No space or time to garden? Need a splash of colour? Perhaps the answer is a

hanging basket. Summer baskets filled with cascading flowers add warmth and charm to the smallest space and they are not hard to make, or to maintain.

Now is the time to check out the selection of pots and baskets in the garden centers. Almost anything that will hold soil can become a hanging basket; wire frames in many different sizes and styles, glazed pottery, terra cotta urns, plastic pots, or wooden planters. Keep in mind that heavy pots need strong hangers.

Moss baskets made from wire frames are very popular at present. They are the ultimate hanging basket, and can be planted on the sides and bottom as well as the top so they are visible from every angle. Ask your local garden center for a fact sheet on how to plant a moss basket. It requires more plants and a bit more know-how than a normal basket, but are well worth the effort.

The most important factor when planting any basket is the soil. It should be lightweight, provide water and nutrient retention, plant support, and excellent drainage. This can be found in a high quality peat-based potting soil like Art Knapp planter box mix. Add a balanced 14-14-14 slow release fertilizer before planting to slowly feed throughout the season.

A wide variety of basket stuffer annuals are available in the nurseries right now. Look for plants with the ‘Proven Winner’ tag. They perform better and last longer than others, and many are award winning, innovative plants.

A shade basket including white variegated or blue Hostas, combines well with Proven Winner Fuchsias like Ginger, a dainty, soft salmon pink, Betty, vibrant red and white, or Marcia cherry red and violet. Add some trailing Bacopa or Verbena to complete the effect.

Supertunias are the result of years of breeding work to select for the most

vibrant colours, the earliest flowering, superior growth characteristics and proven performance. Try Sufina Supertunias that cascade from sunny hanging baskets in waterfalls of vibrant colours. Supertunia Doubles are strongly fragrant with large ruffled blooms. Supertunia Minis are an exciting breed breakthrough with a very full growth habit and continuous bloom

Whatever you decide to plant now is the time to start. Protect your creation until May and then hang it out for all to admire. Planting now ensures a more mature and longer lasting basket once spring finally arrives.

To maintain the beauty of your hanging basket all summer, keep it well watered. On hot or windy summer days, this may mean twice a day. As the season wears on, and your basket is at it’s finest, a weekly application of high phosphorous flowering plant food such as Art Knapp water soluble hanging basket fertilizer will help to keep it that way.

Airplants, also known as Tillandsias are the largest genus in the bromeliad family and are a great addition to any home. Native to the forest and mountains of central

and South America air plants are technically epiphytes meaning they grow on another tree, or host object. However, air plants do not use the host to gain nutrients, only as a place to attach. Not needing soil and their ability to attach and grow on many objects makes them a great addition to home and office decor.

While low maintenance, air plants do still require some care. With proper care you will be sure to enjoy your air plants for years and likely even harvest some “pups”.

Light & TemperatureAir plants thrive in bright indirect light. Try keeping your air plant near a window (preferably facing east, west, or south) in a kitchen or bathroom where the moisture in the air will also keep them happy. If you are unable to provide sunlight you can supplement with artificial light as long as they receive adequate amounts and are not kept far away from the light source. Air plants are very tolerant of wide range of temperatures. Most species can withstand near freezing temperatures, although they prefer temperatures in the low to mid 20 degree Celsius range.

Water & FertilizingWatering is critical when keeping air plants indoors, especially in homes and offices with air conditioning and central air as there will not be much humidity in the air. Many people like to mist their air plants, which helps especially when they are kept in dry conditions. Misting should be done in addition to

thorough soaking, and not as the sole source for moisture. Rain or drinking water is best for soaking, if using tap water that has been treated leave water in a bowl over night to allow any chemicals to dissipate. Placing your air plant face down in a bowl of tepid warm water for 20 to 35 minutes should do the trick. If your air plant is looking especially dehydrated (curled in closed leaves) you can leave it in the water for a few hours or overnight. It is important to always gently shake out your air plant after watering and let it completely dry before placing back in its display container. Any water left in between foliage will cause rotting. Fertilize about once every month or two. Air plants have the ability to capture and hold nutrients in their foliage. Use a high quality water-soluble fertilizer that is low in copper, as copper in large amounts is toxic to bromeliads. Fertilizing is not required for survival, but will increase the plants growth and blooms. Remember each plant is different and temperatures, amount of light, and humidity in the air will need to be accounted for when watering.

AirAs the name states, your air plant will need clean air circulation to thrive. While the sky is the limit when it comes to displaying air plants be careful not to place them in completely sealed containers as there will be no circulation. If you are displaying your air plant close to air conditioning or forced air you will need to hydrate more frequently.

DisplayBecause air plants are epiphytic the possibilities for display are almost endless. A few suggestions to try are driftwood, interesting tree branches, broken clay pottery, rocks or stones. They also look beautiful in hanging glass terrariums where you can add your personal touch with different coloured glass, shells, stones, or simply place in the glass for a modern look.
