Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley Celebrates Black History Month!

In January, PPMHV advocates joined hundreds of activists from across New York for the Day of Action in Albany. We spoke directly with legislators and legislative staff about prioritizing access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare and standing up for women’s rights. The Day of Action gave attendees the opportunity to directly fight for reproductive justice in New York State and see family planning advocacy in action as the Comprehensive Contraceptive Coverage Act (CCCA) passed the NYS Assembly.

Interesting Gifts

Congratulations to Lana Williams-Scott, Diversity Initiatives Coordinator, for receiving the 2016 Black Achiever’s Award from Beulah Baptist Church, Poughkeepsie.

A Tale of Two GiftsPPMHV received two amazing gifts this year at completely different ends of the spectrum. Our first gift was from a donor who said she wanted to “Stand with Planned Parenthood” and would send a gift for #Giving Tuesday in December to meet the match that was being offered that day. This donor, who had sent us $50 in the past, sent us $1,000. Incredible! Then a gift came in that was three new postage stamps. The donor gave us a small gift last year. Her life is tough and she doesn’t have much but she too wanted to “Stand with Planned Parenthood.” All she had was stamps and that’s what she sent. She wanted us to send our fundraising appeal to three more people to spread the word and encourage more people to “Stand with Planned Parenthood.”

Good Things Come in ThreesWhat do a bake sale, a musical event and a crafter fair have in common? All three were events that were organized for Planned Parenthood by individuals who wanted to help us in any way they could! The bake sale at Bard College was organized by a proactive student who wanted to make a difference and support an organization she believed in. The musical event, “Not Your Momma’s Holiday Concert” featured 8 musicians playing

holiday tunes at Dogwood in Beacon. An old church basket was passed around and filled with donations. The organizer, Sara Milonovich dropped off the check and spoke about her passion for our mission. The crafter fair in Woodstock, known as Ladypalooza Holiday Faire, was organized by a group known as Women Empowering Women. What better way to support women in the Hudson Valley than to have a fundraiser for PPMHV? All three events raised approximately $2,500. THANKS TO ALL!
