Amelia Bauner’s Education Legacy Lives Onthrough Quincy Service League Grant

Amelia Bauner was passionate about education, serving Quincy Public Schools for 44 years. When making estate plans, she wanted to do something positive for the community. She did just that by establishing the Amelia E. Bauner, Frances A. Hall, and Walter J. Hall Charitable Fund with the Community Foundation to support the Quincy Service League’s charitable causes, including education.

On April 19, the Quincy Service League honored Mrs. Bauner’s legacy by presenting $15,270 to Payson School District, completing a two year technology initiative to provide Chromebooks to all 7-12 grade students. The grant allows the school district to purchase the remaining 83 devices needed to fully integrate technology into the district’s curriculum and prepare students for the future.

“As our communities are growing, technology is always changing,” Quincy Service League Vice President Laura Mays said. “This is where the more progressive schools are going.”

This is the sixth award the Quincy Service League has made with its annual grant from the Amelia E. Bauner, Frances A. Hall, and Walter J. Hall Charitable Fund. Each year, an eight-member committee reviews applications and determines one or two projects to fund. “Our goal is to make sure Amelia is remembered in this area,” says Mays of the grants.

Mrs. Bauner’s generosity will forever impact people through these grants in the community she loved.

New Funds Share Positive Vision for Community

The Community Foundation recently welcomed three new endowment funds. Although each have their own unique charitable goals, all share a common thread of a positive vision for the causes and communities that matter to the donors.

James R. & Katherine H. Williams Fund: Katherine Williams may have been a woman of the world, but her legacy will live on for generations in the region she eventually called home. After being born in Vermont, raised on Army bases across the country, and starting a family in the Philippines, Katherine and her husband James made Quincy their home. Here, she became active in the church, was a charter member of the Quincy Symphony Chorus and was an active sportswoman.

The James R. & Katherine H. Williams Fund, an unrestricted endowment, honors Katherine’s many interests and will support programs providing arts and culture, community betterment, education, health and human services throughout the Community Foundation’s 12-county service area.

Carl and Gladys Koehser Family Fund: In 1946, German-born Carl Koehser married Gladys Crossland from Bowen, Illinois. The couple spent their lives in the Bowen/Augusta area, making careers at State Bank of Bowen – Carl as President and Gladys first as a teller, then working her way up to Vice President.

When their son, David, mentioned the Community Foundation, Gladys was already familiar with the idea of a charitable endowment. She had given annual birthday gifts to her brother’s endowment fund with the Community Foundation, the Dr. & Mrs. Merle Crossland Family Fund. Carl and Gladys liked the idea of giving back to the region they’ve called home.

The Carl & Gladys Koehser Family Fund, a donor advised fund, will serve as a legacy honoring the region where the Koehser family planted its roots and grew a successful life.

Friends of Unit 4 Fund: A designated endowment fund has been established by and for Friends of Unit 4, a not-for-profit organization that supports Community Unit School District #4.

Friends of Unit 4 was established to help “bridge the gap” of school district needs that the Unit 4 Foundation or sports boosters do not cover. This includes program support for FFA and band, as well as other activities, school needs and opportunities.

An endowment, Friends of Unit 4 will benefit from this permanent annual source of financial support. Each year, a portion of the fund growth will be distributed and a portion will be retained for continued growth.

Fund Spotlight: Harry J. & Bernice M. Wissman Heidbreder FundHarry and Bernice Wissman Heidbreder spent their entire lives in Quincy and were wholeheartedly involved in their community. Bernice loved to play bridge and the couple regularly attended YMCA-sponsored dances with the rest of the “Saturday Nighters.” They were active in Meals on Wheels, their neighborhood, and their church.

“Because of their love of Quincy and their pride in their long history in Quincy, we wanted their name and energy to live on,” said their son, Robert, of he and his sister Suzi’s decision to honor their parents by establishing the Harry J. & Bernice M. Wissman Heidbreder Fund.

As an unrestricted endowment, the grants can be used where they are needed most in the region for generations to come.
