W ell, the year is rolling along and it’s hard to believe that summer is almost upon us. Even though summer is one of our industry’s busiest seasons and it may sometimes be

difficult to balance work, life and MCA participation, it seems to me that the best way to prepare for the future is to get involved.

At MCA of Chicago, we’ve begun to look at what we do, how it follows our core values and how it can lead us to a long-range strategy. The Board is currently in the process of confirming these values and investigating the means to reach our long-term goals. We came out of 2016 with a concrete set of incredible ideas, which we’ve molded into an in-depth strategic plan for our association.

The one thread that ties all of these ideas and goals together is the need for increased, enthusiastic involvement from our fellow MCA members.

Over the last year that I’ve been MCA of Chicago president, I’ve been proud to see the renewed energy and increased member involvement in ways that we haven’t seen before.

The Women of MCA Luncheon was a great success (so I’ve been told—it was hinted that maybe I should skip this meeting!), reaching an important part of our growing membership. The CEO Power Hour brought many new attendees that I’ve not seen yet at our events, and I’m sure attendance will be even greater next year. New courses, including the Essentials of Project Management and two new upcoming certificate programs, are aimed at helping to improve the skills and careers of our members. Also, our Membership Meetings have been reformatted to increase excitement and attendance. Each one of these small changes reflects my own desire and that of the MCA Board of Directors to make your membership more worthwhile.

As you may have noticed, this issue of Pipeline News looks a little bit different than past editions. One aspect of our new MCA strategy is improving communication and dialogue with our members. We hope that you find value in this new format as a way to highlight your company’s successes, to get you caught up on the information and events you would most like to see, and to help you to be aware of the many benefits you can receive through your membership in the MCA of Chicago.

On a more personal level, I’ve seen firsthand what a group of thoughtful, inspired and involved people can do. Here at MCA of Chicago, we’re doing all we can to make your membership the most it can be. Member participation is key to achieving this goal, and I hope that many of you have decided to get more involved and spend more time with our organization.

I can’t wait to see what the next year has to bring, and I’m honored to be your president as we move forward together. n

Michael McCombie

Take the time to create your strategy, and

then align your efforts to achieve

your goals.  And as always, we are excited that our members make

MCA a part of their strategies.

During this daylong program at the UA Local 597 Pipefitter Training Facility in Mokena, they’ll learn about mechanical equipment and processes, just like pipe fitter apprentices do. Engineers, estimators, project managers and those in other roles will better understand the mechanical contracting business after attending this specially planned day at the school. In the fall, the course will focus on service, while the spring session will concentrate on the building trades. Keep an eye on our mca.org/calendar to join us for this popular opportunity in the school year ahead. n

The First Year in Review

On January 28, 2016, MCA of Chicago held the kickoff meeting of its brand-new Emerging Leaders Group. Back then, no one knew what to expect, though the

vision was simple: bring together MCA of Chicago members and selected Trusted Industry Partners 45 or under who wish to play a key role in shaping the way our industry will transform.

Led by a Steering Committee comprised of four young leaders from member companies and one leader from a Trusted Industry Partner, the Emerging Leaders Group began holding a variety of events to engage its unique demographic. The group has a hosted speed networking event, chartered a yacht for a cruise of Lake Michigan, discussed the challenges of being a young leader, partnered with BuiltWorlds to highlight the latest in technology and even refined palates with a lesson on using wine as a business tool. And on April 20, the group hosted a mini Career Insight event at Revolution Brewing in Chicago. Attendees were treated to a private tour of the brewery before gathering to discuss how

they got started in their career, the challenges they faced and the successes they have achieved. Thanks to everyone who came and shared their stories!

The group has also been doing some work to encourage its constituents to participate in traditional MCA activities. As it grows, the group will continue to offer exclusive events, facilitate connections with the MCA membership and, most importantly, help people better understand the industry and offer ideas to improve it.

With the Emerging Leaders Group’s one-year anniversary months in the past, MCA of Chicago would like to thank everyone who has volunteered, attended events or shown their support. What the future holds for the group is unknown, but the Emerging Leaders are excited to move forward together! n

Are you 45 or under?Get involved in the Emerging Leaders Group! Suggest future event speakers, venues and formats, or add your name to our email list here: mca.org/emerging-leaders.

Young leaders in today’s workforce are confronted by a unique set of challenges. These challenges were the focus of MCA of Chicago’s Emerging Leaders

Town Hall, held on February 10 in Addison, and moderated by Sarah Sladek of XYZ University. After an overview of the generations, she led the audience through a series of mini discussions focused on millennial interests. Some of the questions posed and answered by the group were:

• What’s the best way to motivate us so we want to work to our full potential?

• How can we best manage those who are older than us?

• How do we gain the trust and respect of those in older generations to earn credibility?

• How can we best communicate our insights and thoughts to get our point across effectively? n

Couldn’t make it to the Town Hall? That doesn’t mean you missed it!Visit mca.org/emerging-leaders to watch the Emerging Leaders Town Hall video.

Mark your calendar! Sarah Sladek of XYZ University will be back to share her thoughts on generational differences and solutions in our workforce at the Membership Meeting on September 19 at Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse in Rosemont.

Looking into the Future at Technology Day 2017

“What’s new in our industry?” Answers to that question could be found at the seventh MCA Technology Day. Jointly presented by MCA of

Chicago, Local Union 597and BuiltWorlds, Tech Day was held on April 7 at Local 597’s Training Center in Mokena. More than 150 people attended the full-day event, which included seminars by industry experts and an expo.

To help members keep pace with emerging, cutting-edge trends, Tech Day showcases the latest developments and examines their effects. “The goal is to help our industry embrace technology in productive ways,” said MCA of Chicago Executive Vice President Jill McCall in her opening remarks, “and sometimes even provide them with competitive advantage.” Highlights of this year’s Tech Day included:

Is It Safe? This was the question pondered by Nick Espinosa, CIO and chief security fanatic of BSSI2, a South Barrington-based company dedicated to providing state-of-the-art IT support, service and products—including cybersecurity. Nick didn’t exactly instill confidence. Part of his job is to break into his clients’ networks to find their vulnerabilities. As he explained, “On average, it takes me 224 days to break into a network, but it takes my clients’ existing IT support 146 days to discover it, and a hacker can do a lot of damage in that time.” Nick also provided tips for safeguarding a system, though, including 2FA, two-factor authentication.

Virtual Reality, Real ReturnsKyle Hudson examined the future of virtual reality applications in construction. He’s a project manager at VIATechnik, a company founded in Chicago and with offices in San Francisco, Sydney and Manila, providing virtual reality, construction design, BIM services and CAD. Kyle looked beyond the flash of virtual reality to explain how its benefits can be extended to field crews, facility managers and owners, increasing ROI in the process.

You’re Still Using Paper? The morning’s last seminar looked at the future of paper in our industry, which, as Lauren Masser, pointed out, isn’t very bright. She’s marketing manager for the Quality and Safety product of Procore Technologies, a provider of cloud-based applications for construction, based in Carpinteria, California. Among the advantages of going paperless she listed were increased efficiency and accountability, real-time data accessibility and minimized costs due to delays.

Taking Technology to SchoolUltimately, technology has to interact with people, often through training first. That was the topic of the afternoon session, a panel and audience-participation discussion. It was moderated by Dan Bulley, MCA of Chicago’s Senior Vice President; with Brian Helm, President and CEO of the Helm Group; Chris Schiro, Controls Specialist, Southwest Town Mechanical; and Mike Zivanovic, instructor at the Local 597 Training Facility sitting on the panel. Among the questions posed making for lively discussion were: How can training keep up with the rapid pace of technology? Is technology stressed too much in training? Should training instead focus on basic problem solving?

Techno ExpoBetween the sessions, 19 exhibitors met with the attendees face-to-face, demonstrating the latest developments in high-tech products like software and also low-tech products like tools that more and more incorporate developing technologies. The Expo was well attended by pre-apprentices attending the service program.

Attendees who stuck around till the end of the day were eligible for raffle prizes, from gift cards to an iPad. So if you missed Tech Day this year, keep an eye on the MCA Calendar so you don’t miss Technology Day 2018. n

MCAA ConventionSan Diego Recap

Our members had a blast in MCA of Chicago’s hospitality suite, which was open all week to provide a hub for our members to relax, catch

up with friends and colleagues, and have some fun while they were in San Diego! On Monday, industry visionaries gathered there to discuss the future of our industry and opportunities to succeed. On Tuesday, our Student Chapters (including MSOE, who took second place in the Student Chapter Competition) joined us in the suite before MCA’s boat cruise of San Diego Harbor aboard the California Princess. Wednesday honored MCA of Chicago President Mike McCombie for his many contributions to the association. A big shout-out also went out to Brian Helm for being selected as a new MCAA Officer and Charlie Usher for completing his MCAA Board service. This year might be tough to top, but we’ll try! Join us at the 2018 MCAA Annual Convention in San Antonio March 25-29.n

By Dan Bulley, MCA Senior Vice President

Safety in TransitionOne of the big things in people’s minds right now is how the change in the White House will affect worksite safety. Looking back at both the Clinton-to-Bush and Bush-to-Obama transitions, I would cautiously say that there is typically a gradual but strong change. It doesn’t happen right away, though. Probably we’ll eventually see a shift from a compliance-based to an assistance-based OSHA. But I think it’s really a moot point.

Safety training, equipment and practices will continue to evolve and hopefully will continue to get better results no matter how OHSA’s attention to these matters are monitored. Contractors may eventually enjoy less paperwork, but we all still have a responsibility for safe jobsites. Unionized contractors have always upheld that responsibility, and we’ll continue to do so no matter what.

There’s an App for ThatOne newer safety practice is the concept of wellness: If a worker is healthier, that will translate to a safer jobsite for all. MCA of Chicago is looking to offer members the Virgin Pulse, an app-based wellness system. But it’s not just an app; it also provides access to an almost unlimited amount of health and wellness resources and professionals. You can hook it up to just about any device, like a Fitbit or an Apple Watch, in order to measure your activity, even set all types of goals for yourself. You can also get exercise, nutritional and other types of professional advice. Contractors using it have seen some amazing results in their employees, who feel better and have more energy. This is why we’re now trying to get other contractors involved. You can sign up on your own, but because of minimums not all contractors are big enough to join. For that reason, MCA of Chicago is investigating to see if we could aggregate our membership. We just need enough contractors to join to represent 1,000 employees. Please contact Dan Bulley at [email protected] if you’re interested.

A Combined Safety EffortAnother thing we’re doing is working more closely with Local 597 on safety. Not only does the union give ten-hour OSHA training to apprentices, but it also incorporates

safety training into just about all of their classes. Local 597 is currently examining how much they do that isn’t safety-dedicated but integrated into their regular classes, so we can see if we’re doing everything we can about safety training. Our joint training school is bigger than many Illinois school districts, and safety is just as important at the school as it is on the jobsite. One of the dedicated training classes is rigging and crane signal classes. Signing up for classes at www.pftf597.org is easy—just click on the training tab.

Silica Regulation: Like Sand Through an HourglassA new regulation taking effect regards Silica, which was addressed directly at the December 16 training class. The instructors demonstrated some new tools that help trap silica dust, but there are problems with them. They’re heavy, generating concerns about compliance with the regulation, which takes effect September 23, 2017. If no one from your company attended the December session or if you need help with your compliance plan, please contact Dan Bulley at [email protected] as soon as possible, so you can be prepared when this new regulation kicks in.

Safety Should be on Your ListMCA of Chicago has identified a safety representative from each member company. These reps have been tasked with getting notes from all meetings of the Safety Committee, and will be invited to all safety training. If your company’s safety rep isn’t getting these communications or if you’re not certain that your representative is correct, please contact Kay Gray at [email protected]. Special thanks to all those responsible for safety at their companies and who work hard to keep their employees safe! n

ALL SAFETY, ALL THE TIME

Unionized contractors have always upheld that responsibility, and we’ll continue to do so no matter what.
