AID has recently launched a capital campaign to provide For All Their Tomorrows – from housing, employment and community integration to health promotion, recovery services and crisis prevention. Decreasing resources have recently become compounded by increasing needs.

Over 1,500 people in the Fox Valley are currently on a waiting list for help, yet very few individuals from the waiting list get help each year. The list will continue to grow as demand exceeds resources and more will require help when aging parents can no longer be caretakers.

The need for community based mental health and developmental disability services continues to grow. Over the next 15 years, half of the 16,000 students in special education will graduate and seek adult services. We are fortunate to have the compassionate programs and services of AID in the Fox Valley area for those who were born with physical, developmental, intellectual or mental health challenges.

Letter from AID President...We are excited to announce our first ever Capital Campaign! We aim to raise $2.5 million for mortgage retirement to avail more funding for direct services. Our Campaign materials were completed and printed in February, at which point we began approaching our Leadership Team regarding individual campaign pledges. Our leaders have been very generous for which we are most grateful! A big thank you to them also for assisting us in approaching many potential new donors!

In March we launched our employee campaign with staff luncheons and generated much excitement. Many staff volunteered to be Campaign Ambassadors, approaching their co-workers to consider a campaign gift or pledge. The generosity of our staff is truly amazing. We plan to kick off our family campaign in May, asking staff and families to work with us as Campaign Ambassadors, approaching other families to consider a campaign gift or pledge.

June will mark the end of the silent phase of the AID Capital Campaign and we will be ready to launch the “public phase.” We are planning a VIP Campaign kick-off event in conjunction with the AID Annual Meeting at Eaglebrook Country Club in Geneva on May 18th. Please save the date! This will be an exciting and fun event you won’t want to miss!

I am VERY pleased to report that we have already secured gifts and pledges totaling $1.34 million! Further, by the kick-off date, we will have reached ½ of our mortgage retirement goal! Truly, we could not have achieved these milestones without the dedication, commitment and generosity of our campaign Leadership Team, staff, families and many friends. Special thanks are in order for the Campaign Co-Chairs who are taking a lead role in moving the Campaign forward: Toni and Bob Vaughan, Chuck and Sheri Miles, and Senator Steve and Betty Rauschenberger.

We hope to see you at the Campaign kickoff at the AID Annual meeting on May 18, at 5:30 pm at Eaglebrook Country Club in Geneva. We will be recognizing our many friends, staff and clients who make AID a stellar non-profit agency serving the Fox Valley community. Please RSVP to Wendy Bialek at 847.931.2294 by Wednesday, May 4th.

AID Yorkville Clients Help Craft Sleeping Mats for Homeless

Ever think about the wastefulness of a plastic bag? “New Life for Old Bags” (NLOB), a collaboration of individuals of all ages and abilities, turn those plastic bags into sleeping mats for the homeless. Clients at the AID Yorkville location have volunteered their time and talent to help make this project a reality.

Each third Saturday of the month, volunteers meet at the Plano library to flatten, fold and cut plastic bags into strips which are then looped together and rolled into “plarn” (plastic yarn) balls. These “plarn” balls are used just like yarn by crocheters to make mats for individuals who are homeless. Many of the crocheters prefer only to crochet, so AID clients help expedite the process by creating the “plarn”. Plastic bags can be donated at the Plano Library. For more information, contact Ceil Carey at [email protected].

Association for Individual Development begins Behavioral Health Services in DeKalb, IL

AID Mental Health services began on February 22, 2016 in DeKalb, IL with 25 individuals currently enrolled. By June 30, 2016 AID will provide supported living services to 30 adults with behavioral and mental health challenges, employing 6 full time Mental Health Professionals (MHPs).

AID supported living services are designed to help individuals with a diagnosed mental illness achieve independence and maintain psychiatric stability. AID MHPs will visit clients in their home/apartment based on mutually developed treatment goals, about 2-3 times each week.

MHPs will assist clients with managing various issues of concern including symptom management, psychiatric crises, assistance in obtaining and organizing medications for ease of use, budgeting and finances, socialization and community integration, education and training, nutrition and wellness, increasing independence in activities of daily living such as apartment maintenance, hygiene, grocery shopping and linkage to natural community supports.

“Since AID will be on-site, employees will be able to provide resource referral and linkage services to other residents,” said AID President, Lynn O’Shea, “AID proposes to provide these services to approximately 180 DeKalb residents each year.”

AID Receives Generous Grant from Kane County Riverboat

AID is very grateful for our partnership with the Kane County Riverboat. This $20,000 will be used to purchase a new passenger van for our Jan-AID employment program. This program provides janitorial services for private, commercial buildings and AID facilities.

Jan-AID offers job training and community employment for individuals with physical, developmental, intellectual and mental health challenges.

IHC Construction Employees Participate in United Way “Day of Caring”

Elgin area clients enjoyed a Halloween-themed party with a costume contest, candy filled tick-or-treat bags and delicious picnic foods.

The United Way “Day of Caring” promotes volunteer work around the United States. AID would like to thank IHC for its continued support. AID clients look forward to this exciting event each year.

Members of the Elgin Police Department Visit AID

On Tuesday, February 23, members of the Elgin Police Department (EPD) met with AID clients to discuss the important role of policemen and women in the community. Clients asked important questions and discussed situations in which to dial 9-1-1.

AID would like to thank the EPD for holding this important seminar.

AID Participates in “Giving Tuesday”

In 2012, a New York non-profit created “Giving Tuesday” to bolster communities and spur online giving following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. To help leverage social media and create a statewide giving movement in Illinois, #ILGIVE was created for the first Tuesday in December.

In 2015, AID participated for the first time in this statewide giving campaign and raised over $19,000. The Grand Victoria Foundation provided a 1:1 match for all individual contributions received electronically up to a maximum of $5,000. AID is grateful to the Grand Victoria Foundation and all AID donors for our successful first year of “Giving Tuesday”!

“ Raising the Barn ”

AID hosted a refreshed, updated and exciting benefit auction in 2015. The event was a sold out success held at the scenic and beautifully renovated “Fisherman’s Inn” in Elburn.

Hundreds of great items were available during the live and silent auctions, from sports tickets to wonderful vacations. New interactive-fundraising games, “Heads Up” and “The Dash” were added to the festivities and kept the audience buzzing with excitement.

The most notable moment of the evening came when Ryan P. spoke to the audience about his trials and triumphs as an AID Thompson Center worker and Home-Based residential client.
