the spring/summer 2013 season is going to be one of newfound hope, optimism, and global unity. we’ve just survived the disaster that was set to strike in late 2012: the end of the world. as we come out of this unscathed, the world takes the time to restructure itself and re-evaluate what was thought to be known about our place in society.

the economic downturn has without a doubt affected a broad range of people, hitting the fashion industry especially hard. luxury took a backseat as consumers began pinching their pennies, unsure of where the market would be going next. shoppers began practicing thriftier habits: recycling the old and making it new, fresh, and at a low cost. the diy culture that has emerged over the years strongly contributed to this trend, as crafty consumers look to save money and create personalized looks from thrifted and repurposed items. this trend is all about kitschy, arts and crafts fashion.

trend forecast:gilded luxury

spring 2013 brings a sense of renewal and a fresh start. after living through a predicited disaster such as the end of the world, consumers find hope and a sense of security. this rediscovered confidence will bring a renaissance of opulence into fashion, as the idea of luxury items starts to make it’s way back into the buying habits of consumers around the globe.

3

Page 6: Spring 2013 Trend Forecast

s/s 2013gilded luxury

driving this trend currently are the frugal and money conscious habits of consumers during the start of the economic recovery. because the future of the market is shaky, buyers have dismissed luxury and have taken to setting tighter budgets. with the steady rebuilding of the economy and the world surving the foreseen apocolypse, consumers will become more optimistic of the situation and allow luxury back into their spending habits. the opulent, embellished fashion that was laughable during the downturn will make an elegant return.

right now, consumers are saving their money and securing it away due to the unstable condition of the economy. consumers will find appreciation for luxury items once again for their durability and quality.

back cast:bare minimumsclean lines and uncomplicated silhouettes were in this season as the minimalism trend surfaced. this trend is based off the accepted knowledge that less can be more. while enduring economic struggles and complex global issues, consumers took to a minimalistic style. it represents all that is pure, simple, and balanced. this was not only applied to fashion choices but also was used as a model for a wayof life, promoting harmonization and living without excess novelties and frills.

trend forecast:rooted in nature

we return to our roots this season, found in nature’s sustaining embrace. the world has been rocked after living through doomsday, and we are called to re-evaluate our place in the universe. we find true sustinence and life in nature and all it has to offer, which lends it to being a huge inspiration for consumer behaviors this season.

living through disaster calls for a re-evaluation of where we came from and what nourishes us: the earth. this wake up call will bring people back to their roots to regain an appreciation for all that nature gives us. driving this trend is the general desire to rebuild the decaying earth and see a brighter future for generations to come. the “green” movement and eco-friendly design strongly fuel this trend. as more and more consumers become aware of the state of the world, they will look to nature as a source of inspiration.

current consumer behaviors that will help this trend evolve include all of the habits that are instilled when living a “green” life. more and more products are being introduced that are eco-friendly and leave little to no environmental footprints. consumers are becoming more concerned with the environmental crises arising, and will really begin to understand their impact.

rooted in nature key stylesrooted in nature

styles within this trend are characterized by organic shapes and textural interest. all

inspiration is derived by elements in nature: the nubby texture of moss can be seen in the

texture of fabric, the varigated color of tree bark serves as inspiration for a dye technique.

styles are not overly complicated and stay rooted in nature, keeping them pure and simple. colors are muted and silhouettes

are delicate.

with the globes obsession with technology, the digital age is booming. from the latest hi-tech toys to social media on the computer, consumers have fully embraced this culture. apple has made a killing off their sleek and stylish ipads and macbooks, and facebook and twitter rule the world wide web. this trend makes use of digitally composed graphics, futuristic silhouettes, and techy fabrics.

trend forecast:cultural hybrid

the confines between world cultures are constantly being redifined and even eliminated as social media provides a connection to societies far, far away. as cross cultural integration occurs, fashion becomes a welcome melting pot for a wide variety of colorful and diverse cultures. consumers around the globe have access to peer into the different lifestyles around the world, and even will incorporate elements from these areas as they develop into cultural hybrids. 15

Page 18: Spring 2013 Trend Forecast

s/s 2013cultural hybrid

the popularity and widespread use of social media sites like facebook and twitter highly contribute to the development of this trend. as more and more people around the globe tap into these sites, the world grows smaller. it’s become easier than ever to interact with cultures that exist thousands of miles away. as the bounds that contain different societies are crossed, cross cultural pollination occurs.

consumers have always been fascinated with all that is exotic, worldly, and foreign. through using social media sites, they gain access to all parts of the world and begin to identify with other cultures.

16

key stylescultural hybrid

the cultural hybrid trend dips into the prints, fabrics, and styles associated with a slew of

different cultures and societies. it’s about a collaboration of cultural influences, like tribal

patterns on harem pants, or an egyptian style dress with african graphics. prints are an

important aspect of this trend, lending a clear cut picture of the society it was derived from.

because emphasis is placed on the cross cultural mix, styles vary widely from area to area.and are dependent the cultures one is

exposed to.
