The Fear of IslamAn Introduction to Islamophobia in the WestTodd H. Green

ebook 978-1-4514-6990-5

The scope Green investigates the context of Western views of Islam and offers an introduction to the historical roots and contemporary forms of anxiety regarding Islam within the Western world. Tracing the medieval legacy of religious polemics and violence, Green orients the reader to the complex history and issues in Western relations to Islam, from early and late modern colonial enterprises and theories of “Orientalism,” to the production of religious discourses of otherness and the clash of civilizations that proliferated in the era of 9/11 and the war on terror. Includes analysis of interviews from figures such as Tariq Ramadan, Ingrid Mattson, Eboo Patel, John Esposito, Keith Ellison, and others.

What scholars are saying“Todd Green has written a compelling and important book. The future of the West rises and falls on its ability to welcome the contributions of its most diverse elements. Thus, Islamophobia doesn’t just hurt Muslims, it weakens Western civilization. Professor Green’s book helps us understand the problem and generate creative solutions.”

—Eboo PatelPatel is a member of President Barack Obama’s inaugural Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships and the founder and president of Interfaith Youth Core.

“This is an outstanding presentation of the history and current state of Islamophobia. Todd Green draws upon reliable studies supplemented by original research to demonstrate how perceptions of Muslims are shaped and distorted, leading to prejudice and fear. Highly recommended for reporters, teachers, and policy makers.”

The scopeIn this important new project, Charles Tieszen provides a collection of primary theological sources devoted to the formational period of Christian-Muslim relations. It provides brief introductions to authors and their texts along with representative selections in English translation. The collection is arranged according to the key theological themes that emerge as Christians and Muslims encounter one another in this era.

The result is a resource that offers students a far better grasp of the texts early Christians and Muslims wrote about each other and a better understanding of the important theological themes that are pertinent to Christian-Muslim dialogue today.

Renowned international scholars seek to describe Paul and his work from “within Judaism,” rather than on the assumption, still current after thirty years of the “New Perspective,” that in practice Paul left behind aspects of Jewish living after his discovery of Jesus as Christ (Messiah). The contributors take different methodological points of departure: historical, ideological-critical, gender-critical, and empire-critical, and examine issues of terminology and of interfaith relations. Surprising common ground among the contributors presents a coherent alternative to the “New Perspective.”

V. George Shillington seeks to understand both James and Paul as Jews, without prejudice, operating under the banner of Jesus crucified and risen, and engaged in different but complementary missions. Examining what can be reconstructed of both men and their respective missions from Acts read critically and other epistolary and legendary sources, Shillington concludes that the tension between those missions indicates a conflict between different politics of identity, a conflict best understood by granting each figure the integrity of his own very Jewish vision––and recognizing the importance of how much they held in common.

V. George Shillington is professor emeritus at Canadian Mennonite University, Winnipeg.

The Disciples’ PrayerThe Prayer Jesus Taught in Its Historical SettingJeffrey B. Gibson

Gibson disputes the view that Jesus’ prayer was derived from Jewish synagogal prayers. He shows that the genre of the prayer is petitionary and understanding its intent requires understanding Jesus’ purpose in calling disciples as witnesses against “this generation.” Jesus, he says, did not mean to teach a unique understanding of God; the prayer had its roots in first-century Jewish movements of protest. In context, Gibson shows that the prayer was meant to protect disciples from the temptations of their age and to strengthen their countercultural testimony. Gibson’s conclusions offer new insights into the historical Jesus and the movement he sought to establish.

What scholars are saying “Lundbom places the teachings of the Sermon into the broad context of the Bible, ancient Jewish teachings, and the history of interpretation for the sake of clarifying the sometimes perplexing, always challenging, pronouncements of the Sermon. Moreover, he draws upon hymns, devotional literature, and pastoral experience to illustrate how the teachings of the Sermon can be applied to life in the present. The book is an excellent resource for the preacher, teacher, and any student of the Bible who is looking for solid scholarship and insightful application.”

What scholars are saying “Michael Kok has written a remarkable book. His argument that the Gospel of Mark was hardly read in the second century, except perhaps by a fringe group in the developing coalition of Christian groups, is utterly convincing. Kok’s argument that the gospel received a place in the emerging Christian canon not because of its intrinsic merit, but because it was confiscated for the canon as a way of further marginalizing a group that treasured it, is provocative and persuasive. Kok’s scholarship is impeccable, and he makes his novel argument with great clarity. New Testament scholars and historians of early Christianity, take note!”

My Flesh Is Meat IndeedA Nonsacramental Reading of John 6:51–58Meredith J. C. Warren

Warren argues that in fact, the “bread of life” discourse in John 6:51c-58 does not bear any Eucharistic overtones. Rather, John plays on shared cultural expectations in the ancient Mediterranean world about the nature of heroic sacrifice and the accompanying sacrificial meal, which established the identification of a hero with a deity. Warren traces a literary trope in which a hero or heroine’s antagonistic relationship with a deity is resolved through the sacrifice of the hero. She argues that seen against this milieu, Jesus’ insistence that his flesh be eaten serves to demonstrate his identity and confirms the Christology of the rest of the Gospel.

Meredith J. C. Warren is an FRQSC postdoctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa. She completed her doctorate at McGill University under the direction of Ellen Aitken.

What scholars are saying “How ‘the divine’—whether understood as a single deity, multiple deities, transcendent spirit, or some impersonal providential force—functions within Greek and Roman, along with Biblical and Jewish, historiography is a question of long-standing scholarly interest. . . . In this comprehensive, methodical, nuanced investigation, Shauf compiles the relevant texts, examines them critically, and synthesizes his findings in masterly fashion. A ‘must-read’ for students of Luke–Acts, for scholars who deal with ancient historiography in its multiple forms, and for all who struggle to understand the relationship between history and theology.”

Kotrosits challenges the contemporary notion of “early Christian literature,” showing that a number of texts usually so described—New Testament writings including Hebrews, Acts, the Gospel of John, Colossians, and 1 Peter, as well as the letters of Ignatius, the Gospel of Truth, and the Secret Revelation of John—are “not particularly interested” in a distinctive Christian identity or self-definition. Rather, by appealing to the categories of trauma studies and diaspora theory and giving careful attention to the dynamics within each of these texts, she shows that this sample of writings offers complex reckonings with chaotic diasporic conditions and the transgenerational trauma of colonial violence.

Maia Kotrosits is assistant professor of religion at Denison University.

The Origin of Evil SpiritsThe Reception of Genesis 6:1–4 in Early Jewish Literature, Revised EditionArchie T. Wright

AprilLevel: upper level undergraduate and seminary 978-1-4514-9032-9 pb 280pp $44 £30.99 Rights: CUSA English, print paperback only

Wright traces the development of the concept of evil spirits from the Hebrew Bible through postbiblical Jewish literature. He is concerned with the reception history of Genesis 6:1–4 (the source of the “Watchers” traditions) in early Enochic and Philonic Judaism during the Second Temple period and suggests that the nonspecificity inherent in the biblical text of Genesis 6:1–4 opened the basis for the later emergence of an etiology of evil spirits as Jewish authors engaged with the text. As a result, Genesis 6:1–4 played an important part in the development of demonology in Second Temple Judaism.

Archie T. Wright is an associate professor of biblical studies at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

A student handbook designed with the beginning student in mind, this volume introduces the reader to the books that did not make it into the Bible or the Apocrypha but that remained popular among Jews and early Christians for centuries. These writings take various forms, such as novels, poems, apocalypses, the fictional deathbed speeches of biblical characters, and even attempts to rewrite well-known parts of Scripture. The book draws out the main religious ideas of these writings and links them to both their original historical setting and to issues of concern today.

Susan Docherty is reader in biblical studies and head of theology at Newman University, Birmingham, UK.

Sneed redefines the wisdom literature as a loosely cohering collection of books aimed at educating scribal apprentices in moral instruction and the art of living. He presents archaeological and literary data illustrating scribal culture and pedagogy in the ancient Near East and argues that Israel’s wisdom literature was meant to complement, not to compete with, other modes of literature in the Hebrew Bible. The result is a surprising new picture of the authors and tradents of the wisdom materials alongside the rich mixture of other traditions in ancient Israel, a presentation carried out with regard to Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, Wisdom, and the wisdom writings in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Features include informational sidebars, diagrams, and maps locating archaeological discoveries.

Yoder examines the political culture in the book of Judges as he considers the variety of strategies the men and women of valor used to gain and consolidate their power, including the use of violence, the redistribution of patronage, and the control of the labor and reproductive capacity of subordinates. They relied heavily, he says, on strategies that did not deplete their wealth or require the constant exercise of force: mobilizing and dispensing indigenous knowledge, cultivating a reputation for reliability and honor, and positioning themselves as skillful mediators between the realms of earth and heaven, using their association with YHWH to advance their political, economic, or military agenda.

John C. Yoder, recently retired, taught history and political science and directed the Peace Studies Program at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington.

Joseph shows that the Deuteronomist in the days of the Josianic Reform constructed David as a model of adherence to the covenant, and Jeroboam, conversely, as the ideal opposite of David. The redactor further characterized other kings along one or the other of these two models.

What scholars are saying“Alison Joseph has produced a learned, imaginative, and thought-provoking work. . . . Her insights into the intricacies and subtleties of the historiographic craft are a very welcome contribution to our understanding of how Israelite scribes conceived of the past and sought to represent it in literary form.”

In this landmark set, an extensive collection of writings from Johannes Bugenhagen, Luther’s pastor, friend, and colleague in reform, are presented for the first time in English. The vast majority of these works have been available in their original, sixteenth-century editions only. Called by some the Second Apostle to the North, Johannes Bugenhagen (1485–1558) was a pivotal figure in the organization of the Lutheran movement in northern Germany and in parts of Scandinavia. Hendel has organized this extensive collection thematically—introducing us to Bugenhagen the man, the theologian, the exegete, the pastor, the church organizer, and the social reformer.

A Question of ConsensusThe Doctrine of Assurance after the Westminster ConfessionJonathan Master

Since its completion in 1646, the Westminster Confession’s position on assurance has been a subject of controversy. In this exciting new work, Jonathan Master considers the Westminster Confession’s statements on assurance as a position of consensus among a diversity of viewpoints and traces how from this one position, the idea was expanded and modified—even by the document’s own authors!—just years after its reception, in very distinct ways. Each of these expansions on what was intended to be a consensus document forms the basis for later traditions regarding assurance within the Reformed and Evangelical traditions.

Jonathan Master is professor of theology and dean of the School of Divinity at Cairn University in Langhorne, Pennsylvania.

The Deutsche Christen, or “German Christians,” a movement within German Protestantism, integrated Nazi ideology, nationalism, and Christian faith. Marrying religious anti-Judaism to the Nazis’ racial anti-Semitism, they aimed to remove everything Jewish from Christianity.

For the first time in English, Mary M. Solberg presents many of the formative documents of the Deutsche Christen. Her introduction sets the historical context. Includes responses critical of the German Christians by Karl Barth and Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Mary M. Solberg is associate professor of religion at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.

Here, she explores the longest period of the liturgical year, ordinary time—thirty-three weeks where no great dramas occur. We need to learn how to live ordinary life in an extraordinary way, she says, as she examines thirty-three biblical texts reflecting on how God breaks into everyday life.

“This first volume of Professor Sonderegger’s Systematic Theology presents one of the most distinguished treatments of the Christian doctrine of God in recent decades. It is a reflective expansion of a single, utterly arresting thought that oneness is the fundamental divine perfection by which all talk of the attributes of God is to be governed. . . . But, above all, it offers a deeply impressive commendation of the first and greatest matter of Christian faith. The study unites delicacy of judgment with purposiveness and originality of mind, and communicates that appetite for divine things without which wholesome theological work is not possible. This is theology of enduring intellectual and spiritual substance.”

Scott reinvigorates stalled debates in philosophy and theology through a detailed reassessment of the problem of evil and the task of theodicy and through a careful analysis of the major models and motifs in theodicy. Exploring the strengths and weaknesses of classic and contemporary perspectives on the problem of evil, he invites readers to assess the cogency and relevance of each thus introducing the plurality of options available to treat the problem of evil and the provisional and tentative nature of theodicy, which searches not for final, definitive solutions but for viable ways to move the conversation forward.

Can faith as trusting God make a difference? Absolutely, says Peters, by relieving our anxiety over self-justification and the need to scapegoat others. Sin Boldly! provides an experiential analysis of the contrast between self-justification and justification by God. Peters poses the question: how can the gospel of grace provide transformation for both fragile and broken souls? He then proposes the following answer: trusting in the God of grace relieves anxiety and provides a divine vocation that transcends our moral universe with the promise of forgiveness, renewal, and resurrection. Includes a Foreword from Martin E. Marty.

Rudolf Bultmann’s controversial program of demythologizing has been the subject of constant debate since it was first announced in 1941. It is widely held that this program indicates Bultmann’s departure from the dialectical theology he once shared with Karl Barth. In the 1950s, Barth thus referred to their relationship as that of a whale and an elephant: incapable of meaningful communication. This study proposes a contrary reading of demythologizing as the hermeneutical fulfillment of dialectical theology on the basis of a reinterpretation of Barth’s theological project. Includes these Appendices: The Christian Meaning of Faith, Love, Hope (1925), Leitsätze of Rudolf Bultmann (1925), and more.

Between Apocalypse and Eschaton examines the systematic theology of Henri de Lubac, SJ, one of the most significant Catholic theologians of the twentieth century. While much of the recent work on de Lubac centers on the controversies surrounding his theology of the supernatural, Flipper here argues that eschatology is the key to de Lubac’s theological project and critical to understanding the nouvelle théologie, the group of theologians with whom de Lubac was associated. After World War II, de Lubac’s writings increasingly focused on the theology of history and eschatology. The present work returns focus to this often neglected aspect of de Lubac’s work.

Vatican II, says Faggioli, is the most important event in church history after the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, and it is the key to understanding Catholicism and its inner tensions today. The Second Vatican Council ended in December 1965, but Vatican II is still happening in the global church. Catholicism has always had a universal claim, but the globalization of Catholicism as a truly “world church” became part of Catholic theology only thanks to that gathering of bishops, theologians, lay observers, ecumenical representatives, and journalists.

What scholars are saying “In a book that is brief and seeker-friendly, Father Nichols offers a clear and succinct introduction to the shape of Marian doctrine. Drawing from sacred Scripture, the early Fathers, the church’s living tradition, and liturgy, Nichols summarizes the theological development of the Marian dogmas in a way that is Christocentric and ecumenical. This Rose is a marvel of economy, tracing the divine logic of love and fittingness, demonstrating that Mary is the one who exemplifies the perfection of Christ’s redeeming work. The Church in Act explores the dynamics of ecclesial and liturgical theology, examining the body of Christ in action. Johnson, one of the premier liturgical specialists in the field, offers a robust account of the liturgical, sacramental, and spiritual practices of the church for scholars, students, pastors, and others who seek to minister in an ecumenical context with increased understanding and insight. The topics under consideration range from baptismal spirituality to Eucharistic concerns, including real presence, pneumatology, and reservation; discussions on what constitutes liturgical normativity, the diverse hermeneutical approaches to the Revised Common Lectionary, the place of Mary in ecumenical dialogue, and more.

Maxwell E. Johnson is professor of liturgical studies at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, and a pastor in the ELCA.

What scholars are saying“In 1960, the physicist Eugene Wigner published a famous paper on the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the human understanding of physical reality. This fresh study by a scientist-theologian takes up similar ground, but it is far more philosophical and existential. Nesteruk demonstrates astonishing learning in science, philosophy, and theology in this new approach to an old subject. Unlike most work in science and religion, this book does not take up current physical theories but has a laser focus on human being itself, showing how the eyes of faith give us a deeper understanding into why we would do this kind of science at all. Using the tools of phenomenology and existentialism, he uncovers what is too often hidden: the open, questing being that is human, created in God’s image. I recommend this outstanding study to anyone who seeks to think deeply in new ways about faith and the meaning of our scientific quest.” —Alan G. Padgett, Luther Seminary

A Public GodNatural Theology ReconsideredNeil Ormerod

What scholars are saying “Professor Ormerod’s book is timely, courageous, and bracing in its range of reference. Public discourse on religion has become hesitant and rarefied, just when, under the assaults of quasi-scientific forms of atheism, reference to God in the public domain has become timid and defensive. In the meantime, when the ability to speak of God as foundational to all intelligent, moral, and aesthetic discourse is notably diminished, an ominous superficiality pervades political and moral deliberations.

“When the cultural conversation no longer allows for what matters most, Ormerod calls on us not to leave the public sphere to the idols and demons of our time. Readers will welcome this book and find insight not only on God but also on the conscience, personal and social, needed to combat evil in all of its forms. A Public God, maturing over many years, is definitely worth waiting for: a splendid achievement.”

—Anthony J. Kelly, Australian Catholic University

“An important and welcome contribution to the resurgence of interest in natural theology in recent years. Ormerod makes an excellent case for developing a natural theology that is publicly credible and accountable.”

What scholars are saying “You might think that a book that tackles bullying and racism would be guaranteed to leave the reader despairing. Not this one. In Beyond Apathy, Elisabeth Vasko issues an irresistibly empathetic challenge to the many Americans who benefit from heteropatriarchy and white supremacy—often without intending or even realizing it. Refusing easy answers, she skillfully and courageously reimagines a breathtaking array of Christian symbols, holding out genuine hope that ‘privileged bystanders’ can learn to break through our apathy and act in compassionate solidarity with victims. A must-read.”

What scholars are saying“The author has drawn clear and logical threads connecting various Christian world views to globalization, corruption, and other key developments that may underpin the increasing concern for the environment. In particular, the analysis makes it clear that there is no single Christian ‘position’ on either the environment or the economy itself in terms of cause, effect, or solutions. One big advantage of this book is that each of its seven chapters can be read independently according to the readers’ particular interest which may be the idea of sustainability, ethical decision making, Christian activism on the environment, or policy prescriptions.”

Though the data is complex and explanations are often elusive, her understanding of the growth of tradition in terms of each generation’s struggle with theological questions left unanswered by an earlier generation produces a trajectory that is both exegetically convincing and hermeneutically suggestive.”

Biblical narratives repeatedly depict threshing floors in ancient Israel as sites for mourning rites, divination rituals, cultic processions, and sacrifices. Kings consult prophets there; even the Solomonic temple was built on a threshing floor. Jaime L. Waters shows that these originally agricultural sites were also considered sacred spaces connected to Yahweh and that Israel had a special ritual access to Yahweh in these powerfully symbolic sites. She examines the various personnel active in the use and operation of threshing floors in these sacred functions in order to draw a more complete picture of ancient Israelite social life.

Jaime L. Waters is assistant professor in the department of Catholic studies at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. This volume is based on her dissertation completed

at The Johns Hopkins University under the direction of Theodore J. Lewis.

Stalder asks how Palestinian Christians have read the Old Testament in the period before and under the British Mandate and now, in light of the foundation of the modern State of Israel. He then contemplates how they might read these sacred texts in the future, interacting with proposals by Michael Prior, Charles Miller, and Gershon Nerel. His goal is to outline a possible hermeneutic that does not disregard the concerns of the respective religious communities without writing off the Old Testament prematurely.

Will Stalder is minister of Methlick Parish Church in Scotland. This volume is based on his dissertation completed at the University of Aberdeen, UK, under the direction of

Joachim Schaper, Kings College.

What scholars are saying“This work fills a lacuna in Dead Sea Scrolls scholarship, where a full-scale investigation of the concept and language of ‘repentance’ is still missing. Jason provides a thorough philological and conceptual study, but he is also attentive to the dynamics of religious experience in the Qumran texts. His study of early Jewish views of repentance is also of fundamental relevance for the understanding of the New Testament, especially the message of John the Baptist and of Jesus. . . . ”

Adroitly bringing together the exegete’s skills, the poet’s imagination, and the theologian’s inquisitiveness, she opens up—beautifully, insightfully—how Luke, in confronting the division between Jew and Gentile, uses the cleansing of the leprosy-afflicted body to signal God’s boundary-bursting redefinition of holiness and ever-expansive love for all creation.”

What scholars are saying“This discussion is more than a historical analysis, for it is centered on the method of theōria, which when properly understood and defined, places this method of interpretation right in the heart of the discussion of the New Testament use of the Old Testament and the debate over whether interpreters should use the grammatical-historical method exclusively in its search for meaning or defer more to an allegorical-spiritual rendering of Scripture if they wish to see more intimately the contemporary spiritual meaning of a biblical text for the believer today. I heartily recommend this text.”

A Free Corrector evaluates Colin Gunton’s treatment of Augustine’s legacy on the Trinity and the doctrine of creation. Gunton claimed that Augustine’s work ultimately contributed to a host of problems for the Western tradition. Joshua McNall addresses this in conjunction with Gunton’s argument regarding Augustine’s “afterlife.” In the end, A Free Corrector argues that while Gunton was far too “free” in his correction of Augustine, it is also true that isolated aspects of his Augustinian narrative remain viable.

Joshua McNall is assistant professor in the School of Ministry and Christian Thought at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. This volume is an expansion of his doctoral thesis completed at

This study is an apologetic for the ongoing, constructive theological task in Protestant and Evangelical traditions. It suggests that doctrinal development can be explained as a hermeneutical phenomenon and that insights from hermeneutical philosophy and the philosophy of language can aid theologians in constructing explanatory theses for particular theological problems associated with the facts of doctrinal development, namely, questions related to textual authority, reality depiction, and theological identity. Putman provides a constructive model that forwards a descriptive and normative pattern for reading Scripture and theological tradition together.

Rhyne R. Putman is assistant professor of theology and culture at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana. This volume is based on

Triune Eternality argues that a proper comprehension of Barth’s theological conception of time and eternity is best achieved by understanding three important contexts: the doctrinal, the conceptual, and the developmental. For Barth “time and eternity” are not so much philosophical or scientific concepts but theological terms that point to fundamental realities. This work proceeds from the conviction that in Barth we have a twofold opportunity: to allow earlier answers to speak to our own recent questions and to use our contemporary perspective to gain insight on historic contributions.

Daniel M. Griswold serves as pastor of Trinity Reformed Church in Rochester, New York. This volume is based on his dissertation completed at Southern Methodist University

What scholars are saying“Watkins’s project questions many of our dearly held but often problematic ideas about artistic creativity. Eschewing the model of artist as genius or icon of God, Watkins offers us a ‘sacrificial’ model, christologically through and through, that frees the artist from small, self-absorbed, self-defeating aims for the sake of a larger, more costly but also more deeply enriching vocation. “In this incisive and deeply researched work, Joshua Genig identifies a perennial trouble that has plagued nearly every ecclesial communion, particularly a de-sacramentalizing of the word of God and the liturgical act of preaching. Furthermore, his brilliant use of the annunciation to Mary as the paradigmatic answer to such a trouble is both ingenious and timely, especially in an ecumenical perspective. This work is an important contribution for those engaged in sacramental theology, liturgical theology, Mariology, and the integration of all into an insightful pastoral theology of preaching.”

What scholars are saying“This is the book that we have needed. The explosion of emergent and missional churches is a global phenomenon, and it is exhilarating to watch. But too often these efforts lack serious theological and biblical foundation. This is just what Oden provides. In a dialogue with the thought of Jürgen Moltmann and many of the emergent leaders, he offers a Trinitarian framework for understanding these emerging forms as transformative sites where God’s kingdom purposes are exhibited and extended. Highly recommended.”

Can experiences of God serve to inform and justify our theological beliefs and practices? The central claim in this work is that there is a radical mistake in many contemporary accounts that require grounding a theological story of God’s availability to us in experience in a prior general philosophical theory of perception. Instead, it is argued that the philosophical problem of perception is a pseudoproblem. The study concludes with a new reading of Gregory of Nyssa and his theology of the spiritual senses, which is free from the bewitchment of the problem of perception.

Sameer Yadav is a postdoctoral teaching fellow at the John Wesley Honors College at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. This volume is based on his dissertation
