daikin system runs at a constant, energy-conserving level and varies the speedof its motor depending on the conditions. Thatway, it maintains temperatures close to setpoint and helps eliminate humidity. This constant monitoring keeps you comfortable. It also cuts down on energy consumption which is good for the earth and good for your wallet.

At Air Tech Ventilation , we clean the flammable lint, birdnests, and debris from your dryer vent. Dryer vent cleaningperformed on a regular basis assures optimum operation andspeedy drying time. In addition, dryer vent cleaning offers thefollowing benefits:1. Save money on gas and electric bills2. Prevents wear on clothing caused by excessive

drying times3. Stops excess wear and tear on the dryer caused by

overheating and extended use4. Will prevent an unnecessary service call from an

appliance repairman, when only the dryer vent is in need of cleaning

Our professionals also perform commercial dryer vent cleaning.

Most Homeowners Do Not Realize ThatDryer Vents Need To Be CleanedA homeowner will notice thatclothes take longer than usualto dry. They usually think thattheir dryer is just getting old. However, most of the time theproblem is that the dryer vent ispartially or completely clogged.

How Do You Know If You Need Your Dryer VentTo Be Cleaned?Well if your dryer is connected to an exterior wall, then youprobably are not going to have much of a problem. To check, turn the dryer on and look where the hose connects to theexterior wall. Go on the roof to where the dryer vent gooseneck is and feel the exterior dryer vent . There shouldbe a forceful breeze coming from the vent. If there isn't, thenthe hose behind the dryer is probably kinked or clogged. Ahomeowner can usually clean this, however, some may say,"Hey, wait. My dryer isn't connected to an exterior wall. It goesbehind my dryer and vents to the roof, or who knows where?"Bingo, you now know the dryer vent needs to be cleaned.Dryer vent cleaning improves the safety and efficiency of yourdryer installation. As dryer vents become filled with lint andother debris, drying time increases and can cause the dryeritself to overheat. This increases energy consumption sincethe dryer has to run longer to dry your clothes and can alsocause fires in the dryer or the dryer duct.If you have noticed that your dryer is running longer than itused to you may be in need of dyer vent cleaning. Some dryervents are relatively short and straight and can be cleanedeasily by the homeowner, but others aren't that easy and mayrequire the use of special tools and equipment. Air Tech Ventilation has tools specifically designed for dryer ventcleaning and with these tools we are able to do a thorough

job of cleaning even the most difficult installations. Whiledryer vents are routinely blocked with lint, animal nesting isalso another frequent cause of dryer vent blockage and ourequipment allows us to remove these blockages as well. Another problem created by blocked dryer vents serving gasdryers is the possibility of carbon monoxide seepage intoyour home. If the dryer is not exhausting properly to the outdoors, CO can back up into the home. We measure theduct back pressure before and after the dryer vent cleaningprocess to determine the effectiveness of the cleaning. Thisalso helps insure your dryer duct installation does not exceedrecommended limits.

If I a dime for every time I am told “I don’t want chlorine in mypool or hot tub”, I would be much wealthier. This is very good example of sales and marketing. The big swimming pool equipment manufacturers have successfully marketed these saltwater chlorine generators as “all you need to keep your poolclean”. Don’t get me wrong, these do work for a lot of people andsales have taken off in the past decade but there are some itemsnot mentioned in the glossy ads that pool owners should knowbefore investing a lot of money on a salt system.

First and foremost, you are still sanitizing your pool withchlorine. Salt on its own has never killed bacteria. You are producing your own chlorine. The salt you pour into yourpool(sodium) flows through a salt cell which uses electrolysis tobreak the dissolved salt down resulting in a reaction that produces hypochloris acid. What you are left with is sodium hypochloritealso known as bleach. Another topic that is brought up is “the salt generator is all I need” . Salt or mineral pools need to be stabilizedwith cyanuric acid to protect the chlorine from the sun’s UV rays. They also need their water chemistry checked periodically. Forexample, sodium hypo chloride has a high PH factor and high PH makes chlorine less effective. Most users of these systems saytheir pool does not smell like chlorine, for that I will tell you, free chlorine does not smell strong, it is when chlorine gets contaminatedby body oil, debris, among other things, this creates chloramines. It is the chloramines that create the offensive odor. But with thecell constantly creating more free chlorine this problem isn’t as noticeable. The last point that I need to mention is that salt generatorsaren’t going to save you any money. The cell is a similar to a light bulb and we all know bulbs burn out. These cells are made tomanufacture only so many pounds of chlorine before they burn out and that is if they are routinely serviced to the manufacturesspecifications. Also, your pool and equipment needs to be protected from the saline water, no pool manufacturer warrantsdamage done by salt water or the electrolosis.

In closing, salt water pools feel good on your skin; theelectrolysis softens the water by reducing the alkali minerals in thewater. For some who have skin sensitivities this softening mayhelp your issues. Salt pools are less expensive to maintain duringthe season but with its high initial investment and replacementcosts it is debatable if it will actually save you money in the end. This article is intended to help people make informed decisions. We just want consumers to know exactly they are buying and nothave any false notions on what it will and will not do.
