We were absolutely delighted with your response to Roald Dahl’s City of the Unexpected in September. As Wales’ biggest ever arts event, this gloriumptious weekend attracted an audience that could fill the Principality Stadium 3 times over! Diolch yn fawr to all those who attended and took part. For more Roald Dahl fun, be sure to visit The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl (pg. 4) at the Centre until mid-January.

As we continue to work towards our ambition of inspiring our nation and impressing the world, we’re thrilled to let you know about an exciting new milestone in the Centre’s history. Tiger Bay, a brand new musical produced by Wales Millennium Centre, will bring early twentieth-century Butetown roaring to life on stage. Filled with rousing music and a cast of unforgettable characters, this epic new musical is the Centre’s latest producing venture and will be sure to send your heart soaring. Turn to page 45 for full details.

As well as this, we’re delighted to welcome some truly exceptional companies and performers back to our stage. This spring, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures makes a welcome return to Cardiff with his latest production, The Red Shoes (pgs. 18 & 19), a magical adaptation of the beloved fairy-tale and Academy Award-winning movie. Christmas 2017 sees the spectacular Miss Saigon (pg. 46) return to the Centre, taking us back to its hugely popular visit in 2005. And in 2018, we’ll also see West End and touring sensation, War Horse (pg. 47) on our stage with its powerfully moving drama, stirring music and astonishing life-sized horses.

Thanks to your support, we can continue to produce and present the very best in art, culture and creativity in Wales. We look forward to welcoming you to the Centre very soon.

Until 14 January 2017Did you know that Roald Dahl used to be a spy? And also a fighter pilot, inventor and historian of chocolate? Laugh until your belly hurts and squirm your way through curious spaces as you embark on a magical and interactive journey through The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl.

Discover the secrets of a writer beloved by gazillions of children and the surprising inspiration for his most famous characters and stories as you step inside this Wondercrump World.

Love’s Poisoned Chalice

This spring, WNO brings you some of the most poignant love stories ever told, through some of the greatest music ever written. The Love’s Poisoned Chalice Season offers three operas, each with their own take on the theme of love, loss, jealousy and heartbreak.

La bohème Puccini

Madam ButterflyPuccini

Le Vin herbéFrank Martin

*These prices include a booking fee of £1.50 per ticket to clearly show the maximum you will pay. Please turn to page 51 for details. **Subject to availability.

La bohème Puccini

28 January, 2, 3, 4, 11 & 15 February 7.15pm From £8.50*

Be transported to bohemian Paris where Rodolfo, a penniless poet, and Mimì, a seamstress, are head over heels in love. But in a world of turmoil and poverty, their hopes and dreams are crushed, and their passionate romance comes to a tragic end.

La bohème is one of opera’s greatest love stories and Annabel Arden’s sensitive and insightful production, first performed by WNO in 2012, was welcomed with open arms by both audiences and critics. The atmospheric set combined with Puccini’s sublime and evocative score takes us on a heart-stopping journey of love and loss.

Sung in Italian with surtitles in English and Welsh

wno.org.uk/boheme

Madam Butterfly Puccini

10, 17 & 18 February 7.15pm & 12 February 4pm From £8.50*

Joachim Herz’s iconic production of Madam Butterfly returns for limited performances. Each scene in this classic staging looks like a sepia photograph through which we glimpse a vanished world.

The story of Butterfly and her American naval officer sees Eastern and Western cultures collide with tragic consequences, through Puccini’s irresistible score featuring the Flower Duet and Humming Chorus, and the beautiful and moving aria Un bel dì.

Sung in Italian with surtitles in English and Welsh

wno.org.uk/butterfly

Le Vin herbé Frank Martin

16 February 7.15pm From £8.50*

Le Vin herbé tells the story of two lovers who drink a spiked potion and fall hopelessly in love. Their affair inevitably leads to tragedy.

Most famously told in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Frank Martin’s intimate opera offers a very different take on the legend in an up-to-date retelling of the story. Directed by the critically acclaimed Polly Graham, the piece was originally conceived for 12 singers, but will be performed by the entire WNO Chorus. It promises to be a thrilling arrangement of this rarely performed opera.

Sung in English with surtitles in English and Welsh

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife”. As the Bennet sisters haplessly search for love in Jane Austen’s ultimate romantic comedy, it is Mr Darcy who unwittingly finds his match.

From the producers of the recent smash-hit To Kill a Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice comes to Cardiff after sell-out performances at Regent’s Park Theatre and features the Olivier award-winning Matthew Kelly (Of Mice and Men) and Felicity Montagu (Alan Partridge, Bridget Jones’s Diary) as Mr and Mrs Bennet.

Celebrating the legacy of Jane Austen as we approach her bicentennial, this is Austen “still dazzling after 200 years” (The Observer).

Ex Machina / Robert Lepage

23 – 25 March 2017This epic solo production tells the story of Philippe, a man coping with the recent loss of his mother, the estrangement of his younger brother André and the mysterious teachings of the universe. Looking to the stars, time and place are secondary to Philippe’s search for meaning in the universe and his place in it. The competition between the Soviets and Americans during the space race, the SETI programme (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) and childhood memories act as touchstones for this one-man show dealing with the fundamental question, “Are we alone?”.

Performed by yves Jacques and punctuated by Laurie Anderson’s otherworldly score, The Far Side of the Moon takes the audience to other worlds on the steady wings of Robert Lepage’s theatrical magic.
