Explorer BREWING (CONTRACTS ONLY)

RGT Planet BREWING, FEED AND EXPORT

The demand for Explorer grown in the UK has developed rapidly in recent years. It is a specialist variety that is grown on contract for the production of Budweiser. Specific grain characteristics with high Free Amino Nitrogen (FAN) and high Diastatic Power (DP). This ideally suits the production processes for this globally renowned beer. A collaboration between Agrii, Glencore, Crisp Maltings and Budweiser will secure their malting requirements for the foreseeable future.

Attractive premiums are being paid for a 1.8-1.9% N specification with flexible movement terms. In recent years a premium above Propino has been paid. Speak to your local agronomist for the latest terms. Historically limited to contracts initially in the South and East Midlands, it may expand to other areas as production increases. Suitable for a range of soil types, but entirely suitable for heavier land where grain nitrogen tends to be higher. A continental-type with very fast speed of development and must not be sown before March. Depending on yield and soil mineral N, apply typically 120-150 kg/ha nitrogen; 60 kg in the seedbed with the remainder at GS14 or consider holding back 30-40 kg/ha to post GS39.

Agrii trials showed similar performance to Propino over three years and higher untreated yields. Similar in height to Propino, good lodging resistance and very early maturity making it an ideal entry for oilseed rape. To avoid Brackling give priority at harvest ahead of other varieties. Sound disease resistance scores for Brown Rust and Mildew but Rhynchosporium needs attention. It is a good variety for a grower who is looking to open up their rotation and get the benefits from spring cropping.

Planet sits at the top of the AHDB 2017 Recommended List and was the biggest selling variety in the spring of 2017. Buy back contracts are available with UK end users and coupled with the very high yields it does offer both feed and malting growers a good option.

Suitable for all regions of the UK, consistent across soil types and relatively straight forward to manage. Propino-like grain quality but relatively low protein content due to its high yield and inevitable protein dilution. Will require careful nitrogen management to ensure that the relevant nitrogen contents, required for brewing, are met. Medium height, moderately stiff straw, excellent Brackling resistance and early ripening.

High untreated yields reflect the good all round disease resistance with excellent Mildew resistance but weaker on Brown Rust compared with Propino. It also has one of the best scores for Ramularia.

Propino BREWING AND EXPORT

KWS Irina GROUP 2, BREWING AND EXPORT

Still the benchmark malting variety for England and consequently has been the most popular variety for the pure malting barley grower. Widely accepted by both domestic and continental maltsters as a brewing barley. RGT Planet and Laureate consistently out-perform it on both treated and untreated yields but it remains a conservative market and end users will continue to demand it for several years to come. With a buoyant export market this variety is most suitable for barley growers south of the M4.

Proven to be very consistent across regions and years and farmers know how to grow it. It gives its best performance on medium soils. Contracts are usually for the higher nitrogen specification of max 1.85% N. Grain nitrogen levels in Propino are typically between those of Optic and NFC Tipple. In most situations, it needs 120-150 kg/ha nitrogen applying 25% when tramlines are visible and 75% at GS13. Good grain characteristics and very low screenings. Medium tall with good straw strength and excellent Brackling resistance.

Reasonably high untreated yields are supported by good underlying disease resistance. It has good resistance to Rhynchosporium but is weak relative to other varieties on Mildew and the less common Yellow Rust. Growers who are new to growing spring barley will find Propino to be a very stable and straightforward variety to grow.

After a slightly uncertain start Irina has found a place in the market for both the malting and the feed markets. A reasonable alternative to Propino, Laureate and Planet with similar premiums into harvest 2018 UK malting markets. Irina now seems to be accepted both home and abroad and agronomically it offers some advantages to its competitors.

Harvest 2017 has proven to be a testing year for standing power for many spring barley varieties and it is clear that Irina is the stiffest (and shortest) variety in the market – this was confirmed in Agrii’s own trials. It also has the best rating on the 2017 list for Brackling.

Its yield is comparable with Laureate and Planet but specific weight is generally a little lower. Rhynchosporium resistance is also a little lower than these two. But the standing power and yield do make it a good alternative for feed growers particularly those with exposed fields or fertile conditions.

Laureate BREWING, DISTILLING, EXPORT AND FEED

Sangria POTENTIAL BREWING

Laureate now carries IBD Approval for Brewing and Distilling, so should find favour in both the English and Scottish end markets. Demand is expected to increase in both areas for harvest 2018.

It has produced yields comparable with RGT Planet with slightly better results in the East and the North/Scotland which are the main malting areas. Specific weight is a little lower than RGT Planet.

Disease resistance is very good, with no obvious weaknesses. Scores for Brown Rust and Rhynchosporium are slightly better than Planet and Propino. Straw strength however is a little lower.

Demand for the variety in Scotland as a possible replacement for Concerto is likely to mean that stocks could get short in spring 2018.

Bred by Nordsaat, Germany and marketed by Elsoms Seeds in the UK, Sangria is a new introduction to the UK undergoing malting evaluation.

Yields to date have been in excess of Propino with a higher specific weight and good screenings. In Agrii trials, yields were within 2% of RGT Planet and 4% above Propino.

Standing ability was similar to RGT Planet but with slightly taller straw and similar maturity.

Good resistance to Mildew, with average scores for Rhynchosporium, Brown Rust and Ramularia.

Hacker FEED

A good choice for livestock farmers who want to combine consistently high yields of grain with plenty of straw. One of two varieties with the highest straw yields from trials carried out by the Department of Agriculture in Northern Ireland. Equally it has one of the highest specific weights on the list at 69.7 kg/hl and one of the lowest screening losses. Its best performance has been in the West but has also found favour in the North.

Medium height, one of the stiffest and excellent Brackling resistance too. All highly desirable characteristics given the quantity of straw and to top it off it also has early maturity.

Good Mildew resistance but otherwise average and its Rhynchosporium resistance is slightly weaker than the Recommended List suggests. Monitor disease development and plan to spray it.

Spring B

arley: Malting

Waggon FEED

Very popular on-farm for its consistent yields though it now lags behind the more recent varieties. Good straw characteristics, reasonable specific weight and screenings.

Of medium height with moderately good stem stiffness and excellent Brackling resistance too. It is still one of the earliest varieties to mature.

One the best ratings against Ramularia but weak against Rhynchosporium, particularly if wet conditions persist.

Aspen SPRING OATS

Canyon SPRING OATS

The highest yielding oat variety on the 2017 AHDB Recommended List and the most popular variety in the North of England and Scotland. Good specific weight, average kernel content and relatively low screenings.

Slightly shorter than average and of average straw strength. Maturity is slightly earlier than average.

With average scores for both Mildew and Crown Rust, Aspen offers a decent agronomic profile.

A popular variety at both ends of the country. Average yields but a very consistent performer producing grain of good specific weight but slightly lower than average kernel content.

Tall straw of average strength, Canyon is slightly earlier to mature than average, although there is little to choose between most varieties.

Very good Mildew resistance and average Crown Rust resistance.

Breeder: Bauer, Germany | UK Agent: Senova

Breeder: Nordsaat, Germany | UK Agent: Saaten Union UK

WPB Elyann SPRING OATS

A new variety to the market that has attracted a fair bit of interest from the end users due to its very high kernel content.

Yield to date has been around control levels and therefore similar to Canyon. There is production in both England and Scotland so there will be a good chance for end users to see the variety after harvest 2018.

Slightly shorter than average but straw strength has been only moderate in Agrii trials and therefore the variety will need a full PGR programme. Maturity is similar to Aspen.

Decent Mildew resistance and provisional figures show an average or better Crown Rust resistance.

Spring Naked Oats As the name implies, naked oats naturally thresh free from the husk during harvest. This natural groat is nutrient dense with high digestible energy, and gives itself into a range of different sectors demonstrating the versatility and respect this crop has gained.

Our naked oats are marketed under our Superioats brand into our various end-users. They are used as a whole grain, for flaking, malting and in animal feeds. Industries include wild bird food, dog food, poultry, and horses with its versatility reaching as far as cosmetics.

We have looked into improving agronomic performance through Agrii trials, aiming at increasing on-farm gross margins. In addition our Agrii blackgrass trials at Stow Longa have shown that spring oats, including our Superioats, are a great option for grass weed control situations. With a strong demand that outweighs current supply, our Superioats contract offers attractive premiums over AHDB feed wheat.

Breeder: Selgen, Czechia | UK Agent: Cope Seeds

LennonSPRING NAKED OAT

A spring naked oat variety with high oil content. Lennon is shorter than most conventional spring oats with better standing power than its predecessor, Bullion. Lennon has a decent disease resistance package, particularly on Crown Rust, with manageable Mildew.

OliverSPRING NAKED OAT

A spring naked oat that has produced slightly higher yields than Lennon in Agrii trials with better specific weight; although this is limited data. Taller than Lennon with slightly weaker straw, growers need to keep on top of PGRs. Crown Rust too needs to be kept on top of, however, Mildew is manageable.

Mulika GROUP 1, BREAD

KWS Chilham GROUP 2, BREAD

Remains the leading spring wheat and the only Group 1. Consistent good yields with excellent grain quality. It attracts full Group 1 premiums and is widely accepted by the millers. Suitable for all regions and soil types. Has proven itself in the autumn on medium and lighter soils in the traditional slot after roots or true spring drilling. Sow from the end of October through to mid-April.

It produces tall straw that is very characteristic of spring wheat. There is no official lodging rating on the spring list but Agrii data shows you need a good PGR programme on autumn drilled crops as standard especially those on fertile land.

Adopt a comprehensive approach to control both Septoria tritici and Brown Rust and, as for all quality wheats, apply an ear spray to control Fusarium. Midge resistance is a very useful attribute.

A new introduction and one that should deliver higher yields than Mulika in both the late autumn and spring slots. Yield has been as good as any spring wheat in the late autumn slot and will be a good choice for those looking for an alternative to Mulika. Good grain characters but will not fetch the same premiums as Mulika as it is classified as a Group 2 variety by NABIM.

Slightly later to mature than Mulika and although a bit stiffer, will need a good PGR programme from a late autumn drilling.

Very similar to Mulika for disease resistance and on Agrii data better for Yellow Rust than KWS Cochise, which is also new into the market. Brown Rust though needs watching. Midge resistant.

KWS Kilburn GROUP 4

Kilburn has been in the market for a couple of years now and is the second most popular variety behind Mulika. Certainly capable of high yields for a spring wheat it seems to be best suited to the traditional spring drilling window. It is a hard feed wheat but does produce grain of a good Hagberg, specific weight and protein level.

Slightly later to mature than other spring wheats and also a bit taller so will need a good management programme.

Disease scores are pretty good with decent resistance to Yellow and Brown Rust and also Septoria. But it is not Midge resistant unlike Mulika and KWS Chilham.

GB Seeds and niche buy backsWith on-farm gross margins becoming ever increasingly put under pressure, farmers are on the lookout for crops that command additional premiums.

Covering all aspects of the crop and focusing on the entire chain from seed production to the development of the end markets. They work closely with end users and plant breeders to enhance and raise the profile of this high value quality product.

Due to the nature of these markets, there are limitations on how much area can be contracted.

Please speak with a member of the team at GB Seeds on 01284 729200 or your local Agrii agronomist for details and contract availability.

GB Seeds is the specialist seed business of Agrii and offers a range of buy back opportunities on various niche crops. These are available throughout the year and include Naked Oats, Linseed, Maple Peas, Yellow Peas, Tic Beans, Millet and Canary seed; subject to seed availability.

Most of these are used for their own consumption through the processing plant at Ingham, near Bury St Edmunds, alongside the extensive range of other products imported from warmer climes.

The Naked Oats are grown exclusively on contract for Agrii/GB Seeds, and are used in multiple sectors. GB Seeds have been at the forefront of naked oats in the UK for many years.

Seed Treatments Spring 2018NEW: i-Man (Manganese) for wheat, barley, oats and rye

A formulation developed exclusively for Agrii with a dual mode of action. It both penetrates the seed coat and is taken up by roots leading to increased manganese uptake compared with other formulations. Agrii trials have shown consistent yield benefits over existing manganese treatments. It should be used as standard in high pH, high/low organic matter soils, acid sands, poorly drained clays, ploughed in pasture, clays with high lime content and in second wheat situations.

NEW: Zax (Zinc) for wheat, barleyand oats

Zinc is an essential micronutrient for optimising growth and output. Zinc deficiency can be determined accurately by soil analysis. Zax provides a source of zinc from germination onwards and complements follow up foliar sprays. It has been tested in Agrii’s R&D programme for over two years and is an exclusive product. Winter wheat is the most responsive crop followed by winter barley, spring barley and then oats.

NEW: AgNition (Copper) for wheat, barley and oats

Copper deficiency is significant in Scotland where 30% cereal acreage is affected. It is also widespread in England and Wales but at lower levels (5% area affected). Deficiency is best determined by soil analysis and occurs at levels below 1.6ppm. AgNition provides a ready source of copper to the emerging seedling and it is compatible with other seed treatment products in Agrii’s range. Spring barley is the most sensitive crop followed by winter barley, oats and then winter wheat.

Redigo Pro (prothioconazole +tebuconazole) for spring barley, oats, wheat & rye

Redigo Pro is a proven combination of two triazoles that optimise the control of Fusarium, Loose Smut, Bunt and Blue Moulds and reduces the germination capacity of Ergot. It is widely compatible with other treatments.

Austral Plus (tefluthrin + fludioxonil) for wheat, barley and oats

It provides a zone of protection around the seed which repels or kills wheat bulb fly or wireworm that attack crops below ground level. Attacks that occur at the soil surface may not be prevented. It also controls most seed-borne diseases.

Signal (cypermethrin) for wheatand barley

An alternative to Austral Plus that can be co-applied with other single purpose treatments.

Designed to maximise the nutrient efficacy in the soil environment. Trials have demonstrated greater root mass and greater uniformity of establishment often leading to improved yields in difficult conditions. The specially formulated patented plant metabolite PGA (pyro-glutamic acid) ensures that the plant has an additional source of phosphorus through the critical period of the first 5 to 6 weeks of crop establishment.

Gra

in Marketing your Spring Cereals through AgriiMaximise your return. Minimise your risk.Agrii recognise that marketing crops is the most important thing that a farmer does and in order to assist with this process we have selected a number of Grain Partners to work with to give the best returns with minimal risk.

A Marketing Contract through Agrii will:

Offer only well-established varieties or those that have been through our trials network to check they are suitable and if grown to protocol likely to reach the contract specification.

Where possible be contracted with local consumers to minimise haulage and retain the value for the farmer.

Produce specific husbandry guidelines designed to optimise yield and quality.

Offer flexible contracting plans to manage risk, giving access to premiums and the ability to fix base prices and movement period.

Deliver the ability to plan for harvest movement or maximise return by marketing from your store over an extended period.

Manage your cash-flow with flexible movement and payment schemes.

Spring Oats The area planted to spring oats has increased rapidly as improved varieties bring increased returns, weed control options are lost to the winter oat crop and growers unable to establish oilseed rape due to flea beetle pressure seek an alternative break crop.

Conventional Oats There is a finite market for spring oats in the UK as oat millers prefer the kernel content and hullability of the winter oat Mascani and oat exports tend to be at a discount due to the high costs of transporting such a bulky crop. Agrii, through our Grain Partners Glencore, contract directly with all of the UK oat millers.

For a more personalised approach to your crop marketing make sure you talk to one of our agronomists or our Crop Marketing Department.

Naked Oats The market for this high value crop is growing as compounders, pet and fish food manufacturers and breakfast cereal producers all take a renewed interest in the crop. Agrii are testing new improved varieties from around the world as well as developing new oat husbandry guidelines to boost the output of the crop.

Grain

Spring BarleyWith the movement to more spring cropping and spring barley in particular a marketing contract which identifies a market and locks in a premium is more important than it has ever been. With areas planted exceeding domestic demand, in a good quality harvest, malting quality barley will be sold as feed if not contracted forward. Agrii offer minimum premiums and the ability to fix the feed base price as a standard contract format and work with growers to fix base prices at advantageous levels and lock into premiums when the harvest quality is known.

Spring WheatThe decision to sow a winter type in the spring or go for dedicated spring wheat can be a complicated one. Considerations such as the three crop rule, restrictions on herbicide and seed treatment choices and also whether a spring sown type will be considered as milling, even if it has a Group 1 or 2 rating may impact on choice. Some mills, because of the relatively low volumes offered and the variable quality of some varieties may not buy Group 1 spring wheat, so it is important, if gaining a premium is a key part of your decision making, to ensure you have a premium contracted before planting.

Spring RyeRye is the fastest growing small grained cereal in the spring, so a crop of spring rye can be a valuable producer of bulk for methane production. There are very few varieties and seed supply is normally tight. Spring rye is not normally contracted for grain production in the UK however GB Seeds have a small requirement annually, purchased on sample.

Agrii Grain Partners In order to support our farmer customers and maximise returns through grain sales as well as agronomy Agrii has an established partnership with Glencore, and our own in-house grain company which deals in speciality crops, GB Seeds.

Glencore In England and Wales, Agrii works in partnership with Glencore Agriculture, the largest publicly quoted trader and consumer of cereals, pulses and oilseeds in the world.

Glencore have extensive links with maltsters both in the UK and Europe highlighted by the joint Agrii/Glencore initiative as sole suppliers to Budweiser, the largest selling beer in the world. Glencore also account for a significant proportion of the feed barley market, either to feed manufacturers or exported through its network of port facilities. Agrii and Glencore also have strategic links with all three of the UK’s oat millers, not only trading but identifying the best varieties for their processes.

Agrii’s extensive research in variety selection and husbandry coupled with Glencore’s detailed knowledge of markets, gives growers a selection of low risk, high output crop options. Marketing choices include buy back contracts, pool marketing or movement at harvest with an option to price later.

Growers can also use the Grainman sales and account management system to obtain prices and accept bids, view samples and monitor grain movements and payments.
